thanks for your response

IMP also say that they will retro fit their hummingbird/black to accept and display HD signals once they have come up with the circuitry (whilst not at HD definition). I would also assume this would apply to the mk-v model too.

The blackbird/hummingbird is meant to be fairly water resistant. Do you protect your monitor in the rain?

Howards modified monitor is totally rain proof.

Never played with the transvideo cine, but i assume a level of good protection is required. Im going to have to quiz ICE FILMS in london about this on monday. So its a close race between the two.

Anybody in london with a hummingbird fancy coming to ICE this week and doing a side by side review?

Sure, I have a Blackbird, let me know when you're around and I'll see if I'm free

Regarding water resistance. As with all electronics, regardless of guarantee of water resistance, I am very careful about protection. Electronics generally fail when wet so I never try to tempt fate by not covering my monitor/follow focus/modulus and bottom stage for that matter, from rain and heavy mist. So get good rain gear that fits well, keeps the water out, and goes on easily.

By the way, used the rig on Rescue Me today in both interior and exterior locations,as well as interior/exterior locations and have absolutly no complaints with the monitor.

After looking at them carefully, they all have their disadvantages/advantages. Weight, ability to fit HD in the future, ease of menu s etc etc , as said before this dicission needs to be made carefully

this is the Raindbow SB, cinemonitor IIISB and the Hummingbird. All wicked monitors.

I personally might get the Rainbow SB (900 NIT), It seems to have a good price, a very good field of view and very easy and quick menu s. I also suspect due to its weight it might fit well on the Alien Revolution when I get one. Howard?

I am not bothered about the weight as i dynamically balance using batteries (front and rear mounted) for other people the dicision could be very different, The Cinemonitor has a very comprehensive menu and the Hummingbird has great hotkeys.

What I didnt know is that these monitors achieve their brightness by having sort of "fluorescent tubes" behind the screens lighting them up! I wonder what will happen when they start using lumileds!!!!!!!! bright!

Thomas

whats wrong with the latest offering from Tiffen Ultrabrighty style ?

What about the Panasonic HD 8" ishy.

Ive been using Panasonics 7" for many many years and have been very happy.

Yes they are rubbish but light, low power, cheap and multi use.

I still carry a green screen with me for confidence but very rarely get it on the rig.

Gotta say that my old mod 111 3" green screen is unbeatable in terms of green screen, bright as a button and sharp as a pin and no noise and 25 years old, thankyou David at Marell.

Howard's LCD is superb has all the little things you may miss if you do not have them like tally input and light built in.

Still think that the 7" Panasonic that I mentioned on this forum must be 5 years ago is still king of price and performance.

Hope this all confuses you

Love

Joe

yo joe

need to order some of those nice blue J bracket s from your baerbell shop.

yeah tiffen ultrabright is way to pricy for me... i could get a secondhand TB6 or something at that price.

not looked at the panasonic HD8in .. sounds interesting, although im not sure if i want an HD monitor because then ill have to have a cable (my transmitter only does SD)- feeble excuse, of course i want HD

and the panasonic! 7in! well yes, this is what i use! and its embarrasing when the director can see a light shining down the lens and u cant because it overscans so much. Its soft, real soft! everything looks constantly out of focus. But its what ive used for 2 years succesfully and now it only costs 485 dollars... whats that 50 pence with bush s present deal.

Remember that NITS is not the only measure of good screen viewability. The anti-glare coating on the screen is really what can make the difference between an image in daylight and nothing at all. The guys at Nebtek have a great demo of two identical screens with just one of them sporting Nebtek's coating. The difference is alarming. There may be some technical measurement for anti-glare efficiency but I've never heard it and it certainly isn't published with spec sheets.

Since ZGC No longer represents the hummingbird in the US. perhaps when making these kinds of choices we should consider where we live.

The hummingbird is mfg. in England. At this point they have no US distributor or repair facility. The transvideo people have offices on Ventura. in N Hollywood. There is somthing to be said for buying from a supplier who can replace or repair your unit without a circumnavigation of the world.

Perhaps some posts about repair, times, shipment issues, and temporary replacement policies would give potential purchasers of LCd type monitors useful info?

I own a Hummingbird and am overall pleased with the image quality, I have had some usability and maintenance issues. I looked at the transvideo ultra brite at NAB and was impressed with it's viewability while looking right into a small HMI placed about 10ft away. Both of these monitors make a very bright sunlight viewable image. The Hummingbird is a littler larger heavier and stranger looking, except Howards conversion which costs a little more but looks really cool.

Hello, I was just wondering if anybody was using the 6" transvideo cinemonitor IIIa super bright and what you think of it compared to the hummingbird? How does it fair in sunlight? I have purchased a MK-V/hummingbird 8 months ago and have only just recently recieved the demo. I like it alot but I am starting to loose faith in waiting for this very expensive peice of gear I am yet to see. I am thinking of alternatives and do not know anyone in town with transvideo so I have never seen it in action. Any insight would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers

Quincy

hi Quincy - how you been dude? Im in a similar situation - i purchased the mk-v/Hummingbird in feb. and although i have had the demo model since then there is still no sign of the production model i paid for. I know howard has been swamped with orders, and his supplier is slow - but im begining to loose faith too.

Besides the Transvideo, and the Howard version of the Hummingbird, there is the Blackbird that is made directly by Imp Electronics. I have been using it for about one year, and I am pretty happy with its performance, not to mention the customer service of Imp and their new American Distributor Wohler Electronics.

The Blackbird comes with a framline generator, is plenty bright in the sun (was in New Orleans last month and never had a problem with sun, and it gets pretty bright there), and is very adjustable.

If you are interested in finding out about the monitor, you should get in touch with Imp or Leah Christianson at Wohler (888) 596-4537.

Btw, I get nothing out of this plug. I'm just interested in seeing operators explore as many options available, so that their decisions, often times very expensive, are made with the most information obtainable.

Hi Quincy:

I am using the 111a SB and I am very impressed. I did have Transvideo add an anti-glare film to the monitor for $100US. The monitor was highly reflective and made day shooting a problem. Now it is much better although resolution is degraded by a small amount.

The quality of the product is very good and service from Transvideo in L.A. has been great.

Regards,

Neal Norton

Just an update on the Hummingbird.

Woher Electronics is the authorized dealer of Hummingbird in the US. I had a broken connector on my Blackbird, and they replaced the monitor promptly. Very happy with the service.

Secondly, the Hummingbird Blackbird Model comes equpped with a frameline generator and a PRO connector.
