  1. As of now they seam very much visual copies made from pictures either made on trade shows or internet. They don''t have the mechanics nor physics down as of yet... that will probably change once somebody sits down with them and explains the workings... but at that point there price will go up steep as quality costs money and we are a VERY small market for that kind of investment... Tried it... not there yet. So no, if you are serious of making this your sole income... stay away. Sincerely, Erwin
  2. E-mail me off forum for potential sellers... Sincerely, Erwin
  3. Finally had to bite the bullet and work with one of those... Just got back from the prep at Panavision... a little Sony, a little Genocide, a little Millennium... etc. See result below: Erwin
  4. Heading north tomorrow, to Portland Oregon for a feature... Production was mentioning Snow... Not that great, you know what kinda nature guy I am, NONE... as it's in the 80-ies here in LA... you still in New York? Erwin
  5. No you didn't... Jamie, Do you know who you are calling names? Just wondering, Erwin
  6. SOLD! Thank you for everyone that contacted me... man so many... for a $25.- bucks saving... baffled... Erwin
  7. Not the greatest pix, but give it a shot... I'm sure I have better ones somewhere... Good Luck, Erwin
  8. That would be a no... I was told again and again to not power anything non RED from the camera body. Meaning plug in your viewfinder and onboard monitor but that's about it. I was told that the body can't handle it, so the accessory plugs on the back are worthless. Any kind of power spikes are rewarded with a shutdown... So much for professional gear, Erwin
  9. Nice... http://www.zylight.com/servlet/StoreFront But prices are in the range with the Light Panel... as a non lighting camera man... no reason to. I loved the lights that Howard Preston came up with, completely integrated into the Preston System... whow... http://www.prestoncinema.com/products_ledeyelight.html Again just needed something small, light and quick... Later, Erwin
  10. Frickish tall... Contact Will Arnot, he has a Backmount with the drop down carbon arm... he is on this forum I think he is taller then Garrett. There was a guy from Bonn Germany in my Steadicam class way back, name is Roland Kaatz, If I'm not mistaken. He was scrapping the ceiling in Malibu... he does the Fussball running at the sidelines... In Germany... I have a pix somewhere... I'll dig it out. Garrett is tall so is George Paddock... it was long the assumption that you had to be north of 6'5" to become a great Steadicam operator... And then came Bob Ulland and Charles Papert... and Bob's your Uncle... Later, Erwin
  11. Actually we put them side by side and the LitePad was, at full blast, slightly brighter but was falling of faster. Also the panel is more directional, the pad disburses faster (as the LED,s are mounted sideways and are reflected via cascading mirrors) and doesn't look directional. And at that size and price... I was just looking from the point of an operator as you know I'm no DP and never want to be one... I'll director though... just to give a little eye light or bring the faces up on a walk and talk... Velcro and plug it in. I had flashlights and small fixtures gaff taped to my rig the camera and even to yours truly... (can we tape that to your Vest??? Where are you running to???) I brought it to the set of Dexter and the reply was where were you yesterday??? The Gaffer, Earl C. Williman was like where and how much... (I think by now he has picked up the gaffer kit from Filmtools) yeah he was complaining about the green, but they tried it with correction and diffusion and it was still only at 60% and still lit everybody around the table... Even Romeo liked it. I like it and thought I share... Later, Erwin
  12. As I was already making pictures, here a size comparison of the 3 Preston Motors... DM-1, DM-1X and DM-2 Later, Erwin
  13. I used to own one of the Light Panels but never was quite satisfied, neither with the mounting nor the out put. Also a dedicated battery was also not the hit and the weight...... I solved that with making cables to power directly from the rig and also made a one of adapter that would take Anton bauer batteries instead of the standard bricks... And of course, the moment I sold it, I got requests for some light on the rig... Now I came across these Lite Pads and was just curious and got a little demo at film tools... it looked nice but I got turned of when I saw the kit prices... But they told me that I could buy every item separately... and then it came to the individual prices... a pad 3x6 inches: $119.- I bought 2. The round one for a little eye light: $76.-, cables all around $20.- to $30.- each... You can even run the bugger on either AA batteries or C batts... I'm getting an adapter to use my M-style lithium from my Preston... and then came the big but... what about the dimmer? Oh they are pricey!... I thought there we go... They are $235.- for a single channel... but you can dim up to 4 pads with that dimmer... As the pad is 500 mA... and gives you 6000K light. And it's none directional... nice... 8mm think, we are talking ounces... just velcro it onto the mattebox and there we go. I'm getting an attachment made to the dimer to be able to remotely adjut the light with my Preston... the bracket and gear will cost me way more them the dimmer and the light are worth... oh well. I'm no DP but check it out, I think it's worth it. Erwin http://www.rosco.com/us/video/litepad_ho.asp http://www.filmtools.com/rosco-litepad.html
  14. Did you try: http://www.alangordon.com/s_dollyjibs.html http://www.panther-gmbh.de/cms/en_usedequipment.html http://www.cineused.com/misc.html Good Luck, Erwin
  15. As long as you don't start to stand around at street corners now... :)
  16. You can get a Gimbal Post Clamp from GPI for $20.- As I dought that you will get an actual bearing ( for that go to either Rig engineering or Bear-Bel, they have conversion Links with integrated bearings as upgrades for 3A arms... but cost considerably more)... Bob DeRose use to make an over sized Delron washer that you would put on the post so that the weight from the rig distributed through the Gimbal clamp would rest on the delon and be a little better to turn the gimbal on the arm... It never even came close to what GPI later did with the Bearings in there arm... Oh well let us know, Erwin
  17. All new XCS Ultimates are coming from the assembly line with HD-SDI down the center post also all in the field Ultimates can easily be retrofitted... Still don't see the reason for it as there are no good enough HD monitors out there yet that could rival my Green Screen... Oh well, as long as you have your choices, right? Erwin
  18. Nice job with the manuals... just next time smile a little... :) I like the Turf wheels... reminds me a little of F-1 cars... Thanks again, if I just now had one to practice with.... hhhhhmmmm. Later, Erwin
  19. I had my DM-1X (P#4203) for four weeks now the first in the field... (Serial #3002), I happend to be minutes away from Preston when they called, I beat David Emmerichs by about an hour, (he got #3003). It's almost as tall as the DM-1 but has the round shape like the DM-2. Size (mm): DM-1X : 117x54x31 DM-1 : 122x75x33 DM-2 : 100x50x28 It's fast!!! 4 revolutions per sec. To compare... for the time it took the DM-2 to calibrate the Iris (On a Cooke S-4) the DM-1X did the Focus and they stopped almost at the same time... and it got some grunt going, twice the power of the DM-1. Weight wise the specs tell 415 grams for both versions of the DM-1 versus 290 grams for the DM-2. But in hand, the X feels lighter... maybe it's just me... For all you PAM users. The Rosetta from the DM-2 is just to short to fit into the motor, the one for the DM-1 is to long... it sticks out about 2mm on each side... I'm using a DM-1 rosetta right now, but it's not ideal with all that might this puppy puts out... I was told it's in the works. Other differences: The lemo connector key way, is starting with this motor, facing up (towards the gear). That was per request of many non steadicam customers. If you use right angle motor cable on both sides and use the Arricam LT and mount the motors from the top, you will get a nasty surprise... the cable is to short... I got my keyway inverted... now all is fine. Then the Out put gear is free spinning, not like the older ones where you could not move the gear... at any circumstances unless you employed a hammer that is... (hey I have seen AC's put a hammer to a lens once... actually twice... never to my motors... though) Also the greater speed and power comes with a price: $3250.- plus $62.- for the bigger out put gear. Versus the $2885.- the DM-1 and the DM-2 go for these days. I love mine, considering that I was bugging Howard for 2 years for it, I didn't expect anything else! So much for now... Erwin PS: Oh check out his new Digital Micro Force with Digital read out and soft stop... nice. Available in October!!!
