I'm pleased to announce that the rumored Steadicam Monitor Shootout will indeed be happening!

Date:

Sunday, June 14th

Noon to 4 p.m.

Location:

Camera Support

2827 N. San Fernando Blvd.

Burbank, CA 91504

We are scheduled to have daylight viewable HD/SD Steadicam monitors from 7 different manufacturers represented; hopefully all will be present to answer questions and demo features.

It should be a jolly affair. Food and light refereshments will be served; feel free to BYOB.

Obviously this is a subject that pretty much every Steadicam operator is interested in so we expect a great turnout. Please pass the word on to other ops who don't frequent this board.

For those outside LA, we'll be taking stills and perhaps video and I'm sure there will be a lot of follow-up posts on individual's impressions here.

Hi Jens:

I'll be posting a complete list soon, awaiting confirmation from all manufacturers. It's everyone you'd expect.

Charles, Thanks for facilitating this event. It's something that stands to benefit every one of us in a huge way. We appreciate your time and energy that you've put into this.

Looking forward to the results.

Ramon

Update:

Things are coming together beautifully for the shootout! Many thanks to those who are helping out in one way or another.

I've made up a little site with all of the pertinent info. There are many operators who don't check in here, so let's get the word out and send this link to any and all ops in the greater LA area (and those willing to travel from elsewhere):

Monitor Shootout

Here is the current list of manufacturers whose products will be represented:

Boland (HD LCD)

GPI (greenscreen SD CRT)

LC (HD LCD from Bulgaria)

Lumavec/Blackbird (SD LCD)

Marshall (HD LCD, OLED)

Nebtek (HD LCD)

Tiffen (HD LCD, OLED)

Transvideo (HD LCD)

XCS (greenscreen SD CRT)

As of now Marshall, Nebtek, Tiffen and Transvideo will have reps on site to answer questions, demo and show additional product.

For those who can't attend, it will be great to provide stills and video that can be posted after the event. Any volunteers to do a nice scientific job of this?

Don't really see the point, to be honest. I think we've all seen LCD monitors wash out in the sun. I had thought about having a separate interior comparison of standard LCD's but I had to draw the line at some point. I feel it safe to say that every Steadicam operator needs a daylight viewable monitor; the classic wisdom is to have a standard LCD (or lesser-grade green screen) as a backup, however since several of the daylight units being showed are in the $3-4K range, I would think these would be a more likely backup and will be more or less useable under all conditions, thus better.

Some of the manufacturers will have non-daylight panels at their tables, I think.

I was planning on attending anyway, though it'll be some time before the research will directly affect me. So I'll be there and not as immersed as everyone else, so I'd be happy to take bunch of stills and lay them out all organized like, making sure to get a still of each monitor for every angle/light that is experimented with. Etc, yada yada. Jess I figure you'll be more invested in the experimenting than I, so I'd be happy to help you with all that.

Not sure what you're looking for with video, Charles (usually motion I've heard), but if you know what you want to get I could handle that too.

Thanks for offers guys, I should have posted a response but I'm spinning plates trying to get this off the ground. I have enlisted a photographer to do a scientific job of it, so I think we have that covered. I wouldn't mind having some video of the event, mostly as a documentation but it might also be interesting to see some impressions of the monitors (seeing each rotate through the 90 degrees for viewing angle analysis, that sort of thing). If one of you wants to bring a decent camera and tripod and capture this, please feel free. As far as the documentation, if someone puts together a jazzy little 3 minute edited clip documenting the event and hijinks I'll put that up on the site. I was planning to try to shoot some stuff myself but I have a feeling my hands will be full...!

Thanks all!

The event is this Sunday (tomorrow)!

So far the weather is forecast to be partly cloudy by afternoon so we should be OK--be nice if the sun pops out! I'll have supplemental units there to simulate sunlight as best as we can. As we all know, cloud cover can be just as diabolical for screen reflections as direct sunlight anyway so there will be a lot to learn even if we never see the sun...

As a reminder, it's noon to 4 p.m., and bring some adult beverages if you like.

See you then!
