Yes indeed. This is one of those circumstances like "Russian Ark" where it feels almost petty to criticize the operating in light of the big picture--who knows what was going on behind the operator during this (I'm willing to bet that the times the camera slows down and the talent gets almost on top of him that there was something causing that was out of their control). And it is a long and fast-moving shot.

That said, I agree that the operating was less than "rock-solid" by definition. Perhaps this proves why Steadicam operating is best judged on a good-size monitor rather than an iPhone...!

I love the attitude the third girl has when handing off her dress to the second girl.

If we agree that the op was on foot, then I would like to know if he was Don Juan or walking backwards?

On that note, how would most of you done the shot? Also how often do you don jaun and turn the monitor so it is in front of you?

First you have to ask what kind of camera was used? Heavy or light? Also is this a 1 take kind of thing (likely given the subject matter) or will you be expected to do this a thousand times? Did they have to maintain a low profile...no grips or carts etc.? Once you know those things you can better answer the question. One method I would have considered is stepping on to a doorway dolly and being pulled the 3 blocks. Better to concentrate on the framing, horizon, composition, and the black bars. Definitely not Don Juan, I prefer to walk backwards and if it were a light camera, low profile and just one take I would have done just that.

I thought the video was just fine the way it is.

The floaty feel sort of matched the content I thought... reactions of people like something was a little "off" Women stripping and exchanging clothes?

My choice to shoot this puppy would have been my rickshaw. - ;)

I will do anything to stay out of don juan. I suck at it.

Ditto!

If I HAD to do the shot on foot I would definitely have been walking backwards. But I think the idea of stepping onto a doorway sounds like the best plan. The shot would have been better and any amount of takes becomes doable.

Hi all;

Really fun to watch.

I have two points.

1) the words are all backwards on the shops and buildings, etc.

2) I think its a vehicle shot of some sort. The women are walking at a good clip and the camera never hesitates and it even moves left and right for some things on the route.

Darn, now you'll have to watch it again!

JA

If this video was shot in France and they drive on the right side of the Street in France then this video was flipped. The driver in the opening shot is sitting in the right hand seat of the car and is parked on the left hand side of the street. If you were to flip the video then would the driver not then be sitting on the left hand side of the car and be parked on the right side of the street?

Hey guys, I did this spoof on the "Baby Baby Baby" music video for Guitar Hero on steadicam. Had I known I was shooting four naked girls on the Third Street Promenade I would have gotten better rest the night before. Check it out.
