I just taught at the PRO Workshop and was so impressed with their new battery hanger. It is solid and beautiful and handles HD no problem. This was not achieved easily. George Paddock spent well over a year developing how to make the HD be reliable in his rig and he did not release it until he had this worked out. Wow! Another concept MK-V are immune to. George was willing to acknowledge the complications (there are many) and revisited his approach more than once in order to offer you the customer/operator a reliable, modular and very sexy rig.

I just can't say enough good things about PRO and XCS. It is why I own their products. I own multiple rigs.

Will was a stellar teacher at the PRO Workshop and I am SO glad that I went with PRO. Can't say enough about the support (thanks Jack and Ash!) and the quality of what they produce. My rig also has XCS pieces and they -- like their inventor Greg Bubb -- are rock solid and completely reliable.

  2. Looking for a smaller BFD-compatible analog motor for a 10 day shoot starting this Friday. Please let me know what you have and rates, etc. Shoot is in L.A..

*Edit* Totally slipped my mind last night when I posted this: if it helps in any way I am more than willing to exchange my M-One for the other motor for the duration of the shoot so that you'll have a motor available for your own use.

    Thanks so much, everybody!

  3. How many operators here have a Steadicam Assistant that they bring along on jobs?

How often do you use them?

Do they have to be part of a union?

Do they have to be a 1st AC?

Just wanting to see who's doing what and how.

It would also be nice to see what people are charging to have a steadicam assistant.

I started as an uncredited/Non-Union/PA-rate Cam Dept Gopher. Learned a ton from doing so and the sacrifice was well worth it. Saved a decent chunk of change by living like a pauper for a few years and am now starting my lifelong journey as a Cam Op/Steadicam Op. Met a lot of awesome people along the way and should I turn out to be worth a crap -- I owe them more than I can ever repay them. Even so, I will attempt to repay them with copious amounts of liquor and good food!!! :D

  4. Hey do any of the fine folks here have any idea where to get a surveillance walkie rig that has an iPod input? I saw one that had three wires going into the walkie plug, Mic, Ear Piece and 1/8th mini for a iPod and that's the one that seems to be the hot ticket. I have one that has in interface box but it get's confused and mutes out the radio all the time. Thanks!

An AD buddy of mine told me about this place: SurveillanceHeadset.com

  5. Hey all: the proddy co that I'm working for forgot to send down my downconverter and wireless transmitter. Can anybody lend one out for the weekend? Will leave collateral and have the items returned by 8pm (at the latest) on Sunday evening.

I'm flying the latest PRO rig.

Thanks for any and all help anybody can give. B)

  6. I am the farthest thing from a member of the Ethics/Morality Police, BUT, as somebody that grew up during the era of workplace shootouts such as 101 California St., I find this to be completely unwatchable.

You may have done a somersault at full tilt down a flight of stairs, in the course of your operating, and I'd be none the wiser as I turned it off after the f*ckheads started dancing.

Boo to whoever came up with the concept.

  7. Hey guys,

My M-One is starting to judder without reason. I had feedback that suggests it is the potentiometer that needs replacing. Is there anyone in the UK that can offer support on this?

I have tried calling and emailing Loon in the US but had no response.

Big respect to Jim at Bartech for Uber quick responses.

    Andy

Just as a heads-up to all M-One owners: spoke w/ Don today and he's in the middle of a move.

  8. Mamet's teachings are chock-full of theoretical errors. Easily dismissible by any junior at SF State. Hell, I think I'll contact J. Hammett and have her get her students to rip his so-called absolutes to shreds.

No, I will not play the part of Cliff and give you Notes. Read and study for yourself.

  9. I think the very briefest explanation I can offer is this: the camera outputs in HD-SDI (High Definition-Serial Digital Interface). Your Vizio's coaxial input (the F connector that you screw a coax cable or BNC to with a female BNC to male F connector) only reads an ATSC signal. Without going into it, your television cannot understand an HD-SDI input through that port, only an ATSC signal (from an HD antenna that receives ATSC signals over the air).

William, thanks a ton for that very succinct response. B) I shall be ordering the AJA unit in the morning.

  10. Perhaps it's not clear in the above post, but the Vizio is seeing absolutely no signal at all. I have asked the Vizio to scan all channels and it is coming up with nothing. This is with the camera turned on and transmitting.

I have tested to see if the camera is putting out a good signal, and it is. Testing method: camera to Canatrans broadcasting to Hermes wired to Director's Monitors.

  11. I am seeing how, other than resorting to using an AJA Hi5 HD-SDI/SDI to HDMI Video and Audio Converter, I can get a wired, full 1080p signal to my Vizio.

I would like to be able to use it as a video village monitor and simply connecting a bnc cable to the camera and then converting bnc to coaxial and connecting to the DTV/TV input on the Vizio is not working.

Yes, I am electronically-retarded! Would somebody mind telling me:

    a. Why my simpleton method is not working

    b. A workaround

    c. A workaround which does not involve spending money on another piece of equipment such as the aforementioned AJA.

    Thanks so much!

  12. Hey everybody, just making my first post to say hello and introduce myself. :)

I'm new to the Steadicamming side of production, but did do some in film school (and shot the majority of my senior film off of a Steadi). I've read a ton of the posts on here regarding the life of a Steadicam operator, the majority of which seem to focus on day rates and the low-ballers/undercutters. I'm letting it be known that I'll be doing none of this and that I'll definitely be getting my chops in the film school world and on low-budg music vids.

If anybody has any further advice/do's/dont's, please feel free to post here, and if there is something specific that warrants privacy please don't hesitate to send a PM.

I'm creating a Frankenrig right now with personal funds and money from a business partner; looking forward to practicing my ass off and meeting other operators. Looking to take a workshop, along with private instruction, also.

Hopefully I won't commit to many newb mistakes as far as forum etiquette is concerned. Should I do so, would you please consider using some lube on the reaming?! Thanks! :D
