Here is some information about a workshop in Chile.

    Chile Workshop

You might want to contact Aldo, he might be able to help you out.

    Aldo Aste Sambuceti (aldoaste@vtr.net)

Avda. Libertad Nro. 1405, Of. Nro. 1303

Torre Coraceros, Vina del Mar, Chile

He might be able to help you out with an Instructor near by. Just a thought.

  2. Maybe you missunderstood me Jay,  off course if the director wants a flat horizon, it should be painlessly delivered. The ability to keep a horizon flat is so elementary to steadicam it should be taken for absolute granted.

I have been in situations however when delivering a flat horizon on the first couple of takes has not gotten me the smile from the director I like. He has come out with some garble (as they do) and ive taken a much more unconstrained approach, without keeping horizons, letting them subtly rotate over freely (smoothly, without that corrected look) with the dynamic of the shot and this has gotten me the smile I desire. Admitadly this is subtle rather than overt scenary horizons, but nevertheless.

All I can say really is I like to practise my handheld as well in real shoot situations and remember that a steadicam is not just a dolly, it can do much much more not just in movement.

And its an art! If you prefer it to look one way offer it up and forget the rules of good and bad steadicam...... but master good steadicam first, I feel I will always be learning. And sure I might be wrong now and completely disagree with myself in a few years.

What I hate the most, absolutely hate is when they "go dutch" on regular television. Anything over 20 degrees, anything with no shot dynamic to "explain it" , anything where they hold the camera at an angle just to "add funky ness" to the shot.... I hate it! But hey, maybe if I had been working for mtv in the mid eighties and had been part of that culture, I would have been dutch boy! and loved it.....

Why is it called "going dutch" anyway?

Thomas I am sorry that was not directed to you at all. It was in response to Leigh. Please don't think I meant it for you, sorry for the confusion.

    Hi thomas,

My understanding is if the operator want it to be flat horizon, then the result should be flat horizon. If operator want it slight loss of horizons, then end result should be slight loss of horizons. For beginer, most likely the operator will want to get flat horizons, but the end result video footage is not flat horizons.

What you said is one step further once reach the control of rig at will. ;-)

    Regards

    Leigh

If the DIRECTOR wants a flat horizon then the operator better GIVE the director a flat horizon!

  4. The AR certainly looks impressive. From looking at that footage, it looks like a lightweight rig to operate, as mentioned it is a small sized video camera being used with an LCD monitor. Will be useful for the new breed of lightweight HD cameras as also mentioned in this thread. The most important feature of the AR is the breaking down of low mode and regular operating, opening up new possibilities of different shots and sequences (and saving more time when shooting and setting up for the shot)

I don't think it is a light rig. I have yet to wear it but I have seen it personally and have talked to the op. He was flying a 35mm film camera and it was not light at all.

  5. hey jay , hey rob

is ULTIMATTE the company that designed the virtual studio or are they just

installing it for you ? it would be interesting for my topic to find out more about it. could you give me a link.

the way you described the system (infrared leds/cameras) sounds like the sytem from THOMA    www.thoma.de

plazamedia in germany has one installed, too

    www.plazamedia.de

you can find a picture of guido lux using it on a steadicam on their webpage.

if ultimatte is a different system please let me know.all input would be great!

all the best from sunny germany

Ultimatte I believe wrote the program software and they are also installing it at our studios.

  6. Some years ago I operated in a virtual studio where the camera´s were equipped with a kind of "antlers", a collection of rods with balls at the end (emitting infrared light) on top of every camera.

The studio ceiling had several infrared camera´s and they were used to track the antlers in 3D, after which the computers put real-time background behind the actors.

We could handhold the camera´s and also put it on a mini-jib without problem, so a Steadicam should be possible too.

But it is possible that this system is already obsolete now.

Could it be from Ultimatte? I know the guys were using that system too.

    Rob,

We are in the process of having Ultimatte install a "Virtual Set" in our studio. We have 3 studio build ups, 1 jib and 1 handheld/steadi. We have yet to put it on the air with all that, but I have built our rig with the crazy antler ball and all those wires. I hated every minute of it!!!!! On a ProVid none the less. I will be interested to see how that goes when we finally get on the air with it. At least now we have a Vector to put it on.

How did you like your Ultimatte experience??

  8. Alec,

I couldn't agree with you more!!!! I use a 20 year old IIIA, great from vest to stage. (it has had a few stage upgrades) The facility I work for has a ProVid and a new Master series type, the Vector. The Vector is just as good as the IIIA, technology obviously is better, the arm is sweet, and the vest upgrades Tiffen has done, I love. The ProVid, what can I say. I hate it. I didn't feel right raining on the ProVid parade earlier, but comparatively it's no match to the 3 or the Vector. If you haven't experienced the vest upgrades Tiffen has done on the Masters, they are great. I can't compare them to the back mounted models. They have these new "cross back straps" that really really help. The new breast plate that comes up higher and remains stiffer also is a tremendious help too. Sorry, don't want to get yelled at about praises one thing or another. :P I hope to get the ProVid upgraded as we use Steadicam a ton so we need two. So Thomas if you could pass on Brian's contact info, either here or as email, I would appreciate it.

  9. Gentlemen,

My company has had some problems with it's ProVid arms as well. We have actually snapped the cables, more than once. The metal at the trunion (sp?) has also snapped. We upgraded the socket block attachment to a masters type. I have heard that, that upgrade causes more torque. Do either of you have this upgrade or have you heard of this happening? Obvisously we have had this fixed but I will try to find the old pics of this, hopefully still have them. Thomas does your friend, Brian, do these upgrades to arms in the US? This will not sound right but, good to hear that others have had problems with their arms, thought we might have a defective one!

  10. AGAIN...You really need to take a workshop if you are going to seriously consider being an operator. You are learning bad habits, which in turn make you a bad operator. I have looked at most of you videos, ALL of your posts and read all the replies. WORKSHOP! Sorry about the tone, but what are you looking for here. The feedback you have gotten has all said the samething I'm telling you now, and not much has changed with your operating. It's time to commit to a workshop.

  11. The SOA owns a India Mount, which can be made available for rental. The best way to use this mount would be on a pick up truck with the tailgate removed. It is an awesome way to shoot. When done right it is not that dangerous at all. The seat may get a little uncomfortable for a long ride but it is really great. Contact me at jkilroy@steadicam-ops.com. We can discuss rates. Or call me at 215-919-4636.

  12. Dale,

How are you, nice to see you posting. With that outfit you have on it looks like you may be starring in that film. Give us a little background info. By the way get in touch with Frank Rush. We are getting our new Vector, so we should try to work out that trade you wanted with the "easy rig". Hope you are well. Keep in touch.

    Cheers Mate,

    Jay

  13. Although I am bias, I'll throw this out there anyway. The SOA workshop in Pennsylvania is a great workshop. I will not toot our horn too loud here, but I am sure others will agree. Please feel free to read all about our workshop on our web page SOA. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Especially here where others who have been to the SOA workshop can help answer. Good luck with your decision, with all the good choices I am sure it's not easy.
