  2. Yep. Back in the day I shot a lot of hip-hop music videos.

    Notorious B.I.G., Mary Blige, etc.

    My agent called me with an offer for a great rate for 3 days of work, 12 hour days + OT ( usually they tried to get you on a flat promising no more than 14 hours, then would run 24 + ).

    I told him no thank you. He was stunned. It was looking to be a $ 10K paycheck.

    It was for Wu Tang Clan. A few weeks before this event, they'd been shooting another music video and one of their "posse" had opened up with live gunfire INSIDE of the Winnebago in Brooklyn. They all scattered, cops were called, nobody saw a thing of course... ( I got this from the 2nd A.C. on that shoot )

    I used to shoot some fascinating gigs and always had a clear danger sense about me. This one? Fuck their money, I do NOT go to play with people who shoot guns off randomly not caring who might be hurt or killed.

    Glad to have been unemployed that weekend. :)

  5. Good afternoon,

    I am announcing the new production run of the Zalex Longplate. The first run of 60 plates is now in use from Tokyo to Turkey, from Cape Town to California.

    This dovetail plate is designed to lock into all of the popular stages for stabilizers:

    * Tiffen Large Stage.
    * PRO.
    * XCS.
    * Sachtler.
    * Betz.

    -- And any other stage made that accepts plates made for these rigs.

    Features:

    º 18" / 45.72 cm long.

    º Extra thick 6061 aluminum plate guarantees no vibration.

    º Comes with both socket head safety catch screws for Tiffen / Betz stage AND slots for safety lock design used on PRO/ XCS design.

    º Comes with custom machined hardware allowing machine screws sized both 3/8-16 and 1/4-20 to be used for mounting items.

    º Comes with new accessory kit to allow use of the Longplate mounted directly against the bottom of Arri Alexa, Amira ( with shoulder mount ) and Sony broadcast camera bottom designs. This eliminates any other mounting plate. Eliminates weight, added height and potential for vibration.

    º There is a "Tiffen/ Betz" end of the plate that has mounting holes for the new Tiffen follow focus bracket system designed by Jerry Holway. There is blank metal at that end for use in drilling mounting holes for any other follow focus rod mount brackets in use.

    º The " PRO/ XCS/ Sachtler " end has a generous blank area so that any hole pattern may be made for any other follow focus rod mount brackets in use.

    º Price for Longplate + accessories at $ 300.00 USD. PayPal is the only payment method accepted. Shipping is free to the lower 48 United States. Shipping Internationally including Canada is calculated by destination. Shipping costs are NEVER marked up.

    To place an order do not reply here. Please contact me directly at: peter@steadicamproductionservices.com or send a PM to me.

    None of the photos used on the Zalex Accessories page are staged. All Longplate shots are of the plate in use on set.

  6. Hey all who can see this- A last minute celebration of the visit of a colleague of ours.

    Egyptian Steadicam Operator and Cinematographer Islam Abdelsamie is in New York City till the weekend. Let's give him a great NYC welcome and meet up for beers and food.

    Tonight- 6:00 pm for a few hours. Jimmy's Corner. 140 West 44th Street, between 6 and 7 ave. South side of the street.

    Pass the word, come if you can !

    Best to all,

    Peter Abraham, S.O.C.

  7. Hey Grant- Congrats !! Indeed, the descriptions are true. Older Gen 1 Flyer had a fixed length post. Newer Flyer LE rigs are A) All black. Vest, arm and sled. B) Telescoping post. C) Different battery mount than the old ones.

    I'm rediculously familiar with all of the generations of Flyer. I helped to design each of them in small ways and for a few years sold a ton of them as well. ( Steadicam Operator for 29 years, 5 years as Workshops Director and Salesperson for Tiffen Steadicam )

    Feel free to email me with any questions at all ! Tons of little mods, things to look out for, ways to silences the squeaking, etc etc. Glad to help you !

    Best,

    Peter Abraham, S.O.C.

  8. Moving to some new cases and I have these two for sale. Both have no cracks and handles, wheels, gaskets and padlock hasps are intact. Glad to hand it off to a NYC area customer. Otherwise, UPS Ground shipping is added to the sale price.

    The Pelican Storm iM3100 has more surface scratches but both are in great shape.

    Both come with no foam. Best anyway, since everyone has a different way of nesting and there are many options for foaming a case.

    Here's the details on the first one- a Pelican Storm iM3100 case. Link to B&H Photo page provides details and list price- $ 173.55. My price on this is $ 145.00.

  9. I'm in need of access to one for a few hours. Nothing fancy, just need to modify some parts.

    Anyone in the city have a drill press I can visit? I'll speak to it respectfully and will clean up the swarf I create. I love that word. Swarf. It sounds so.....other-worldly.

    Answer here or PM me?

    Many thanks, and to those living state-side, Happy 4th of July !!!

  10. We are better than this.

    We are better than the narcissistic cloistered mind that produced the remarks that have stung us.

    We are better than the snark.

    We are better than the base recommendations of physical abuse.

    In fact, we are so much better than the sadly narrow minded person whose words have wounded us that the very best thing we can do is go out every day and earn the true and positive respect of the people who have hired us.

    We are gifted to be in the position to bring our entire creative force to bear in every scene, to every line of dialogue, at every location and in every set-up.

    We are given the honor of elevating the moment, of making the viewer hold their breath, of picking the proper pace, frame and movement through space.

    If we're as good as our word, then we are both artisans and craftspeople.

    We are better than this.

    Somos mejores que esto.

    Nous sommes mieux que cela.

    ونحن أفضل من هذا.

    Wir sind besser als dieser.

    Είμαστε καλύτερα από αυτό.

    Siamo meglio di questo.

    我々 はこれよりも優れています。

    Vi er bedre end dette.

    אנחנו יותר טובים מזו

    我们比这更好的

    Ons is beter as dit.

    Wij zijn beter dan deze .

    हम इस से बेहतर हैं।

    Við erum betri en þetta.

    Estamos melhor do que este
    Мы лучше , чем это.

    Biz bu daha iyidir .

    Yr ydym yn well na hyn.

    우리는이 보다 더 낫다.

    We are better than this.

  11. Here's a possible answer.

    I use a Beefy Baby Stand. I also got some studio wheels, and they are not specifically made for my stand. All well and good. But sometimes, depending on the spread of the legs when the stand has been opened and wheels locked into place, the wheels vibrate VERY violently as the rig is rolled along. Upon examination, I see that the wheel caster is not quite vertical and as the wheels are turning, they are not able to roll and adjust as the stand is moved along with a perfectly smooth rotation. Hence the vibration. Of course, it must be all three wheels since they are all locked onto the legs of my stand.

    One game wheel might not be an issue, but three wheels vibrating rapidly is something I can easily feel- and I'm only moving my docking stand 30 feet or less.

    Perhaps the objectionable problems last season were the result of this kind of asymmetrical force on the wheels creating rapid vibrations. See if one of the A.C.'s was on last year and remembers this artifact. They would have been pushing the rig daily, they'd remember if the wheels turned very smoothly or were problematic.

    Oh, and I use the hard wheels. 8" pneumatic? Hell, even if they are not seated well, I'd be thinking that the vibrations would be minimized by the air in the tires. But as a global possible solution, check to see how the wheels are in terms of smooth operation.

    Best to all,

    Peter Abraham, S.O.C.

  12. Lesli and I watched an Academy screener at home. Chris' work- as always- is sublime in its framing choices and skill set. Humbling, more than humbling but in no way depressing.

    It is worth noting that there are some articles out there, including a superb interview that Chris gave. Here's the link to his interview. The intense depths of physical rehearsal and camera choreography are a wonder to me- who gets this level of prep? I am in NO WAY taking away from what we see on the screen. The interview- which I read prior to the screening- reminds me of stories Garrett tells of shooting The Shining. 20.....30...45 takes. Between the rehearsal period and time in NYC on set, Chris had the remarkable gift of intense repetition and insightful rehearsal. What a great position to be in ! What a gift from Production- that the Director and DP understood the demans and creative possibilities of doing this on Steadicam and wanted to commit such a level of time and energy and money.

    I want to watch it again, and then again in about 6 months. Because this level of artistry is to be revisted like a treasured novel.

  13. -Smile- It seems it is much wiser to agree with everything you are saying.

    The excuses provided reveal a lack of financing up front, a lack of software R&D and proof of concept during Prototype phase, and an appalling approach to dealing with customers and their significant investments.

    It's about professionalism, not price point. I sell small very useful items. I stand behind them. You sell a very very expensive item, and have a very well-connected-to-one-another community pretty torqued off at you.

    Ahhhh well. I wish you the very best of luck, and bow out of this unfortunate thread.
