Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted February 16, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 16, 2009 I didn't know him peronally, but that's horrible. Getting into this business his pictures on the back cover of ASC Mag was always something I looked forward to. Â rb
Sean Jensen
Sad to hear that.  Some 20+ years ago, when I was young, stupid and just falling in love with that machine we all love to talk about, I gave Bob a call to ask him about Steadicam. Called that number on the back of American Cinematographer. I probably came off as a dumb kid but he still took the time to talk and answer my questions. Since then I've had quite a successful career with the Steadicam. I never met him in person but he definitely inspired me in my fledgeling career.  Cheers Bob & thanks  Sean

Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted February 17, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 17, 2009 :( I worked as a 2nd ac on a few shows he operated on. He was a really cool guy. He was pretty good friends with my father (who passed away a few months ago) so I would imagine they are kicking back and enjoying a cold one together right about now. Â He'll be missed... Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted February 17, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 17, 2009 I hate doing these....very sad. Â Bob Ulland is now in the SG website in the memoriam pages.. Â I scanned a few of his awesome Ad's from ASC magazines I had laying around in my garage. Â I've also added a new BLOG to the SG website, so if anyone would like to write a few words on the BLOG, I think it would be a nice tribute to him. Â I was a big fan of his work. Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted February 17, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 17, 2009 Once again, this community is saddened to learn of the passing of a brother operator. Â I had the pleasure of meeting Bob years ago while teaching a Workshop out in Malibu. A kind and truly creative individual with an infectious smile and a quick wit. Â When he pulled up in the parking lot, we were running the class through the vehicle drills and I had a group out with the pickup truck and Garfield mount. He waved me over to his car and while popping the trunk lid, he asked "Hey, you wanna buy some Steadicam parts?" Then he pulled back a cloth covering an assortment of stuff including a Donkey Box and other trinkets. I quickly looked around, like the Aluminum Police might happen along at any moment, and indicated that the DBox and some other anodized bits would be just what I needed. After settling up, we enjoyed discussing various Steadicam stories and other bits of life over some cold refreshing beverages. Â Bob will be missed by all that knew him, either directly or from those famous ads on Cover 4 of the ASC magazine. Â I would say he had a bit of the "Captain" in those poses!
