  1. I also wanna find out how the steadicam gonna develop in the future, both technical and visual. My questions is: Where can I find books/articles/dvds/homepages about steadicam? Where can I find material about the steadicam scenes in The shining, kill bill? Hi Jimmie Here are some sites you may like to visit Steadishot is a great site Garrettcam.com ,steadicenter.com ,landaucamera.com ,steadicam-ops.com ,homebuildtstabilizers.com Book Steadicam Techniques and Aesthetics by Serena Ferrara Focal Press A must read. Also have a look at the archives of this site as well . All the best Louis from down under B)
  2. As for my little project, I've had people email me with some helpful information and will let everyone know how it's coming along. The interview is vintage Ted and I know there are several people out there who would love to see it. David Hi David Welcome back yes the forum has changed very much from the old AOL days to a truly international forum . A great reference book on Ted is ''Light Years"Confessions of a Cinemathographer by Tom McDonough Published by Grove Press ,Inc. New York A quote from Tom ''His (Ted's) persistence in searching for the soul of his machines inspired this book " Its a great read I hope you can find a copy . As for your doco yes you can add my name to the list I would like to have a copy. All the best Louis from down under B)
  3. Hi Daniel You should contact Hugo Langer at Steadirig .He knows everything about the old cp arms. He builds new arms as well which are great for the price. Fly safe Louis from doun under B)
  4. Hi everyone If you only do video jobs Why don't you try and make or buy the mount that fit onto the hot shoe on the handle ? This way the receiver is out of the way when the assistant ,grip rests the camera on the ground or on his /her lap or on the car or mag liner etc,etc I have never liked that bracket .I have drilled a 3/8 hole in the bracket (Right angle bracket) that comes with the BFD and I (on film cameras )always mount it on the handle or off the rosette mount on the side for hand held work . For hot head work (or sticks) I have made up this bracket as seen below which seem to work quite well . Good luck Louis from down under B)
  5. Hi Why don't you just add a solid plate to the end of the glidecam plate and then drill into that all the combinations you like ? Good luck Louis from down under B)
  6. Hi All What I have tried to do is show the different types out there . As far as the first shot the operator was told by the production manager that they got the smallest prompter available so the operator just turned up on set and found that boat anchor. As for the LCD I was doing a corporate and worked very well . As for the last still I did try one like that but I found the handle brackets never locked off and that was a problem . If you don't do any prep work at the rental house (or at least a phone call ) they may send out the boat anchor All the best Louis from down under B)
  7. Hi everyone Here is a few different steadicam friendly and not so not so friendly tele prompters .The transvideo one mounts directly on to the rails and works really well as you can see by my smile .There are many out there that mount off the handle which is fine when you are working off sticks but on a steadicam are useless. All ways have a prep day if possible . Good luck Louis Puli from down under B)
  8. Hi Dave After looking through my Gallery of stills I just had to send this gem CRT'S LCD'S WHO needs it :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Louis Puli from down under

  10. Hi everyone With regards to flipping the image . I was on a shoot the other week where I had a shot where the shot started on a house where the actors came out the front door and walk under the camera and get into a car and drive off . The director wanted the camera to tilt 180 deg as the actors moved to the car . To get the shot I put my Hill docking bracket onto a Large lighting stand to a height of 10-12 ft and operator from a ladder . There was no budget to get a hot head for the shot. Where is this leading? How am I going to frame the shot when it upside down ?To my disbelief when I first tilted the camera upside down the image flipped itself on my screen???This was the first time I turned a Vari cam HD upside down on my rig "Poor mans low mode ". The shot worked well the director and dp were very happy ( they didn't know how the shot was going to work as well ) A Big thank you to Vari cam designs for this accessory All the best Louis Puli from down under B) Where were using a Varicam HD camera on the shot .
  11. Hi Kim As far as size go's 3 years ago I had a student at the steadicam workshop in Australia who was from Korea She had a very slight build about 5'4"tall I also had a Guy well built who was a grip who wanted to be a operator.(from New York) and he was 6'4'' .By the end of the w/shop both did very well but The star student of that year was the Girl from Korea.First and for most she was a very good camera operator. You shoulda sk your agent for a list of steadicam ops in town and call them all and try every rig out there .After that if you feel steadicam could be for you then you must take a workshop. If you question the value for money? At the workshop you have the best ops in the world Jerry ,Garrett ,Larry, etc 8 to 10 rigs ,cameras of all types food and accommodation etc etc It a Fantastic week you will meet ops from around the world all with passion to learn steadicam . All the very best of luck Louis Puli from down under ps the op from NY was Ron Waters give him a call great guy I know he would help you.
  12. Hi Alex ,Stephen . I to have a similar sled case which I have freighted all around the Asia pacific area with great success. all the best Louis Puli from down under

Hi everyone I need to get a quote on a Pro rig ,Preston or Bartec / transmitters etc etc Full kit for a feature in Paris latter in the year .I will need the kit only for a week.Would any owner ops be interested in dry hire ?If not could you email me a list of rental houses that may help . Thanks Louis Puli from down under
  14. Hi Daniel This has always been a problem with the 3,3a arm post where you lock off the post on the arm . The best way around this problem would be to use a post collar with a delron washer and don't use the lock off on the arm it self .This way the post would move freely in the arm and in the gimbleas well Pro sale them . 15. Hey, does anyone know who operated Steadicam on "Raging Bull"? It's not credited, but the shot starting inside Jake's dressing room, traveling out into the arena is definitely Steadicam. Much thanks! Afton Hi Afton The Operator was Garrett Brown . If you look closely in several of the wide shots you can see him in the crowd . All the best Louis from down under Puli B)
  16. Hi Martin I have a great team of operators and assistants how are also disapointed but like anything if you don't get enough students to pay for these people and equipment they won't go ahead. I have been running workshops down under with great success over the last 5 years but I would have to say with the down turn in the industry here would have to have a part in fewer students. Look if you need any other help just email at lpulicam@tpg.com.au. All the best and I will be running it (I hope ) next year. Louis Puli B)
  17. hey louis...thanks for the reply bro...but in general is master rig heavy? m talking abt the heavy 535,which is ofcourse a pain in the butt....can the arm take the weight of this camera?? regards, kapil verma ;) Hi Kapil The answeer to your question "is the master rig heavy"?I would have to say Yes it is heavy when you compare it to some other rigs that fly the same cameras. I would think the masters arm would be able to fly a 535b as I don't own a masters rig I couldn't say 100% I would be very surprised if it couldn't. My advise Say No to flying the 535.If they (your PM ) wants to know Why? Put him in the rig with the 535 and see how long he lasts .You will get instant respect from him for what you want and a more steadicam friendly camera from the rental house. Good luck Louis Puli Down Under B)
  18. Hi everyone when I first started and I just had enough money for my first rig not extras .I went to ever rental house in town and found out what transmitter, receivers ,focus controls everything I didn't have and was able to hire all of there gear until I could afford to buy my own. I would find out what you are unable to hire and get that ,and then hire the rest until you have the money to buy all the other toys. You can never have enough toys . All the best Louis Puli Down under B)
  19. Firstly How are You ?? Mr NO NAME ?? I was useing a SR2 from another rental house in Melbourne and I was useing the Normal 11 pin fisher plug at the back of the camera under the on board battery. Still no real answers yet I will be testing again later this week .I will let you know if I find anything . Thanks for all of your answers so far. Louis Puli down under B)
  20. Hi Kapil The rigs weight would not be the first thing I would be thinking about if I was asked to fly a 535. Have you tried to lift a 535A or 535 B? Now you are talking Heavy cameras .You will earn every cent when you fly these pigs . I would ask the production if it was possible to use a more friendly steadicam camera like a Moviecam compact or aaton 35. As for the Masters Elite I know friends who use Elite"s. and they fly fine with all 35 mm cameras. just my 2 cents All the best Louis Puli Down Under B)
  21. Hi everyone I was on a shoot yesterday where we had 2 x 16mm cameras anArri SR 3 (Main unit) and a Arri SR2 for Steadicam .I had a problem with my Preston digital 2 which I had not come across before and would like to share with you all . For some reason the Camera Run function would not work on the SR2 from the Preston ?? (blue 11-pinSR2 to the MDR2 ) I was at the time powering the Preston form my Pro sled using 12volts We did power it with 24 volts as well but no go . We even Hard wired the system and again no go.? It wasn’t a problem on Steadicam as I had my assistant just button By hand for me but when went to go on the hot head I had a quiet word to the dp and the SR3 was used and the Preston worked fine . After returning to the rental house I recreated the problem with there Prestons as well And they had the same problem . I also tried an Arri 3 and a 35BL (35mm) and all Prestons worked fine. Whats with the Arri SR 2 and the Preston . Thank Louis Puli from down under B)
