1. Ive worked in panama several times, and on one of those trips i stayed almost 20 days.

Regarding the Rusting issue: i did the same that i do in miami to keep my gear safe.

Regarding the humidity and the uncomfort of feeling misserable and soaking weet, theres nothing you can do. The wet Vandana helps though!

  2. I have used it on my Masters with the original coaxial mags and with the steadimags, either way i like it more than the Moviecam compact which is a heavy and complicated pig. The other day i flew it for the first time with my MK-V, And i loved it.post-286-1147479495_thumb.jpg

  3. Hi Matt

    For the record.

The Boland's we do are modified for us and have an extra power converter built in.

The standard 8.4" is for 12v only - most rigs with the new batteries can pump out 17+v

So a standard Boland which is designed for studio work etc. does have a problem with the excess power.

This is why we had them change it for us.

Well that was the first upgrade that tara at Bolland offered me when it blew the first time, and i went and got it. and 800 dollars and two weeks latter it blew in white smoke again. i got my Daybright Bolland LCD before i got the AR, from bolland in LA, and i have not beaing treated according to the amount of money that i paid for it.

Then i went to Noel"s at transvideo and his great customers service when i was there made me regret that i didnt got the transvideo from him.

i hope i can get it to work with out paying more money since it already cost me a small fortune in repairs in just 5 months.

AND THE REZON WHY I COMMENT ON THE MONITOR IS TRIGERED BY CHARLES PAPPERT"S COMMENT ON PEOPLE NOT WILLING TO COMPLAINT OR INFORM ON A RECENT OR BAD PURCHASE EXPERIENCES, AND THIS FAILURE HAPPENED TO BE ON TOP OF THE MY AR. EVEN THOUGH IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Are you OK? MR Efletcher. no need to amail anybody now. and everything on the size that you like. Why dont you remove the FONT, SIZE menus from the forum windows, that way this wont happen again, i thought they are there for a reazon. to make a text, any size or font type someone freely wants. Please accept my apologies

  4. Mines broke as well but i changed it to an aluminum one, same shape, same size, same design, annodized on black, but 300% more rigid and stronger. theplastic ones always seem to brake right were the 4 bolts go. this mod, made a world of difference, until i switched to my DSD, and then i never used the Master vest again.

  5. So far i never had any kind of vibrations when using the AR with any kind of the film cameras that i had to fly, a Moviecam SL, 435 sr3 sr2 and 235. regarding the fear of posting about any flows with the system, i never had a problem with the AR, so nothing to comment. i guess time will tell.

i did a job with the 535 on the NEXUS, without the AR of cource, and the sled behaved beautifully, since i had to move at a very very fast pace from a kitchen to a living room to a beadroom and finished on a bathroom on a lock off on the main mirror.

I was not blown away by the panasonic monitor either, so i switched the BOLLAND 8" from my master to the nexus. THIS MONITOR (WHEN IT WORKED,)WAS GREAT UNDER ANY KIND OF LIGHTING CONDITIONS EVEN AT THE BEACH IT BEHAVES AS GOOD AS A GREEN SCREEN. AND AS LONGEST IT DOESNT BURN IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SHOT.

I HAVE TO MAKE THIS CLEAR!

THE BOLLAND IS NOT A MONITOR YOU CAN RELLY ON.

MINE HAS BLOWN SEVERAL TIMES, AND SINCE THE BOLLAND COMPANY SAID THAT GUARANTY IS NOT COVERING THIS,

I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR $560.00 US, 3 TIMES ALREADY. THEY SENT IT TO ME THE LAST TIME AND IT BLEW UP ON THE FIRST MINUTE, I SENT IT BACK TO THEM ALMOUST 3 WEEKS AGO, AND THEY WANT TO BILL ME THE SAME AMOUNT AGAIN. SO I CAME TO THE POINT THAT I DONT WANT IT BACK. THEY CAN KEEP THAT PIECE OF CRAP AT BOLLAND. SINCE IT DOESNT WORK AT ALL.

GUS( LOVING THE AR, HATING THE BOLLAND) PENNA

  6. Ive got mine 3 months ago and worked with it, on a 7week feature, and around 8commercials and 4 music videos. never had a single problem. however it takes me some extra time to set it up, also i need to keep an extra eye on those cables that cut get tangled.

The workmanship and the quality of the MK-V package its oustanding. the gimbal is simply the best in the market. The customer service has being so far so good, i just ordered a couple of extra cables and an extra dovetail and it was here on the east coast the next morning.

HOWEVER! I DO HAVE A BIG, BIG , COMPLAINT REGARDING THE BOLLAND MONITOR THAT I PURCHASED TO USE WITH MY MS FILM AND MY AR.

IT HAS BURNED ON 4 DIFFERENT TIMES. WITH OUT ANY REAZON. IT JUST STARTS SMOKING, THEN THE BURNED SMELL COMES OUT. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NEXUS A.R. SINCE IT DID THE SAME ON TOP OF THE MASTER FILM.

DONT BUY A BOLLAND MONITOR. YOULL WASTE YOUR MONEY.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST. THE BATTERIES.

THE PAG L95 AND LOCK-ON 20. BATTERIES THAT I PURCHASED FOR MY AR ARE SIMPLE THE BEST BATTERIES I HAVE EVER USED.

THEY KEEP GOING AND GOING AND GOING. MY AVERAGE BATTERIE USE ON A FULL SHOOT DAY IS OF 4 BATTERIES. I DONT THING IM GOING TO USE THE 9 BATTERIES I GOT.

REGARDING RATES IM CHARGING A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE THAN I USED TO GET FOR MY OTHER GEAR. NOW THAT I GOT SOME DPS AND DIRECTORS ADDICTED TO THE AR, IM GOING TO RAISE AN ADDITIONAL COUPLE HUNDRED MORE. THE UPPER SIDE OF HAVING THIS NEW SYSTEM IS THAT IM WORKING A LOT MORE THAN I WAS WITH MY PREVIOUS MASTER SERIES STEADICAM THEREFORE ITS MORE MONEY IN GENERAL..

THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE A.R. SO FAR.

  7. Is the U2's compacted post length longer than the original Ultra or Master? It looks a bit long in the pictures I've seen. In that Tiffen group shot the bottom of the sled is almost hitting the ground. Just curious whether they had to lengthen the post due to a decrease in sled weight.

Remember that the arm they are using booms a little more than yours. to that you must add that the U2s lower sled is lighter than your masters lower sled. Now imagine if in order to counterbalance a moviecam sl which is very light camera, you have to extend your post. imagine if you have a hevier camera, you would need to extend the post even further making your sled so long that it will touch the floor before your arm reaches the lowest part of its boom range.

That was the felling i had when i looked at it. and that is what happens on my ALIEN REV. when i have it set up with a heavy camera. because the Nexus sled is way lighter than a master or an ultra.

so to answer your question when the U2 is fully compacted which is only enough to counter balance for a very very light camera, lets say an XL1 its the same length as your masters.

  8. I HAD THE SAME THING DONE TO MY HARNES EVEN BEFORE I PURCHASED IT, BECAUSE I DESIGNED IT BACK IN 1997 FOR MY OLDER FRONT MOUNTED VEST. IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE ONE WALTER K. DID FOR YOU.

FOR THE TELEX I ALWAYS WORE IT ON ME SO I COULD WALK AWAY WHERE EVER I WANTED AND NOT DISAPPEARED FROM THE DIRECTOR. NOWDAYS IM GLAD THOSE MULTYCAMERA JOBS ARE JUST A BAD MEMORY.

  10. it took STEADICAM (TIFFEN ) 15 years to realize that the "PRO MK-V" modular design is the way to go. they even copied the shelf that holds the accesories. but still is no mach for the MK-V nor the PRO.

  11. hello All

I have an Ultra kit, Unfortunately a few months back my 5" green screen 24 volt monitor got smashed in transit, it is written off.

I have managed to source a used one to replace it. It is a 12volt model taken form a 12 volt Ultra rig.

It looks in very good condition cosmetically.

One strange thing is happening though.

The monitor powers up and seems to work absolutley fine.

However when the battery runs low and starts to flash the monitor and camera go blank as normal.

After about 20 or so seconds though the monitor fires back up and has a block of light about 20% square in the midddle and then this collapses to a thin intense vertical line which shortly afterwards collapse again to an intense spot in the middle of the screen.

This has already done some damage. There is a small irregular black spot burnt on the tube face. Not too disastrous and I can live with it.

Has anyone seen this problem before and is there anything I can do to stop it happening ?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for this monitor I could see please

    Cheers

    Joe McNally

WOW THAT SOUNDS LIKE A POLTERGEIST.....................

  12. I've heard horror stories of ops getting paralized like injuries because they've been sitting with the rig on, boats, cars etc. Someone gave me a tip that one should slide the vest as far up you can when you're sitting, so you don't put pressure onto your nerves at your hip. Is this a good tip? Anyone else have good ideas of how to avoid injuries due to this?

I NEVER heard about the horror stories regarding vest s digging in the nerves and paralysing them.

Just dont sit with the vest at the same length that you would use it, if you were standing up.

The only horror stories that i know about steadicam are :

  13. Thanks Brad and Jerry for the input... Today I started experimenting with the vel-loc, or something like that, its the mushroom cap hard plastic (same on both sides) stuff. I put my two receivers together with that stuff and I actually cant get them apart, so Its prett stable between them, and yes, I will then attach it the same way I have been already with the velcro, and secure it with some sort of similar strapping device. I'll finish that later, I am actually pretty pleased now, but surprised that there isnt already something a little more standardized. Hmmm.

    thanks again,

    THAT VEL-LOCK IS THE BOMB!

I CANT LIVE WITH OUT IT.

THE OTHER DAY I LEFT TO DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND WHEN I OPEN MY CASES TO PREP THE CAMERA FOR THAT JOB I REALIZED THAT THE CAMERA ASSISTANT FROM THE LAST JOB THE NIGHT BEFORE IN MIAMI, HAD NOT PUT MY DOVETAIL PLATES IN WITH ALL MY GEAR. THIS ONLY HAPPENED CAUSE I WAS DISCUSING WITH A BRITISH PRODUCER THAT HAD AGREED TO PAY ME THAT SAME NIGHT, AND HE WAS TELLING ME THAT HE WOULD MAIL A CHECK FROM ENGLAND,WICH WAS NOT THE DEAL WE HAD.

SO I COMPLETELY MISS THE USUAL INVENTORY THAT I DO ON EACH WRAP.

AND THERE I WAS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WITH A COMPLETE 435, A "COMPLETE" STEADICAM RIG AND TO MY SURPRISE. NO DOVETAIL PLATES.

GUESS WHAT.... I DID THE ENTIRE JOB WITH THE 435 VELCROED WITH VEL-LOCK TO MY MASTERS STAGE. NO LOW-MODE THOUGH, BUT I TRIED IT UPSIDE DOWN.( WITH THE AC.S HANDS UNDERNEATH) JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, AND THE CAMERA HELD JUST FINE. BY THE WAY THE ONLY WAY OF REMOVING THE CAMERA FROM THE STAGE WAS WITH THE ONLY TOOL I DIDNT USE THAT DAY. THE BIG FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER.

  15. I have to second Larry on all his points. i got this camera package from CSC that came with the canatrans camera A(steadicam) had my moduluz, and camera B the Canatrans after one day of watching the 400% + better image cuality signal coming from camera B, we switched the canatrans to my steadicam. and never went back on the rest of the 2 weeks after that. the only thing that turns me off is the price tag, mostly becuse production hardly pays for video transmiters arond this city. but if your concern is customer service Lentequip has saved my Butt in many shoots from south america to korea emery always saved me.

I did not want to post anything about the Canatrans until I had some experience with it.  I am thrilled by its performance.  There were several issues I had with the Modulus:  Interference with other things on my sled, including video assist camera, remote stage, even the focus system.  I found a particular way to run the power cable and place the transmitter antenna to make everything happy - this with my own more carefully shielded power cable as there is a lot of RF coming out of it.  The Canatrans is perfectly clean in this regard, so no more worries about interference.  It also only transmits on the intended frequency instead of generating several harmonics like the Modulus does, sometimes causing poor reception when using scanning receivers and finding what looks like the primary signal.

I am especially happy with the variable video gain menu for the transmitted signal.  In the past I would set the video iris and gain for the best image on my monitor only to have video assist ask for "more iris please".  This would satisfy the people watching the video but compromise the operating video!  With the Canatrans I just change the output gain and leave my settings alone.

The amount of power output is very important, and I now routinely set for 1/8 to 1/4 W for small interiors and 1W when outside.  I tell the video assist operator that I can change this if needed.  So far all of them like the Canatrans signal better than the Modulus.

I was concerned about the reduced number of frequencies available, but to date I have always found a good channel.  The only time I had trouble with the signal, a change to another channel resulted in dramatically better performance even though there did not appear to be a broadcast signal on the original channel.  It pays to do a quick range test in each location to get maximum performance.

I have been assured by Emery that service is a very high priority and he will turn around repairs in as little as 24 hours.  I cannot comment on this as I have had no problems so far, but this promises to be far better than Modulus repairs which routinely take 3 months or so.  I have rarely gone more than a year without repairs being needed on the Modulus 3000 so I am hoping the Canatrans will change this routine.

The Canatrans is much more expensive, much bigger and much heavier than the Modulus, so although I sold one of my Modulus 3000's I kept the 2nd.  I use it as a backup and on my video finder (Telefinder) and on conventional cameras - it is certainly easier to mount the Modulus than the Canatrans.  I am very happy with both for different reasons, but for the very demanding situations with my Steadicam I am definitely sold on the Canatrans.

I have seen a couple of Wifi systems and the signal was unbelievably good without any glitches, although when there is a problem the image either freezes or goes away completely.  It is all or nothing.  Still this is a very intriguing new technology that may prove to solve most of the problems we have with a moving camera.  However, both systems had considerable delay, 1/4 second to 1/2 second, rendering them unusable.  We often depend upon the real time nature of video assist both to hear synced audio and to react to the camera or actors' actions for focus, lighting cues, etc.  We have evolved TV broadcast usage to the point that many members of the crew use their own receivers to do their job.  With a Wifi system a TV transmitter would need to be part of the base station to supply all of them with a signal.  Still, if a realtime Wifi system comes around I would be very, very interested, but until then I have the best performance so far with the Canatrans.

  16. osvaldo!

i really doubt the ins comp is going to pay a dime on your case, i dont know if you are aware about my old ex master, it got totalled along with the 435 from camera group when a grip push them from a mezanine down six steps, the Ac tried to catch it but the rig draged him down. after 5 months of time wasting aileen( the CEO from cam group) and i came to the conclusion that we had to cover this with our own money. so i had to claim my ins comp and got a new rig. the prod comp ins comp said that this was not going to be covered by them last week. i would have lost five months of work if i didnt own another rig, i was lucky to have the ultra at home that fatal day.
