  1. Hi all,

I've been wanting to buy the cam-jam monitor yoke to use with my Cinetronic for a while, and I was interested in his Quattro arm as well, but I told Matthias that I was using the CDL monitor bracket from Cinetronic for its arm, he told me he had designed a bracket to mount the CDL on his arm as well so I went for the whole arm + yoke.

I just wanted to share some photos for any of you that might be interested. The arm is great, as many of you already know, and the bracket for the CDL is just very simple and efficient, it keeps the CDL close to post and to the monitor, if you were to adjust the monitor position up or down the post, so you can always use a nice and short cable for the CDL. And you can adjust the arm rods without having to adjust the CDL position unlike the arm bracket from Cinetronic (which mounts through the holes in the arm rods).

The silver color is just because I wasn't patient enough to wait for the black anodized version.

Very happy with the whole set up, of course with Cinetronic's monitor and CDL as well!! The monitor's visibility under any weather circumstances keeps impressing the Ac's and dop's in every job (I've got used to it...). It wasn't until I used the Cinetronic in one of those difficult and technically demanding jobs that I fully understood how much better your operating can be when you have a clear vision of your frame at all times. Which doesn't mean that the operating is actually good, of course...

  2. Few weeks ago I worked with a french operator, with Pro Arm/Vest, and he had the wrench in the spar. He had a magnet on the wrench. I can't say if he thought it was fashion, he did use it quite a few times during the shoot, and obviously he had use it MANY times during his career, because he had an amazing technique to through the wrench from a distance and make it land perfectly aligned with the spar, even while walking back to first position.

Fashion or not, that was pretty cool! ;) I couldn't help laughing everytime I saw him doing that. And for the record, one of the top 3 operators I've seen. Amazing technique, and an overwhelming presence on set.

    Cheers

  3. Hi everyone,

I recently bought the new Cmotion Compact. I haven't seen much information here or in the web in general, except from Cmotions's web:

    https://www.cmotion.eu/shop/products/search/Search/cat/1/page/1/compact+LCS

So I thought I would introduce it myself.

I saw it for the first time in Cinec, last September, and I thought it was worth to keep an eye on it. I made a preorder and they finally started shipping last month. I have had mine for two weeks and so far so good.

The Cforce motors are very fast, and very silent as well. I tested them side by side with Scorpio motors and they were much more silent. I believe they are build by Arri, or maybe just some of the parts are build by Arri, I can't assure that.

Calibration is quite fast, takes seconds. I haven't compare it with others. But both AC's that have used it so far think it's very fast too.

The Camin (motor drive box) is small, compact and lightweight, very good for hand held and Steadicam. It has a 1/4 16 hole in one side, and in the center of the back it has a "rossete" to screw the Cfast rod connector. A bracket that Cmotion includes in the package to put the Camin in 15 or 19mm bars.

They use a daisy chain system to link the motors, so each motor powers and conects to the next one. This keeps the Camin smaller, with minimum conectors, and cables tidy.

You can select which motor you use for focus, Iris or zoom in the handunit menu. The pressets you choose will keep saved in the menu, so you can mark the motors (each motor has a small white "board" to mark them, but the handunit also recognizes each motor serial number) for F, I or Z control and use the same motor for each control every time, or you can change them easily and select the motor control each time in the handunit menu.

The hand unit, the first time I saw it, I thought it was very different from any other I had seen, its design it's quite "daring" I thought, but surely very ergonomic and comfortable. A bit too long maybe, but still very lightweight, and with the battery inside, at the bottom of the handle, the weight balances very well.

The knob is obviously very smooth, it's a shame that you will not be able to use Cmotion's Advanced Knob with the Compact system, so you have no control of friction and adjustable physical limits in the knob.

The menu is very easy and intuitive, you can adjust the torque, direction and ramp of the motors.

You can download the user guide in Cmotion's web site and see more details about it.

I'm not an AC, haven't used other systems on a professional level, so I've asked a focus puller friend of mine to test it, and last week I rented it in a TVC and the focus puller also liked it.

He was very impressed with how fast it was. He had to do a long focus change from background to foreground and he said it worked great.

Very lightweight, he said, and he didn't even used half a battery in a 14 hour day.

The only weak point he mentioned (of course it must be mentioned as well) is the Iris control. It's not a slider button, but a rocker button in the back side of the hand unit. It's comfortable to use, but you can't mark the stops in the hand unit. He didn't have any problem because it was hand held, not on a crane, so he could see the stop in the lens, and the DOP was exposing with a monitor, so he was never asked to change to an specific stop, but still, he would have changed that.

The joystick control for the Zoom (or iris or focus, you can choose any option of control) works great, very sensitive. You can adjust the speed for the joystick and rocker button fast and easy with the menu controls.

In general is a great system to have in consideration for anyone with a budget.

I guess many of you know Cmotion already, but just in case I have to mention that they have a great customer service. I dealt with Clemens Hoenig through the whole process, and he was always very helpful by email or on the phone. Always replied very fast, answered all my questions and solved all my problems before and, most importantly, after the selling.

I hope this helps, and excuse any grammatical mistakes.

I might post photos in the near future.

    All the best,

    Guille

  4. Does anyone have any information of mounting brackets for the small HD? Or if it would be compatible with other brands of mounting brackets?

I'm specially interested in a bracket like the Cinetronic or Transvideo monitors have that attaches from the sides of the monitor to easily change the angle of the monitor and keep the weight in the CG of the monitor.

Thanks for any informations, I couldn't find anything in their web site.

  5. Hola Pedro,

    Saludos y suerte

  6. When the next generation Alexa comes along the size of an epic i might put it back on. Its been off for 5 years.

    Hi Thomas,

just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you use it with the Alexa or heavy cameras? Besides keeping dynamic balance, in which I do agree with you and Eric, wouldn't you find any other situation where it would help? You don't keep it always on your sled because you don't think you would use it, or because you prefer to keep your sled shorter or...? Sorry, just wondering...

In my case I do like and use the tilt head. Although the tilt head adds some distance between the camera and gimbal that sometimes I wouldn't want to have, I find it very useful in low mode, for example.

It's true that I only use it in specific shots, but if I know I'm going to be tilting up/down for the whole shot, it only takes seconds to adjust it, and if I'm in low mode, for example, having to tilt up to keep the actor's head in shot, walking backwards and maybe doing turns, it's just easier to operate and keep horizon if I can tilt up the head and keep the post vertical.

It's just a helpful thing to have, sure you can do it as good without it, and keep your skills in shape. Sometimes it just helps.

    Thanks,

    Guillermo

    Hi Guillhermo,

Have you looked at the Anton/Bauer DIONIC HC or HCX batteries? Just an option....

    REgards,

    Paul

Thank you Paul, I'm now in contact with Moncada y Lorenzo in Spain, I will consider them as well. And thanks for your opinion as well Osvaldo!

    Best wishes,

    Guillermo

  8. Hello all,

I'm looking to buy some V-mount batteries for my Sled. I recently bought a Steadicam Phantom, and I still don't have batteries. I was considering to buy 4 Powercubes with quad charger to begin with, to work mostly with the Alexa. But I've been recommended to consider the new Paglink batteries presented recently at IBC in Amsterdam.

Does anyone have comments about them? Would you recommend them over the Powercubes, for its technical aspects, and regardless of the price (which I don't know yet, and might be a consideration if it's a big difference... but for my first set of batteries I just want to have good reliable batteries to work with any power demanding camera)?

Thank you in advance, hope to have some replies soon,

    Respectfully,

    Guillermo

  9. Hello,

I'm Guillermo, new in this forum.

I'm very interested in doing a workshop, idealy a 5day WS, or at least one that works with both light and heavy rigs.

A friend, who I first met as a Steadicam op, and the one who introduced me to this crazy idea of being a steadicam op myself, recommended me to do the workshop in America, instead of Europe (I'm from Spain).

As it happens, I have a great oportunity to do so this winter, since my girlfriend will be in Miami for three months and I will spend a month holiday there.

So I'm looking for workshops between November2010 and January 2011.

I've checked already the Fourth Annual Eastern Classic Steadicam Workshop, in Whitesburg. But it's already sold out. I don't know if I should get on the waiting list, or just find another one.

If there isn't any whorthy workshop going on on those dates, I'm open to hear any suggestions of other WS in America or Europe.

Which are the ones with best reputation?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions. I hope to get many ;)

    Guillermo
