  1. There is one other route that you can take.

    • FULL RATE Plus an additional 10%, because you are assuming the risk and for your policy being the primary Equipment Coverage Only, along with a deposit of your deductible in the form of a cashiers check.
    • You will still require them to provide you with a General Liability Coverage being that there will be cables and other obstructions all around you the other crew members are responsible for beyond your control.
    • All Actors and extras working the shot, will need to provide YOU with a Hold Harmless Agreement and Indemnifying you from any loss. Its not like you can keep them from running into you and or causing harm to you and your equipment. (GL should cover this)
    • Lastly you will need to hire your guys at their rates to make sure you have qualified guys handling your equipment, seeing that your the one at risk of exposure.

  2. I ask myself.....What would Jerry do..?

Jerry would say... "If its not affecting your operating and your shots are solid. Who am I to tell you not to do so." (or something along those lines)

Flecther would say... "NO NO NO... Thats Wrong Wrong Wrong..."

Ture story durning my first NAB '09 as a Tiffen/Steadicam Demo Operator

    Will it introduce drag, possibly

If more than likely will if you have short stubby fingers. I'm 6'2", no stubbies anywhere on me... wink.gif

I also grew up playing the Double Bass, so I have a natural grip that allows for the separation of the index and middle fingers.

My Ultra 2 gimbal also has a nice top plate that allow my index finger to rest upon and not influence the the post nor gimbal rotation.

NOW... do I stil operate in this manner, I don't think so, but how knows what the hell my hands are doing on set... I'm focused on other things.

  3. Shawn,

Mike and Ryan are saying the same thing [drop time] and the advantage of this is that if you need to continue your shot in a regular operating way, you won't have to fight the rig. But the thing to consider is what makes you more comfortable operating the entire shot. Your thoughts on changing your fore/aft to git you the tilted position is one of the advantages my rig has with the motorized top stage. I can simple recall three different balance positions (i.e. kiltered/dutched, looking up or down and normal) all in one move, granted I can only choose one speed to set for each motor of the two motors.

But, like everyone said, do what gets the shot done!

  4. I was wondering if ops dock up at any point and take a rest out of the rig or do they just chuck it in the rest position when the play's at the other end? Is this a conversation you'd have the director/producer first, saying "if you see sky don't worry about it you'll have a shot when the ball comes back".

Early on, I learned the hard way that being strapped in and shooting nonstop for hours can wreck your back. Nowadays

I rest as much as possible, but sometimes that can be a challenge on a live show, so yes, talk to the director and explain that even small rest periods (on a stand ideally, but even in the resting position) can keep you from killing yourself. That said, I work for a director once or twice a year who even though I told him what I am doing, thinks I am offering a tilt from the sky when I am resting! LOL, it's always fun racing to get the rig of my shoulder before he comes to me.

Thats funny Chris... I just did a three day (8 - 30min shows) live to tape gig, 2 shows day one and 3 shows day two & three. When I zapped to the end of the lens, to check focus... I would here the director "and take steadicam!" So I'm screaming at the top of my lungs (inside my head voice) Noooooooooo and having to hold the shot... so just make sure that you have bad composition when you check focus! Now, when I would sneak over to the dock, I always went very wide and gave him a perspective that the other cameras didn't, still with good composition and I would here him take my docked rig a few times during the shows.

  5. As far as the "20%" that you were referring to, I don't know where that came from, but I highly don't think that is true. For all intents and purposes, a lithium ion battery will only self-discharge around 1% per month, so you would need to let it sit around for 18+ months to let it self-dishcarge 20%. Now if someone is telling you not to use the battery for more than 20%, then that is really out of the ballpark. How would you be able to really use your battery if you cannot use it more than 20%? The other best way to store the battery is on the charger.

I guess I used the wrong terminology... what I meant to say, is that I was told that it is bad to keep using your batteries below 20% of charge until completely drained.

  6. If you are leaving li ion batteries off of charge, then the best way to store them is to discharge them to approximately 40% of charge and let them sit that way. Don't ask me why the 40% number, it is just the number that the cell manufacturers give to us. There must be some scientific formula, with this 40% number, that helps to either prolong the self-discharge or deter it in some manner.

Does this still hold true? I was told to try and never let my Li Ion batts discharge more than 20% and to completely charge them before putting them alway... its a bit impractical for us to try and discharge our batts to 40% when we literally don't know when our next day will be. So what is the best way to handle this????

My original question upon finding this thread was to find the best solution on my battery rotation (especially in 24v or 12vParallel)? Should I use two older batteries together and two newer batts together or new and old at the same time?

  7. ....until you find out a Kuwaiti Dinar is worth nearly $4. This, after you withdrew 250 Dinar from the ATM for incidentals.

You could always go find "Friends" of Baldwin where your 4:1 is 4 times the fun!
