  1. Andrew,

You have to remove the little stud that carries the cable, it is difficult and requires heat and brute force but can be done. It is not a screw in it just presses in but a twisting action will help get it out. You could sacrifice the cable to get something through the hole in the top to act as a lever and then replace the cable.

The mystery screw goes through the gimbal handle on the Master and Ultra (1) to engage with the slot around the top of the arm post for low mode. Slightly disquieting as a fixture but if you think it through it is really safe.

Sending a couple of things by e-mail.

  2. Dear Exovest Owners,

Firstly a big thank you to all you early adopters of the Exovest, especially for your patience and support. Your feedback has driven important changes that we have integrated into the current design, and we’d now like to offer free upgrades to bring all vests up to that same standard.

If you received your Exovest during or after December 2013, and has the scooped-out finger grips on the D shaped portion of the waist over-centre lever, your vest is entirely up to date. If not, there may be some updates available for you.

Procedure will be one of the following:

1/ We ship you the upgrade package, including upgrade instructions. All relevant parts will be pre-assembled where possible, so the procedure should take you around an hour to complete, depending on how early your vest is.

2/ You ship it to the Steadicam factory in Burbank, California where we perform the upgrade and return the vest to you, we cover all shipping charges.

3/ You send it to one of our regional partners who will perform the upgrade and return the vest to you, again we pick up the cost of shipping.

Should you have a vest in need of an upgrade or just want to check whether you require one, please email Kristi Davis in Burbank at kdavis@tiffen.com or call her directly at 001-818-567-7910. Please have your serial number available and we will verify what needs to be done and explain the procedure.

  3. Hi Paul

Look at the cables and the pulley wheels, sometimes it is a spring but often the cables. Can be caused by misalignment where someone has tried to de-tune the arm, just make sure they look parallel.

  4. Greetings All

Tiffen International are hosting an open day with honoured guest Garrett Brown on Monday the 16th June. Also an opportunity to see the Steadicam range including a preview of the great new M-1 sled and some other gear only seen at NAB. We are hoping that Garrett will be able to present at least an abbreviated version of his great Moving Camera and of course he will be there to chat and answer questions.

There will be the whole range of other Tiffen products together and importantly a running buffet with drinks. We'd love to see you but we need a guest list for security so please RSVP at http://www.flysteadicam.com/tiffen-open-day/ .

Hope to see as many UK ops as possible and also anyone passing through the UK.

  6. Greetings all and some sad news.

Some of you may know UK operator John Ward, if not look him up on IMDB - Full Metal Jacket, Prince of Thieves, Highlander etc. I have known John since around 1986 although he was operating before this with the first Steadicam Model 1 that entered the UK.

Some of you may already be aware that John has been seriously ill for some time and things are unlikely to get better for him. In light of this he has asked me to see if anyone is interested in helping him clear his cellar where he has:

1 x Spintec 105mm spinning disc Rain Deflector. These are great devices, I used to sell them when I was at OpTex and they really work. Fits on matte box rails and needs 12 volts, not too much gyroscopic effect unlike the big 300 and 400mm versions. Was £2,500.00 (from memory) looking for £800.00 ono.

1 x Mk-V radio focus. Three channel with three motors (the blue ones) handset and receiver. This was one of only a few made but I believe that Marell Electronics would still be able to maintain it. Not bought from me but originally cost in the order £8,000.00 and would make a newbie operator a nice kit for around £2,500.00 complete.

Please note this is a private sale on John's behalf and the items will be sold as seen (I have not seen them yet so am unable to answer questions until after the UK Silver Workshop ending on the 5th December) but do contact me at my Tiffen e-mail robin.thwaites@tiffen.com. Again, this is not a Tiffen sale, just helping a friend.
