  2. Old Vest / breast plate

What you see is what you get. No pads, straps, or most anything but wear and tear. What there is includes, breast plate with nicely beat up socket block, left chest buckle, right side strap to vest connection and left shoulder latch. Also an unmolested waist plate. If you are looking to build a vest this could be a decent option. Make an offer. please e-mail.

  4. First, no one was hurt in this accident.

This past monday I was to do a step off from a Movietech Phoenix crane but the crane "broke " while balancing for my weight. I was working the shot with the director and DP and a PA of close enough weight was strapped into the seat on the crane and the bucket was filled with lead. The crane was balanced to the PA's weight and he stayed on the crane in a position level to the ground for at least 5 minutes.

Then failure. Above the main arm of the crane is the parallelogram post running from the nose platform through the centerpost to the weight bucket. This post (forgive me if this is not the true name of the post) keeps the platform level to the ground as the crane booms up and down. The post consists of several section each about 4 feet long. This allows the crane to be set up for different lenghts. It was a connection on this post that separated.

When this connection was broken there was nothing to keep the platform level (or stable) and it instantly flopped down 90 degrees leaving the PA swinging upside down and rightfully distressed. The bucket was emptied, our PA returned to land, and tended to by the medic. Thankfully, the crane was high enough off the ground so he was not slammed into the cobblestone street.

Yes, I refused to ride on the crane and no one questioned why.

I have done two or three step offs from the Phoenix but I will no longer.

There is no "visually positive" locking feature on the parallelogram bar. A knob on the end of one section enters the end of another section and is the clamped, an internal clamp / block catches on the edge of the knob securing the sections. However, one can not see if this block is engaged. What is even more disconcerting is that the crane was under load for a period of time before the separation occurred. I would think if the sections were not connected tightly there would be a failure during loading weights. Regardless, there is no way of telling that the sections of the parallelogram bar are locked. If there was a locking pin you could see holding the connection or a collar that joined two piece one could be sure of a true connection.

I don't have a firm grasp of crane mechanics and have been able to do only a simple autopsy of this accident but what I do wish to impart is an awareness that this crane is unsafe to ride as it is now. Efforts are being made here in New York to inform, not just camera people, but all key grips that this crane is unsafe. It is my hope that this info will spread.

The PA is fine. He was sent to the hospital and released later. Sandbags would have been a better choice as a stand in for me (they take direction better) but if bags were used they would have slid off the platform and the weight bucket would have crushed at least one grip.

  5. Just an update. I received the invoice from Pro and the hinge was covered under warranty and my only cost was for the new steel socket block. More importantly, on closer inspection the new hinge APPEARS exactly the same BUT in fact the wall thickness is greater on the new hinge. The hinge has been re-made to deal with the added stress of back mounted vest.

  6. Upon completing the third take of the day (a simple push in to a lock off) I was met with a resounding snap and disheartening shift in mass. The second AC and dolly grip thankfully took the sled form me. The camera (Arricam LT, zeiss lens, a couple of motors- nothing "heavy") did not crash to the ground, since the arm did not snap completely from the hinge.

A quick call to GPI secured a new hinge and socket block shipped out ASAP. Jack at GPI informed me that about 6 arms in the past year have suffered a similar failure. All arms were either in a back mounted vest or vehicle mount (I have used a Klassen vest for 3 years, the arm is about 10 years old).

I would love to know who else has experienced such a failure.

  7. So

After a month of shooting with the F23. Well actually 2 weeks. The F23 was sent back to get something fixed, color shifting in the blacks. I will say it has been easy to work with. The saving grace for me has been a control and power box that the DIT Barry Minnerly made for the cameras. The box has been named the "barry box" and it has removed the issue of power on my end (please see photos below). The box snaps on in place of an Anton Bauer battey and power, remote run to it. On top of the box is a 4 pin xlr so I can give the camera power until Barry can, the box senses and switchs to the greater power source.

The end result is I have 3 or four BNCs coming from me and connecting to a Big fat 5 bnc cable that runs to the DIT. I have been stuck with a sony 900 until the F23 returns, so I need a fourth BNC to get NTSC return for my monitor (no aja box or updated board for the 900). So I have 3 super liteweight BNC's and 1 slightly thick grey bnc (for power) that run from me to the DIT. they consist of HD, Remote, ntsc return and power. Barry is sending 70 volts @ 1 amp to the camera.

Yes, a cable on the rig is less that idea. But I have yet to meet a DP who, given the option of being cabled and having the ablity to shade the camera during the shot, would not have me cabled. Plus I have no desire to entertain carrying the F23 with deck and such.

The "Barry Box" Has made my life easy. I don't need to worry about power and the DP has full camera control. I would recommend e-mailing Barry Minnerly(barry@vigits.com) about the real nitty gritty. He has only made 2 and is full time on our job but this could be a real aid to operators out there.

I know I have forgotten something so I'll do my best to keep updating.
