  1. Hi Brendan, If you want as many features as the Tilta promises , you then have to look at Arri, Preston, C-motion. If you just need a reliable no-frills unit, the digital bartech is still high on my list. Lots and lots of new contenders today (heden carat/axis1/microremote...) and I have not tested half of them so I won't comment. I have used extensively Preston's, Arri , C-motion, Bartech and would recommend each one for a different reason, you will find most of the answers on the forum. Hope that helps, good luck. Frederic
  2. I'm on a group buy for that remote . It's been delayed and we just get some random update on it's status. No shipping dates yet. IKAN is the distributor in the US, you could call them. Performance, reliability, customer service .... All of this won't be available for a while.... If you need something in the next year, I would strongly recommend looking at other vendors. Cheers. Frederic
  3. Does it have a fan ? I sold my Boland at the time because of this. It was very intense. Great screen for sure . Built quality was there also.
  4. Mavericklabels , fast & efficient . Ordered twice . Always happy.
  5. Hi Tammy, Will keep an eye open in Montreal. If you need some preston bits while you wait for a replacement , let me know if I can help (email) . Cheers F
  6. Yesh, YakTrax are ok, try this pair: http://www.mec.ca/product/5017-316/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-device/?q=spike only if you can use them on ice and snow, they will be destroyed when you hit pavement. I have a pair with me but rarely use them.
  7. Hi Janice, I live and operate in Montreal, Canada. Depending on where you live, we all have a different view on what "very cold" actually is. For me, very cold will be like today , -20 celcius (-4F) . At that point, there is no easy solution . I have tried almost everything and have different answers, here's one that works most of the time: Let start with hands, that's number one problem, gloves will make you swear for dexterity loss but hand warmers in the pockets will allow you to remove your gloves for the shot and rapidly put it back in your warm coat pocket after the shot. Feet, no other solution than to have two pairs all the time with one warming up in the truck with extra socks , very important to change BOTH boots AND socks. I have also tried the NEOS overshoes https://www.overshoe.com/Pages/default.aspx and it works very well as long as I don't have to run , the nice thing here is that you keep your normal operator shoes so the feel inside the NEOS is pretty much the same as any day. Well worth the 150$. The over the vest coat works all the time but I have tried the new milwaukee heated hoodie (powertool company) http://www.milwaukeetool.ca/heated-gear that I can wear UNDER the vest. This kind of gear works best when you have something over it to keep it close to your skin. The vest just does that. There are three settings for temperature, low, medium, and high (broil) , if you have ever used a heated car seat, it's the exact same feeling. A battery will last 2/3 hours so I bought 3 to make it thru the day. There are some days where you just wish the equipment will stop working but I have been quite surprised up to now. Hope that helps ! Cheers, Frederic
  8. Clearing some stuff : This vest has been collecting dust for the last 3 years, I just went back to my front mounted vest . Everything is in excellent condition. I would rate the cosmetics a 7/10. Couple of scratches from normal use, no abuse here. All pads linings are clean ( just washed them today) Vest will fit a 33/36 waist, I'm 5'11. You have also the extension to get a couple more inches at the waist. Comes in the soft transport bag from Klassen (not pictured) Only thing missing is the air pump. 25$ from Klassen . Any bike shop will get you one, no magic here. 2000$US (2300$CAN) I accept Square payments (mastercard/visa/AMEX) 100$ shipping to Canada using Canada post 120$ shipping to USA using USPS Rest of the world : will only ship on your FEDEX/UPS account. https://www.flickr.com/photos/90607088@N06/sets/72157650005055545/
  9. Thanks Peter, Very useful . I'll add the Nanuk case dimensions : http://www.nanuk.com/content.asp?node=2 Frederic
  10. What Alan said, While many OEM plates will fit ; I have never had any connection problems with genuine AB plates while I broke pins and literally split in two a chinese plate. The extra money is well worth it.
  11. I own both systems (Preston HU3/F/I unit/MDR2 and Arri WCU4,SXU1/UDM4) : Both are great/not so great for different reasons : Preston: •#1 remote in North America, all AC's have used it. •Plug and play, no software bugs, no frills. •Mix and match digital motors from different manufacturers (I have DM2/DM1X/RED motors attached to it) •Built like a tank •Ridiculously long wait for many parts and they don't seem to be catching up. High resale value on the used market. Arri: •No need of MDR when using Alexa's that have the internal MDR's, a very strong selling point. •Ergonomics are excellent, not plug and play but fairly easy to use with minimum learning curve •Lots of software bugs (most minor) , irritating coming from Arri, they do listen and updates are frequent. •Zoom control built into the hand unit •back lighting of the focus ring is great •motors are amazingly fast and precise (CLM4) I also rent both and as of right now, it's really 50/50 for preferences. I'm not ready to sell my Preston gear yet, but Arri is getting very good at making remotes. Fly safe, Frederic
  12. Ok, I just received my RED motor after almost a year.... I hooked it up to my Preston MDR2 and HU3 and here are my first impressions: •Very small, very light, very silent. •Torque is less than a DM2 but seems to be around a Heden vertical motor. •Gear snaps on both sides in a breeze. •Holding bracket is very intuitive and can also be used on both sides. 15mm inserts (not shown) just snaps into the 19mm one (no screws required) •Swivel connector •Price is so low it is hard to not be tempted : I won't sell my DM2's but this will surely be my new iris motor from now on. Fly safe. F
  13. Hi Lee, David Hable sent me this adapter all built from scratches and he used an empty shell from his drawers. Maybe he had some Monster remotes bits and parts from them. I know he has some of my old cables with my name on it somewhere on his floor....
  14. Around 1k for everything ; taking it apart , sanding , anodizing and putting it back together . Better reach him direct for a quote. It's not cheap but my Preston was such in bad shape cosmeticaly that it was worth it . www.crampedattic.com
  15. My HU3 needed a good tune-up and while at it, I had David Hable re-anodize it in a "rust" color instead of plain black . Substantially raises the odds of recovery if ever stolen.
  16. Hi Thomas, The Cinetronic Gen 2 yoke with a small modification : The Small HD DP7 is about 1/4 an inch wider than the Cinetronic so I had my machinist replicate the transversal rod by a longer one. I sold the Cinetronic but kept the yoke as I liked it. And I put some locktite in the screw holes at both ends of the new rod to make sure it would not come loose. hope that helps.
  17. Cleaning the shelves: Used Decimator 2 with scuffs and tape/velcro residue. Missing the AUDIO RIGHT RCA connector. I actually had it removed as it was in the way for some HDMI cables to plug in. Comes with AC adaptor. 280$ shipping included in Canada and US Paypal or credit card thru square . http://www.flickr.com/photos/90607088@N06/sets/72157641820091724/
  18. Hi have the DP7 PRO HB SX for 2 months now and can only praise the built quality and clean image. And the service from SmallHD is fast and efficient. It will display all HD format without changing the camera settings. The back plate is rock solid with a nice battery meter. Menus are a breeze to go into and I actually love the hotkey function. Now my primary monitor on every job. photo par frederic.ca, sur Flickr
  19. Hi, I have used John re-cell services many times and I give 5 stars to his work. Communications are great and the job is flawless. Highly recommended . Re-celling is almost 1/3 of the price of new. If your Dionic shells are in good shape, I would go the re-cell way. Only con I can see is the cycle counter can't be reset. I just take a ptouch label and stick a "+XXX cycles" to each battery when it comes back so you can still count the cycles. Good luck. Frederic
  20. http://www.mavericklabel.com/products/asset-tags.html Very happy with service and results. Simple and very resistant.
  21. I have had Swit batteries and charger in gold mount for about 3 years before coming back to genuine AB products . 2 of the 3 chargers failed at one point . One battery died by being dropped on the floor once . Battery gauge was never accurate. Not worth it if you ask me . I actually opened one of the defect charger at one time to find what seemed a cheap laptop ac converter bundled in electrical tape with the extra cord powering the charger boards.... Service was good from local dealer , if thats any help .
