Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted November 25, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 25, 2009 Don't take it hard. You work with what you have. As time goes by you figure out what extra little bits to have and better ways to do things so that you don't have to work so hard. Sometimes these forums can be a really supportive place :-) My pictures didn't get any shit so I think im going to fly that 6x6 studio matte box all the time in an attempt to make the Red (and my ACs head) look really small :-) If the cameras LOOK smaller they will be lighter right? ~Jess

Fully agree. It was actually a rather light setup, just ridiculous looking. All i had handy to try to lighten the mood a bit. Don't have my BL4 pictures handy but this setup ended up being just as heavy. ~Jess
Aaron Horrocks
I've read that the 3A Arm with "Gold Springs" can support up to 57 pounds, but now on this thread I see that 65 and even 70 pounds are quoted. Does anyone actually have a solid figure? Did these products ever come with a manual?

(I'm not Jerry or Garret, so I may not be 100% correct but,) 57Lbs is the maximum camera payload. 65/70Lbs is the amount of total weight (Camera+Sled+batteries+other crap) that that the arm will support. I might need an old timer with a better memory to correct me here -- 3A arms from CP came with black or gold springs (the same arm with blue, green or red springs were for the efp steadicams?). If I remember correctly the black spring median load was 55-ish and the gold's were 60-ish, each bottoming out maybe 3 to 5 lbs over the median load. It's been a long time since I have owned, let alone thought about this! There were mods that increased the weight carrying capacity of gold spring arms to over 70 lbs, but they were risky. They included shortening the springs, using giant rubber bands/surgical tubing, sacrificing a chicken and adding helium balloons to the camera. Shortening the spring coils required anyone within a 50 ft radius to wear kevlar and goggles to protect from exploding debris. The PRO arm is the beefiest and it's max according to GPI is 72 lbs (some say 75?) which is A LOT of weight -- do the math, that's a heavy-ass camera that really shouldn't be flown. Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted November 9, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted November 9, 2011 CP Black springs were rated for 51 pounds (total load). CP Gold springs were rated at 57 pounds (total load). As Ron said, there were a number of arms that came in higher (Gold springs from 61 to 67 pounds even - this meant their minimum weight was higher as well). Rob Luna has modified arms and made his own springs so the numbers on "newer" 3a arms are a bit different. As for the PRO arm, it is rated to 72 pounds with four black springs, but I've had mine to 75 (yuk).
