Weight: 280 g (9.88 oz) for 20 GB model and 320 g (11.29 oz) for higher capacity models. mattmarek Posted July 30, 2004 Report Share Posted July 30, 2004 do you hook this up to your sled to record video and then for playback? if so, do you need the cradle for an rca in/out? what's the battery life like on a full day shoot? is there a tuner adaptor or anything like that so as to send video to the unit wirelessly??? never heard of the archos, sounds neat. Ruben Sluijter Posted July 30, 2004 Author Report Share Posted July 30, 2004 Well, from what I've heard so far this one uses a cradle for tv recording (which comes standard) and it has an optional video in unit as an accesory that will allow it to have video in without the cradle (i.e. when it's on a sled). If it's anything like the 300 series it will have svideo and a normal video in. Battery life if about 3/4 hours but, as it's only 6v, it should be relatively easy to get power from the sled (depending on the rig you have you may already have 6v out) and power it indefinetly at also has video out so I guess you could send it through that. The disadvantage of the (older) 300 version was the rather low resolution but apparently this one will go a lot higher (it can playback at 704x380 but I don't know if it can record at this res) Also, the attachment for video-in was rather large, hopefully they've made it a bit smaller this time. This technology is still not on the (quality)level of a DV recorder but it does have advantages in price, weight and storage capacity. There are a few others but in this price range the Archos is the best choice. It doesn't have the cable problem that the Archos seems to have, the analog video in is a mini plug. Fred Davis made me a cable for cheap. The spinup time takes some getting used to, but that's just a matter of fitting it into your workflow. I love being able to pull it off my rig and show things to directors. The battery life is about three hours in constant record/standby mode, though Fred says that he can build a cable that will power it off my rig. I bought two because I'm crazy. mattmarek Posted July 31, 2004 Report Share Posted July 31, 2004 paul (or anyone with lyras experience) i was looking at the lyras about 10 mins ago at best buy. seems a lot cheaper than the archos for the 20gig model. how does the resolution compare? anything else you'd care to mention? the best buy actually took it off the shelf due to the 1st unit they had breaking in 1 day. have you had any issues? does it seem flimsy/cheap? how about an external tuner to make it into a clamshell type device...any add on's here? overall happiness? thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What about playback to the directors monitor from the Modulus on the sled? Does anyone have info on this? I like the size and storage capacity features. Very interested in trying these out. PaulSommers Posted July 31, 2004 Report Share Posted July 31, 2004 The LYRA has on plug for input and one for output. I'm sure that a cable could be made very easily. The power input is 5V. It uses MPEG4 compression, so the resolution is not the best out there, but it is certainly better than my old EVO-220, and it looks really slick. The size is great. guillermo nespolo Posted July 31, 2004 Report Share Posted July 31, 2004 i have a buy a try a old model of archos....the 100 serie (120 of 20 gigas)it uses a small add on to record video ...the quality its very nice...i think more than great for the actual video assit cameras existing today i choose the archos 120 first cause its cheaper than the other series that have bigeer screen ...and looks mopre hard to break .(remmember it have a hard disck on the inside movieng parts and all computer guys now what we are talking about) and i have to think that why showing the material to the director witrh that little screen when i can send it by your wirelles video ..when you are dock and relaxing...the easy way to make a cable for power its to buy the car adaptor wich is 12 volts to 5 volts ..and custimused your self. ihave made me a cable that give power and send video in the same cable.... i own a mk-v sled with the first model lcd monitor fro mk-v i have monted the archos inside the cage that came with the monitor (perfect fit) and modify the add on for video recording so can be place below the unit insted of be attach to it ...i will post pics as soon i get my digital camera back.... other thing good about the archos its that record on divx or xvid and its a easy shearing format ...and also u can upgrade de codecs from the archos page... ps thanks for trying to understand my english guillermo "archos fan" nespolo ps 2 funny the way that the archos smells when used on the computer ...and also good to keep your hand worm in the winter.... :huh: :huh: :huh: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 1, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 1, 2004 Here's a reason why transmitting video to the director while you are controlling the video at the sled is not a good idea: if you are docked any distance from video village (likely), many times during playback there is a need to discuss things with the director/DP, point at the screen, use slow mo or freeze frame to point out something, etc etc. Being separated will make this a yelling match across the set. That's not to say that it isn't nice to be able to transmit video anyway, since there are many other departments and personnel that can benefit from playback (the AD's can fix background issues, the AC can see exactly when you are leaving one actor for another etc.). I just find that you have to be physically next to the director or DP when watching playback for it to be a truly useful tool, and have control of the playback as well. Chad Persons Hi Chad, One thing that struck me with my sled (Sachtler Artemis Cine-HD) is that my video power connectors (one at the top, one at the bottom of the sled) WILL transmit my playback from the sled. Great feature not mentionned anywhere in the Artemis papers. I don't remember if the PRO sled offers this option, knowing also that the PRO and Sachtler rigs share the same connectors and plugs. I think it is a great thing to have for everyone. The directors and AD'S are always stunned when I transmit the playback the first time. And the few times when I want to screen privatly, I just turn the modulus off since there is no "transmitting" switch on the sled... To follow with those hard disc recorders, I still use a Sony GVD but find it bulky and heavy, great to add weigth with smaller cameras but I am looking at those new gadgets like the Lyra and reading everyones comments, keep them comming in. And what about working these in the cold, most of these things work with "touch screens" that are so fragile in the cold, I wonder.... My Sony has taken such beatings from rain and snow and freezing nights...One thing is sure, I won't get rid of my Sony, when everything else will fail, this will save the day as it does day after day for now in every conditions. How can we do that simply? Could you not loop out of the monitor into your transmitter (TB6 has a video loop through)?My on-board recorder plays back into my monitor. Come to think of it this would be a good way to transmit framelines as well (sadly,on screen level too) I could control the playback with a remote from the the directors monitor. Now Archos has introduced a new device with an "almost DVD" resolution, as they call it. Has anyone tested this device especialy for the improved onboard monitor and resolution? Would it be wise to get the 80 gig version, for as I think the storage capacitiy has to increase due to the better resolution, or do the 20 gigs do the job? I agree that focus is always critical to judge going through the groundglass and the video, as Peter once mentioned. But for video this should work then. The question is: does it?? Anyone?
