  1. Double net to stop the wind by 1 stop, single for a 1/2 stop!

    THAT was funny.

I used to go with a Double Net. If shooing directly into the wind, get a few grips on board. Have them carry 4x4 solids. Make a "V" behind you with them. The wind will blow into the area where you are standing and be forced back out. The net effect ( heh. "net effect" . ) will be to create an area of calm air around you and the sled. The same wind that was working against you is now your aerodynamic friend !!

    Works like a chahm.

  2. Evening all !

We still have a few slots open in our Lake Arrowhead Classic Steadicam Workshop. Held last year at the UCLA Conference Center up at the Lake, it was a resounding success. Fun long hard days, great gear, nifty visitors and accessories ( We had the SteadiRover there for a day, courtesy of Tony Foresta and Kay Armstrong at FTC ).

If you are considering a full-length big rig workshop, take a look at our Workshops web site. All of the details on tuition and arrangements are there. Feel free to email me with any questions at all.

When we nail down the Operator's Night for that workshop, I'll be back to post the info here.

  3. I bought my rig from Robert Starling, and when I got it he'd done a GREAT thing to the gimbal grip - he had wrapped it with tennis racket grip. At the bottom he taped it with electrical tape, careful not to stretch the tape (if it stretches, it comes off eventually). I LOVE the feel of it, and with my thinner Steadicam post, it makes the handle a bit beefier and easier to hold. For details, I'd go to the source - Robert. But I can attest, I never have grip problems with the mod he did.

    How's your groundstroke now?

  4. Hi folks,

What boxes are being used if one wants to take the RGB output of the CineAlta and convert it to HD/SDI for viewing on a non-Steadicam external monitor? I've been Googling and come up emptyhanded. From what I see the Aja box doesn't do this.

    Whose magic box does?

Thanks in advance for the info,

  10. Hi folks,

My kids Pediatrician is moving to L.A. and wants to live on the west side of things. He's been out once or twice and is dismayed at what he's finding so far. He's single, and is looking for a pediatrics practice to hook up with.

I'm here asking if anyone has, or knows of an apartment either in the West Hollywood area or over near the beaches. Email me if you've got a lead or a friend with a lead. While I don't know this guy as a good friend, I've trusted the health and safety of my children in his hands for an awful lotta years.

In an effort to keep Tim's servers happy, let's email directly please. My info is: peter@thesteadicamworkshops.com

  11. This article caught my eye. Apparently the folks at Corning glass have solved the problem of signal loss due to curvature of glass fibers.

I know the Copperhead does fairly well when the cable is bent but other systems might not fare similarly. If this new fiber design becomes the standard, users like us might be in the position of being able to tuck the cables in and around things as we used to with very thin Coax, without fear or snapping the glass or signal strength loss.

    Interesting stuff.

  14. The Steadicam Operator whose work we admire quite frequently is Jeff Zachary. He's been doing hand-held and Steadicam on Monday Night Football ( and Sunday afternoon, I believe.... ) for quite a few years. His work is simply superb and he trains every single day for the endurance test that is a game day.

I worked before and after him twice. Once at the 1995 Super Bowl and again at the 2000 Super Bowl. I did pre game and Halftime with the rig, he did the game.

I worked. He HAULED ASS. Hat's off to you Jeff, always great framing, great instincts, great operating.
