  1. Hi

should a practise rig be similar to the type you eventually want to use, or are the principles the same with a lightweight rig and a heavy rig ? I have the possibility to buy a Steadicam Flyer (the original one) and I would really like to have my own rig to practise on but don't want to outlay a fortune until I am sure its for me.

  2. Hi

sorry to see my trusty, ultra reliable Preston Hand Unit 2 go but its now orphaned as I am buying an HU3. Last overhauled by Preston in May 2012 and has worked flawlessly since. Action is very smooth, just the right amount of friction. I am selling all the parts separately but first refusal and a 10% discount on all the accessories goes to whoever buys the handset.

All items are in London and can be inspected/tested.

Hand Unit, bought new in 2005

It has never been dry hired and has been very well looked after, always stored dry, never dropped.

    £850

The hand unit will be posted via Fedex. You will be responsible for any duty it may incur. I will not ship anything until the funds are in my account. You have 7 days to test the hand unit, charger, the board, and batteries, if you are unhappy, you may return them to me, via Fedex, at your own expense, for a full refund, less shipping charges.

Other items are as seen and will be posted.

  3. My 2 cents:

Having owned both BFD and Preston I concur that both are rock solid and reliable solutions. I think the BFD and the Preston should both be powered from an adapter bracket between the battery and the camera body if they are not being powered from the sled. In the UK this is a "V-Lock Pag adapter" and supplies 12V power direct from the battery via a 2-pin pag socket. However it depends on the battery system supplied with your camera. But this gives a few more Amps than the PAG socket near the handle on Sony cameras. (The Obie light socket). Id also suggest mounting the FF Receiver/Driver towards the back of the camera, as they are generally front-heavy. Also you will probably want to get hold of the Canon pitch gear (0.5) for your motors unless they are cine style when regular pitch (0.8/32P) will do

    good luck

  4. I have an FI+Z with the thick moulded rubber handgrip. Is there a bracket which will allow you to mount the digital microforce on the side of the unit while keeping the handgrip on ? I understand the original bracket is too short ? If someone sells them, please point me in the direction !

heres the picture from Jerry Hll's website - not terribly useful as you cant actually see the grip, but you know the grip I mean...

  5. Hi Rory,

If you're just looking to mount a lens motor you could buy one of Jerry Hills 2 N 1 (Lollipop) motor mounts www.steadimoves.com

This mounts to the rosette on the arri plate and will very securely hold a motor in place. Its a great little bracket that has saved my ass countless times.

Unfortunately we are using the Canon ENG lenses which have the servo unit on the right (NY) side, same as the rosette. I need to mount the motor on the "operator" side.
