HD Video and Display Another early requirement was to get a new, brighter LCD preview display onto the Flyer. While it didn't have to be HD, it would be nice to have something higher quality. At the same time, as the C100 only has HDMI out, with no provision for HD SDI, the analog composite cabling of the old Flyer had to go. I picked a Lilliput A7S 7" monitor, primarily because of these attributes: It has a native 1920x1200 panel that is bright enough for the indoor operation I was likely to use the Steadicam for It supports variable DC voltage power It has 1/4" 20 mounting positions on top and bottom, plus a VESA bracket mount It was fairly cheap compared to other solutions like SmallHD Because of those mounts, it was easy to unscrew the old Steadicam generic monitor and put the A7S in its place: The A7S monitor uses HDMI inputs which suits the C100 fine, but the major obstacle became fitting a video cable down the very narrow original Flyer sled post. The original analog video cable and DC power wires were thin enough for the half inch ID pipe, and while an HDMI cable was snug, the connector head of the regular HDMI cable was impossible to pass through. Cutting off an HDMI connector and resoldering it on the other end of the post was a non starter, the HDMI standard uses multiple pins, differential signalling, and a 100MHz plus bandwidth. Soldering twenty small pitch pins was not going to be possible by an amateur. What I did realize was that a micro HDMI cable, from my time at BlackBerry, would fit through the connector very carefully. If I trimmed the rubber connector head, it would fit through from the top stage down through the post and out towards the LCD monitor. Once through the post, I could use a cheap micro HDMI to regular HDMI adapter from Amazon. I soldered up the output from the new battery box I made, and connected it to the monitor. Powering the C100 using its own battery, I now had a working Steadicam.

Forgot to mention that the Flyer LE also has the same bearing housing,Delrin sleeve and yoke bearings. Only difference being the design of the handle. Very reminiscent of the SK and IIIa models.

For anyone who likes to tinker and modify, I thought I would share the new project and explain a few things. So the Scout was introduced in 2010 with a max cam weight of 18-19lbs. It held onto the single "rod" concept from the Pilot. The mount to the post is a lot beefier but the "rod" stayed the same size. Having a pilot myself and modifying it like crazy, I knew right away what I was going to do to the Scout. Get rid of said "rod". The one that came with my Scout had been a little overtightened and did not slide back and forth very well. So I wanted to figure out how to get my bottom electronics box and the rods for the battery onto it. Well I lucked out by having the old Pilot because I just used the "rod" from it, cut it down and used the 2 monitor mounts and 2 rod clamps to attach it to the base. I didn't want to cut the post like I did on the Pilot. It can all be put back to it's original state if ever I decide to sell it. I used a bigger Hammond box(1590C) to give myself a little more room to house all the wiring. Again I used a power board from a Camvate(Rolux) v mount distro plate. I run 14.8V for Dtap, 12V,5V and another HD SDI line. Benchmarked, the voltage is stable and as I am not running power to any camera's right now, I'm not too worried about my amperage. My JVC LS300 runs on its own batteries and I fly a 12K Ursa Mini with its own battery as well. My monitor runs on 12V and on the top stage I am able to power a wireless HD video transmitter and a follow focus. All in all, I would say it works just fine. Any questions please feel free to ask. Ouch!! There would have to be a LOT of weight to do that. Even with a Vmount battery, you would still be safe for the bottom stage. And considering the Pilot is about 17 years old and those clamps are cast aluminum it could be due to age?? But if it was hit in just the right place that thing could snap easy. I've discontinued my Pilot as well!! Haha!! Did the set screw shear right through the carbon fiber?
