  2. I really didn't know Jeff but by strange coincidence, his daughter worked for my mother at a local bay area newspaper. I just heard this moment that he passed away this morning. I hate to be the one to announce this, I only knew of him by reputation and feel very sorry for his families loss.
  3. THAT WAS AWESOME. I Saw another version of this earlier this year. It was paroding the superbowl. Its a series I guess. This one is so much better! Thanks for posting it!
  4. I wanted to post a picture from a ridiculous job I did this weekend. I thought it might be a good idea to create this thread so we can see the type of jobs us newbs are working on. Anyways....here is the rundown. Typical super low-budget horror movie. Camera is ARRI 2B....NO videotap! I had to mount a mini-dv camera ontop of the matte box. No follow focus or focus puller...SO SET IT AND FORGET IT! I hope more NEWBS like myself will post pics of their set-ups. I think it would be cool to see the other end of the spectrum in the steadicam world. For some of you really new to this site....you need to be a sustaining member to post images. It costs like $30 roughly... i think. You should do it anyway. This site is managed by a lot of cool people (FOR FREE) and they deserve our gratitude! Thanks again to all moderators and Tim Tyler for this site!
  5. For a short time, I had access to a BVW300 which i used to practice with. I also have a cage and i definitely notice a difference in the feel with mass spread out. It was a good camera to practice with but I haven't yet had a camera on my rig that felt close to it. I mainly fly 16mm cameras and have only had a couple of 35s on my rig. I just flew an ARRI 2B this weekend, which i will post pictures of later. Given the budget and production value...I'm going to create a thread called YOUR SETUP "DE-JOUR" FOR NEWBS" I should have turned down the job but who can refuse a a movie about a white samuri priest who fights vampires....I mean come on!
  6. I'm from the bay and I've always wondered why nobody thought it might be a bad idea to name something with ADOLPH and GASSERS. WTF? Anyways, I've always gone to DTC....heard many good things about JCX though
  7. hey charles, can i use that on my IIIa top stage? IIIa doesn't have the quick release top stage and I hate having to slide the camera in versus just snapping it in at the top. thanks charles. gordo
  8. Alex, That is really nice of you to offer your brother the funds to take the workshop. I'll basically relay what other OPs told me when I was getting into steadicam.... the workshop is the cheapest investment when it comes to steadicam. Rigs can cost anywhere between 7k and 70k depending on brand and the application it will be used for. If supporting him with a purchase of a rig is something you're not willing or capable of doing, then definitely hold off for a while. If he is really interested in steadicam, he will have to make a choice and do what it takes. I was always fascinated with steadicam and thought it was entirely out of my reach. One day I asked myself why can't I do it too? I began to realize what it would take and two years later here I am...still very new to steadicam and struggling in between jobs but I love it so much...very glad I made the choice. I Still have a long way to go but it will be fun. good luck
  9. NICE PACKAGE! He's got a pretty nice rig too:)
  10. My J-box has seen its last days Looking to pick up a used one. If anybody has an extra one laying, please get in contact with me and let me know how much you want for it. thanks
  11. I'm guessing my 4pin 12v jack on my j-box is dead. I was wondering if anybody in san fernando area might have an extra IIIA j-box i could borrow for tomorrow. I would really appreciate it if somebody wouldn't mind letting me drive on over sometime this evening and pick it up. I could have it back to you tomorrow evening or the next day....whatever works with your schedule. Thanks
  12. Hey Lars, Chris, and Stephen, thanks for all the info. So here is what happened... We had to power the bartech with a battery belt so the ac was teathered to me. Also, I told production to rent a modulus and they didn't and the director insisted on seeing it at video village. Plus, sound guy showed up without wireless and began to plug in 4 cables!!! All of a sudden, I'm teathered to 6 cables and going to three places. After so many takes I made a fit and said screw sound and video village. I got it down to two cables and then I nailed the shot in 3 takes. Thanks CHRIS....You would have been disapointed in my posture yesterday. I noticed myself hunched over a few times but refused to straighten up so I wouldn't screw up the shot :( Gordon
  13. Hello everyone, I just got called about a job tommorow for a student film using a DSR-450. I've been doing some DVX jobs which I have a cage for but it seems this camera will be too big to fit inside the cage and without the cage it will be about 5 pounds to light for my 3A. Any suggestions to weight it down properly? I did a job with a similar camera and I remember the 1st rigged a lcd monitor on top of the hot shoe and the weight was so high, I couldn't balance it. Also, is it possible to power a bartech and a modulus from the dsr-450 body? The only time I use these accessories are when I'm shooting s16 and in that situation...I have the camera power them on since I do not have the right cables yet for myj-box. I think it would just be easier to power these accesories via the camera since I have not tested powering up these units with my rig. ANy ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much gordon
  14. Thanks for posting that clip Afton. You totally beat me to it. Love your new avatar Afton. needs to be a shirt! gordon
  15. Hey Robert, Maybe yout rig was a 3 not a 3A. I have a 3A and there are two switches on the left side of the screen to flip the image. Did you notice two switches on the monitor? I am not familiar with the 3 so I'm really just guessing. take care gordon
  16. Hey Erwin, Just curious which workshops have you taken? Do they still have masters workshop. I would love to take another workshop and maybe visit an advanced workshop to see what goes on. gordy g
  17. Wow....ACF-50 is the best 20 bucks I've ever spent. Thanks for all the help Job, Jason, and bob. Gordon
  18. my shot was cancelled...maybe its sign that I should wait. I'll just wait for the acf-50 to show up. thanks again
  19. OK my bad, I won't use WD40. I know a lot has been mentioned on lubrfication but my main concern now is would it be dumb to use some type of lubrication for a shot I have to do in the afternoon. Later on today I will be getting some ACF-50 (someone will be bringing it to me) Is it a problem to use ACF50 after I've already applied other lub earlier in the day. If so..should I remove the original oil/lub.used something else. SFX here has plenty of nice lubrication and i was just wondering if this is a stupid idea. thanks
  20. I know this topic has been covered several times but I have a specific question. I was practicing last night and when i finished, I noticed some tension in the elbow of my arm. there is a substantial amount of rust at the connection point of both ends of the elbow. I have some ACF-50 coming tommorow afternoon but I have a real small easy one shot gig tomorrow and I'm wondering if WD40 would work ok as a bandaid. Is it a problem to add ACF-50 after you have already added some lubrication or WD40. thanks
  21. Hey Rob, Thanks for the info. I carefully looked through all these pieces to see if there was any defects. I couldn't see anything wrong. Maybe these images will help. sorry for the delay in my response but i kept forgetting to bring my camera home. Also, all the pieces below are available through tiffen. I had been looking for this clamping mechanism for months, then I did this flyer job where the rig was provided. The parts below are flyer parts...but used to be IIIA. If anybody needs these parts... you need to tell tiffen that its a flyer part...otherwise they will tell you they don't make them anymore:(
