I took the plunge and bought a used one last week. Very impressed so far. The build is incredibly solid for the price. and it feels very capable. You are of course saving money in lots of places but it feels like conveniences mostly. Incredible value for money. The arm is defiantly the first upgrade. Just not as responsive as a G70. But again at the price... I cant believe it does what it does. The docking bracket is so so. Very happy with the rig so far.

Hey all. I don't know if anyone does this, but... I'm prepping for a song and dance number, so I was practicing out in the car park and set my phone on the practice cage and played the opening scene from "La La Land". I tried my best to match the footwork of the Steadicam operator (minus the cranes) as the scene played out. Forward, backward, switches, etc. I'm not comparing myself to them. Anything but. However, while watching the scene, it was good practice to have the blocking and music to attempt to match. Pretty cool!

Considering that top stage is at least 32 years old, you might be better off buying either a Betz topstage or the DB3S (that optical support makes). Both have a rod mount option and will be more rigid than the diving board that you're trying to use. Even a well loved DB3 with the diving board will be less prone to vibration than the DB1. Consider too that the DB1 at this point I believe is unserviceable because the parts don't exist. Alternatively, you could have something machined that clamps to the post, but you lose space as far as how high you can move your gimbal to the upper jbox. Talk to Jarrett Morgan here in Atlanta. If you need something custom, he's your guy. Also flies with the volt and has made some volt brain components that he already makes.

Hi all, I sell my backup/spare rig. It's a Smartsystem Matrix Extreme with lots of additional accessories. It's a 3G-sdi 12/24v sled with 3rd battery plate and which can power a Ronin 2 at the bottom of the sled with TB50/55. Volt upgradeable. Sled is bought new in 2019 and serviced/cleaned by Smartsystem last year. Very good condition with only minor scratches. The only "problem" is the docking bracket screw which no longer locks but this does not prevent the good use of the docking bracket. Come with a lot of cables for almost all camera setup, screws and custom hard case. Greetings to everyone, For those of you who may be considering upgrading their Sled to HD we currently have several HD-SDI Wiring Harnesses/Looms available, which are purpose-built for 1 ½” inch Centre Posts. The Specs are as follows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DESIGN FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS ------------------------------------------------------------- The cord consists of a coiled section with a straight tail on either end of it. Each straight tail is approximately 1 metre/39 inches long. The extra length in the tail gives the operator two options: The electrics person can cut off the extra length, strip off the outer sheath, and use the inner wires for the internals of the upper and lower junction boxes. For sale is the ONLY 87ft Strada Crane ever manufactured. Usually this model Strada Crane is 85ft. This crane has been used on James Cameron’s Titanic, Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor just to name a notable few. Also countless television productions, events and specials such as all of the X-Games and U.S. Open. If you haven’t been convinced yet, this crane is HUGE! The total crane weight is 5,500 pounds, the base of the crane is 6’ by 8’ and rides on 4 tires, and the crane is transported in its own trailer. The crane has multiple length configurations to meet the need of the shot. An arm length of 40ft gives you a lens height of 35ft. A 47ft arm has a 42ft lens height. A 54ft arm has a 49ft lens height. A 60ft arm has a 55ft lens height. A 74ft arm has a 64ft lens height. Lastly, an arm length of 87ft will give you a whopping 75ft lens height. Over 7 stories of camera movement available! With that amount of versatility, some extra space will be needed for operating the crane. From 40ft to 60ft arm lengths, the operator will need a 15ft by 20ft area, and from 74ft to 87ft arm lengths, the operator will need an area of 20ft by 30ft. A crane this large provides a nose load of 150 pounds. That allows for a lot of options when choosing a remote head and camera configuration to fly. I am asking $85,000 for everything. This includes the crane, weights, cabling, and trailer. Located in Los Angeles. Local pickup is required, as it all fits in its trailer. A few additional notes: This was Rick Johnsons personal crane, it has several features that none of the other Strata cranes have. Only arm with 9ft tail option up to 60 ft, as opposed to regular 12ft tail. Crane base can be completely disassembled and "packed in". The weight bucket is mechanized which allows for it to stay preloaded with thousands of pounds and adjusts forward and aft for balance. I know this is the Steadicam forum, but i figured I may as well try listing this crane on here for exposure. My Titanium socket block split in two at the thinnest surface and I believe starting at the little hole where the spring end fits after years of use with a my WK vest. It was actually a very light camera package (Alexa Mini) on my PRO sled. Replaced it with a steel block and never had a problem since.

I've seen posts in the past of people having the spherical rod ends fail on their pro arm from this setup (the rod end develops a stress fracture and cracks), but it seems like a pretty rare occurrence. I ran my arm for about two years this way and never had any problems and I know people who have been doing it longer and it's been fine. I did finally buy a rigid socket block adapter for peace of mind though. I guess the idea is, you can run the arm and vest together knowing that it might fail one day, or get the rigid socket block adapter and know that if anything fails it very likely won't be the mount.

I've begun work on piecing together a sled (it'll be a bit of a Franken-rig 3A, but it's a big upgrade from what I have now). However, the starting point of a sled I am looking to purchase does not include any electronics, and the wiring was all done by the previous owner. I'm planning on re-doing it all from scratch, and hopefully with some professional help. In beginning to work up some designs, and it's made me really curious as to whether I need 12v or 24v power for the sled. As more and more work moves to digital cameras, most of which are usable on 12v, would it make any sense to focus on having a really good 12v system, or would it be better to just go 24v from the start. Right now, the market I'm in doesn't even have any film cameras, let alone anything higher-end than a RED. And, while I'm sure I'd love to operate some film jobs, I think that the level that I am (and probably will be) at for some time will keep me planted in the video world. I also anticipate that this sled will eventually be replaced, once I do move up in skill and funds. So, what do people think? Is a 12v only sled viable? I really appreciate the help!
