anyone tried the new marshall 6.5' hd monitor?
Jess Haas SOC replied to Ryan Spearman's topic in Monitors
Just checked out the Nebtek steadicam version on their website and I have to say I am impressed. http://www.nebtek.com/proddetail.php?prod=...D7SC&cat=31 I know many of us bugged them about their monitor lacking certain features at the monitor shootout and it looks like they have taken it to heart and included almost all of them. Marshall got the same treatment but as far as I know the results have not been the same. It is nice when a manufacturer listens to its customers. ~Jess -
Jim, so if I supply you with a name and show up at your house with a pickle at say 5pm this evening I can expect the job to be done? ~Jess

I bet you anything they are telling those LA based operators that they have to work for that because they can easily get a local operator for that amount or less. ~Jess

anyone tried the new marshall 6.5' hd monitor?

What seemed to really kill that OLED was the reflectivity of the screen. The 6.5" LCD had better viewability but as I said the OLED was a prototype so things will hopefully impove. One nice thing about the Marshall 6.5" is that since it is transflective it doesn't use as much power as those with super bright backlights yet seems to actually have better viewability. ~Jess -

The OLED prototypes I have seen so far were not very promising as far as daylight viewability so I wouldn't hold my breath. Hopefully things will be different when production monitors become available. ~Jess -

It does not have a flip function and I believe it doesn't have adjustable framelines either. The fact that it is lacking those two features is really annoying since it is a great little daylight viewable monitor. ~Jess -
If you aren't scared of doing a little hacking then unlocking an iphone is realtively straightforward. The only catch is that apple and the people who have been hacking it play a cat and mouse game so the hack allowing you to use the iphone on other networks doesn't always work with the most recent version of the iphone software. Once you have your phone hacked this isn't a problem as long as you don't ever use itunes to try to update your phone software (it will ask you and you have to make sure to say no). When buying a phone you need to make sure that the version it is running is currently hackable. http://blog.iphone-dev.org is where you can find the tools and find out if they work on the most recent version. ~Jess

Anyone have any experience taking gear to the UK without a Carnet? I fly out at 7am tomorrow and it seems that getting a Carnet is a bit out of the question. I am actually only taking my wireless follow focus and video so I can keep it rather small and hope for a green light. Any idea my chances of that working? What kind of paperwork and red tape will be necessary when I get there if they decide to question my gear? From what I have read some sort of deposit is required but that it really requires getting some sort of broker involved. Anyone have any experience? This is an extremely low budget project which has decided to rent my gear last minute and of course production has no idea about dealing with customs, etc... As far as getting my gear back into the US I am bringing receipts to prove that it all origionated in the US. The US customs website suggests that this should work. I would register my gear with them which I have done with other gear in the past but again the 7am flight kind of makes that difficult. ~Jess

Heading off to the other side of the pond and planning on using my wireless video setup but my Sony receiver only supports NTSC. So will a F900R with downconverter board ouput NTSC? I can't find any different model numbers for the parts between the US and the UK but I also can't find any reference to a way to set which standard you want in the manual. Anyone know? The monitor we are using(Sony 17" LCD) doesn't care if it gets NTSC or PAL. If that fails, does anyone have a PAL receiver they will loan me? I think my modulus will transmit PAL(atleast my handheld directors monitor could receive it when the redbyte was actually set to PAL) ~Jess

I was a little grumpy when I woke up this morning :-) I don't want there to be any hard feelings. If this post was alone I wouldn't have thought much of it but he posted in 6 different threads including small amounts of iinformation then going on to pitch his products. I hope there are no hard feelings but I also hope that in the future Wolf will be a little more selective about pitching his products as the collection of threads seemed more like an attempt at disguising advertisements than an attempt to share useful information. ~Jess

Modulus 2000 Antenna
Jess Haas SOC replied to Michael Jones's topic in Video Assist and Video Accessories
If nothing else works out let me know. I have been thinking about cutting some new antennas for mine as the rubber of my rubber ducky is almost completely gone now. Will probably be a month or so before I actually get around to it but if you are still looking then I can make a batch of them. They would be simple whips cut to frequency. ~Jess -
"Flashbox" for D-21, F35,.....
Jess Haas SOC replied to Jens Piotrowski SOC's topic in Cameras (Film/Video/HD)
20watts isn't all that bad. Thats only like 1.7amps. Less would of course be better, but in the high end HD world unfortunately this is what we have to deal with. ~Jess -
Are you using a backmount vest? I have heard similar things happening with them as it is possible to pinch a nerve. ~Jess

Do some searching as I believe this has been discussed some on here before. Fisher actually makes skates for their dollies. I used skates that were designed for a doorway dolly on one shoot but they were a custom job. I don't see rubber tires working well. If you are just moving in a straight line building something should be rather simple. Taking a grinder to a couple of steel plates should get you some blades. Rust will be a problem if its not stainless. Regular operating on ice is also possible but of course not at high speed. I have used stabilicers(http://www.32north.com/prod_stab.htm) on an ice skating rink and was pleasantly surprised at how stable I was. I even did some running while in low mode for the follow the puck shot. ~Jess

rental house won't rent clip-on
Jess Haas SOC replied to Brad Grimmett's topic in General Discussion
If you haven't tried this already talking to the rental house yourself or even going down there could do a lot to straighten out the situation. I have been in somewhat similar situations that turned out to be more misscommunication than anything. Also in my experience when someone gives a BS reason like that for something it is often because they don't have one available to rent and don't want to admit it. Sometimes you can talk a little sense into them and get them to fix that. ~Jess -

I am on a shoot in Long Beach on Saturday and Sunday with the F900R. Should be possible to test it out on set if you want to bring it by. ~Jess -
For some reason I was picturing a worm shaft which would most likely be cut on a lathe but it does make far more sense that the gear would be made out of nylon and it very well could be made on a a mill. If not using CNC a lathe would still most likely be in order for atleast a few pieces of the process. I obviously haven't seen the mechanics of this particular piece. None of this of course changes what I was saying. It can be made so don't worry too much, alteast until you have more information. ~Jess

I would think that a machinist who knows what they are doing should be able to make one on a lathe. Could be wrong and it might not be terribly cheap but I wouldn't panic just yet. ~Jess
