  6. Hi All,

This is no sales pitch just one man's opinion thought I'd give something back after reading so much useful information on the forum for so long hope mine is useful to someone out there in the steadicam community. I splashed out and bought the Universal Custom Focus/Zoom G-Zoom not knowing anything about it. You can order it online selecting one of four different versions of the G-Zoom to suit your needs. You also select your gimbal size when ordering so it fits on your rig. You then also select your desired cable for Fuji or Canon Lenses whether it's Zoom, Focus or both all which are an extra cost. Once the order was placed Erik who makes the G-Zoom get's in touch to make sure it's all correct and soon enough my G-Zoom arrived in a small pelican for protection, time to test the unit.

Looking at the G-zoom it's made and feels robust and putting the G-zoom on the gimbal is easy, it fits nice and snug and has enough grip so it doesn't rotate on you when pressure is applied. The unit i bought has both zoom and focus. The zoom speed can be adjusted and the rocker is very smooth so very happy there. It also has a start stop button. The Focus knob is on the bottom of the unit so using your index finger on the unit makes it very comfortable, it is after all made for steadicam operators in mind by a steadicam operator. To be totally honest I initially had a small problem with the focus knob which made focus very twitchy unlike the smooth action on the zoom but to Erik's testament he replaced it which goes to show the support is there if something goes wrong.

There is also a BFD edition which you can supposedly plug and play with your BFD for Zoom or Focus. Is there any one out there with one of these? I have a Preston HU3 and prefer an assist to do focus but for TV or concerts the G-Zoom is a must have in your steadicam kit. The G-Zoom ranges from $859- $899 for the different editions and the Zoom Focus adaptor cables are $99 each which is pretty good value for money.

    Happy flying,

    Pete Barta
