  1. I took the workshop last year in PA. There was a student there that had an SK2 and had some years practicing with it. After the workshop I noticed he had put his profile up and said he had like 16 years of experience but he was neglecting to mention that 16 years was his total years of experience in the biz. He put his rate at $1500 a day for an operator with an SK2.

This kind of thing irritates me too because I'm a newbie and I am struggling to earn what is fair for my level of experience. But at least I know that if someone out there has 3 years experience and is saying they have 15 years...it will be so obvious to everybody (especially the producers who are hiring you) that your reel does not meet the standards of the veterans of 10 years and up. Even worse, the producer might even think that you do have 15 years of experience but you suck for someone who has been flying for 15 years. It just sounds like a lose lose situation for most of the guys that are doing this. I'm sure a few have been able to pull it off.

  2. I am, for all 1 of you who know who I am. =)

You can change that to 2 people who know you. We didn't talk much during the workshop but I know who are. I still have that pic of you balancing a sled on your head :)

I'm gonna try to make it. Hopefully I will get to meet the rest of you guys.

  3. Hello,

I Know that I'm a new member here and I only know so many of you from the SOA workshop but I just wanted to comment again on this BirdBoy user. Forget the other arguments about which rig is better, this guy is a real jerk. He acted like a total jerk in another post as well. Someone posted in the newbies section asking for tips before he went to a workshop. Birdboy just replied with "suckup". The original post was no where near sucking up. Regaurdless, Birdboy's response was very rude. I feel if people are intentionally disrespectful, then their user privileges should be taken away. This forum is supposed to help all of us whether we are veterans or newbies and this jerk is just instigating. I have such a hard time believing that a professional DP has such poor etiquette.

  4. Hey Rob,

Very nice reel. In the end....ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS and your reel proves that!

I was curious how you modded you masters series with a tilt stage? Was that you or did you send out?

    thanks

  5. Gordon,

if you need to upgrade your III arm, I´d go directly to Rig Engineering Australia. The gold springs are heavy duty but the Silver Springs support more weight and has a wider weight range. The work they do is excellent. Talk with Dean Merlo for details at: admin@steadyrig.com

Hey Nacho. Thanks for the tip. I have been seriously considering them and I have yet to hear anything bad about them. Unless someone convinces me not to, I will be getting a silver spring arm. Thanks.

as for the upgrades you've mentioned,

what's wrong with the standard 3a post? is the model you are looking at damaged? if not, why do you think you'd need the upgrade? as for 24 v, you can probably do without for the first while. if you're really at the beginner stage, it is unlikely you'd be getting out there on an arri 435,535, moviceam or panavision kit. sr3, just use onboards, hd use onboards and pretty much the rest you can get by on 12v. so maybe do without that expense for now.

look for 3a vest. they're pretty comfortable and can be had at a nice price.

go to a steel yard or some factory that deals with large chunks. have them cut you a small piece (15lbs or so) then go to a friend with a drill and tap some threads in her. may cost you 10 bucks and a couple hours.

depending on the market you'll be working, you may/may not need the expense of a remote follow focus unit. bartech engineering is the place to get sorted in that area.

and remember, the upgrades never end. decide what you absolutely need. make a priority list and go from there.

    cheers

    Hey Matt,

Thanks for the reply. The rig I am looking at is working. The post is in good condition. The only problem is that it is non-telescoping. Not the biggest deal for me right now...I just want to practice, but eventually,it will be an upgrade...not the first upgrade though. I first plan on fixing the vest. It needs new velcrow and I want to replace the straps with something that is similar to the ultra straps. I heard you can buy them for $25. My next upgrade will be the arm. I'm not sure how i should prioritize the rest of the upgrades i want. I guess I'll have to figure it out once I begin my journey. thanks again for the help Matt.

  6. Hello,

My name is Gordon Liron. I took the workshop last may in Exton (Hello to all from that class). After the workshop, I had to put steadicam on hold because I had some health problems and had to go in for surgery. To make things better, my bills were pretty high?even with insurance (HMO sons of bitches). I recovered quickly and I am still in good health today. I finally am in a position to get a rig and get back on track. I'm getting a Model 3A and it will need some major upgrades but it will let me get out there and practice without a big loan hanging over my head and I can always upgrade it as I get better and when hopefully getting paid right. I?m pretty excited to finally get a rig but I am still a bit unexperienced but I do know what the rig needs?.I just don?t where to get them. I was really looking to explore all my options before purchasing. Thanks guys.

This 3A will eventually need the following upgrades and I was wondering where i should go to get them.

    Upgrades:

Arm - I was planning on rig engineering (possibly silver springs or at least gold springs)

Vest - So far I have been told Peter Abraham is the man for that (peter is the man! hey peter!

electronics - I need to modify to 24v.

Practice cage - where can I get or buy?

Posts ? I have a standard 3A post. I heard the part is not so available.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everybody!

P.S. I was also wondering about who is good for financing?
