Well the transmitter arrived on Tues as promised. Emery emailed me with updates all during the week so it was no surprise that it arrived when promised. First impressions: Well it comes in a nice little pelican case that holds all the cables, antenna, and the transmitter itself. Nice touch, nothing is worse than dropping a load of cash of a piece of gear, then to have them say, "oh by the way, the case is extra" It is like buying a 100,000 dollar car and then being charged for the floormats. Anyway, the transmitter is larger than the modulus by a fair margin it it also much more solid in feel. It gives you the sense that there is not much wasted space inside the case. The weight is not a deal breaker for me, I will gladly trade a few ounces for increased reliability and functionality. To that end, the fit and finish is excellent. The user menu seemd fairly easy to navigate. I was able to dial down the power, change channels, shut of the audio, and adjust the display brightness all without reading the manual. The display is very easy to read and gives you feedback as to the battery voltage and wether or not you have a signal on the video line. Suffice it to say, I had the the unit up and running in a matter of minutes. My initial tests showed that where my modulus was starting to breakup, canatrans was quite clear. In fact, at about 20 feet away I had to bring the wattage to below an 1/8 of a watt to keep the picture from rolling. Furthermore the modulus was on the top of the rig and the canatrans was on the bottom. At this point, I don't claim the results to be anything more than anectdotal at best. But, I expect that with 7/8ths of the power still available to me, I will be able to "get out" in more challenging situations than ever before. I will post more as I can do a liitle more testing with the two transmitters side by each. But I have sent the modulus off to Cramped Attic to get it tuned up. Oh and one more thing Emery called the day it arrived in case I had any questions or feedback. Talk about customer service. So far, I am very pleased with the product. Stay tuned for the next installment- Where Kenn tries his particular brand of neglect and abuse on the Cantranas.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply - I haven't been on the forum for a while... I installed an additional power/video connector on the front of my sled (Ultra) and I use it mostly for low mode shots, but also when I need to lower the sled CG in high mode...

Just a quick question.

The connector at the top and bottom. Is that an antenna connector, or a power/video connector for the tx.

I was curious because I thought about making the TX part of the sled in the bottom, and just having the antenna on top.

Also, in the video / HD world, do you guys still run a TX next to the camera? On top of the camera? Any fear of RF hits on the tape?

Yep, it finally happened. After i asked CIT for some new selectors for the modulus 3000 6 month ago, i am fed up with them. The give me that unit cine feeling. First the Say, sure, we send some over to you for free. Then it was 35 dollar each and then no replies anymore. So i cant change channels anymore. Now, after reading all the posts about the canatrans, i am gonna make the big step and did order one. I am gonna use my Hercules reciever, and sell the modulus.

I'll let you know how it turns out with the canatrans, but what i have heard, it will be fine.

My canatrans showed up under the christmastree. Well, i have to say, its very sexy. Nice to see your own name if you start it up. Nice feature that when you shut down the camera, the transmitter shuts down too. I even didnt read the manuel, its very easy to work with. In my opinion, the results are just better than the modulus. Only my test was with the canatrans on 1/8 of its power. After that the canatrans wins big time. Longer distance, less picture lose.

Lentequip has upgraded their Canatrans video transmitter with new firmware. I sent mine in for the upgrade as soon as I heard about it and my transmitter was shipped back after one day in the shop, making good on Emery?s promise to provide expedient service. The cost is only $100.00 US to upgrade from the older firmware and this includes a new antenna (not available yet, but promised soon) which makes it an exceptional value. New units come with the new firmware and antenna, at the same price as before, about $4000.00 US

As good as the original was, Emery Soos has responded to every complaint I had about it. The available frequency range has been dramatically expanded and now covers Channels 20-50 and the output is now carefully adjusted so that all channels transmit with equal power. (With the first version, I found it necessary to range check each channel as some were transmitting with less power than others, so just finding a clear frequency was not enough to ensure maximum distance. Now all channels appear to have the same range as long as the frequency is relatively open.) Emery says the new antenna in development will transmit over the entire new bandwidth more efficiently than the current one (which is biased towards the top end of the band that the older version was restricted to). I found the current antenna very useable with lower frequencies, however, so if you upgrade or buy a new unit before that antenna is available you can still use the old antenna on the new lower frequencies with only a small reduction in range.

The menu system is far friendlier now ? Previously I sometimes got confused about which line of the display was the active one, it is now clearly indicated. I also got impatient waiting for the startup message to clear so I could adjust transmit power or frequency or video gain after turning the unit on ? now simply pressing the right button after powering on takes you immediately to the first operating menu. Emery has reorganized the menu structure as well so that the most commonly adjusted features (the three I just mentioned) are right at the top AND all three are displayed in the first menu at all times, so a glance at the unit at anytime will tell you everything you need to know.

When I received my upgraded unit (one of the very first to leave the factory) I encountered a problem after about 3 days of use. I shipped it back and Emery immediately shipped me a loaner which I got the next day. Before shipping the loaner, however, he checked the transmitters he had in stock and located the trouble - "a cold solder joint on a BGA (ball grid array) part" which meant a small adjustment in the assembly process eliminated the problem in all the units. Emery told me that each unit is burned in for 24 hours before leaving the factory, but this problem only showed up after several days of use. My repaired transmitter was back in my hands a day later.

Little glitches like this are almost unavoidable for a new product, but how they are handled makes all the difference. The only unknown about the Canatrans had been how Lentequip would handle service, because my transmitter never even hiccupped. That question has now been answered and I give highest marks possible to Lentequip.

I highly recommend the firmware upgrade, and I really don?t have any more complaints!!!

As many of you know I have decided to ditch my Modulus 3000 due to their abysmal customer support (What customer support). I took deliver of my Canatrans yesterday on the set of the feature I am doing and all I have to say is WOW.

This unit ROCKS, the Customer Service ROCKS. All around a fantastic decision to upgrade to the clearly superior transmitter.

The menu structure is self explanatory, infact I set it up without consulting the manual :) (Later I did go back and read the manual)

The signal from it is rock solid, I was doing some pursuit work on a Quad-runner and the director and DP were sitting comfortably at video village sipping on mocha-capo-frapachinos watching and recording a solid no hit's signal, something that the M3000 would never do.

All in all I couldn't be happier with the investment. Well Done Emery!

BTW if any Modulus owners need 3 Modulus to Pro cables I have them left over and they are for sale. a 5", a 9" and a 18" $200 takes them all....

Eric, you'll love this thing.

Hey, I posted this under another thread, but it seems to make more sense here:

"And for those not aware, the Canatrans now operates from channels 20-50! Yes, much needed additional channels and a better user interface. For those who've already made the plunge, units can be upgraded (Emery turned mine around in a day or so) for a $100 (covers parts).

Once again, Emery raises the bar.

I think you HAVE to have a UHF transmitter in this biz because everyone on set is using watchmen these days (sound mixers, ADs, etc). I've even seen boom ops with a tiny watchman strapped to their wrist."

Cheers.

What Larry says!!!!!

Seriously, I commented on this far less eloquently and far briefer than Larry in another thread, but the gist of the message is the same. Emery has improved upon an already great product. In my mind, this has become the new transmitter of choice in this industry. Bravo.

And Willie, why do you not give a last name with your post? Why do you become a member on March 9th to ask this question and not post again until April 14th. According to your profile, you do not own a Steadicam. What is your interest in the Canatrans? Could you be another manufacturer?????
