  1. I was just at Abel looking at it the other day. Its a great little camera with the emphasis on little. The body weighs just over 4 pounds, and all it's accessories are super light too including Sonys new Vmounts, which are apparently excellent. I'd definitely bring your weight plate.

  2. Hi Peter

I'd be really interested to hear how you think the vest performs with extremely slow moves? My last two years I feel have been all about training myself to keep my hips as level as possible and my movements angular. All of us in our journey learn the hard way when we loose focus of this technique especially when the camera needs to move slowly and precisely, or "like a dolly." How does having pivots effect you're level of precision? I guess as a thought experiment (never having tried this vest) it could go either way. On the one hand since no matter how hard one tries not to swivel the hips when walking, its necessary on some level, i could see the pivots making for a more level socket block than is even possible with a rigid structure. On the other hand I could see circumstances when a pivot action could create unwanted movement in the socket block. Have you been in a situation when you want less pivot? Can you adjust the pivot?

  3. Can't wait till this puppy comes out. Hopefully it's good and reliable. Most things Sony are, so here's hoping.

Seems like a grat alternative to the big brother 65

I'm eager to see how the images intercut with the F65. Perhaps this could be a good lightweight body for use on F65 shows for handheld/steadi/aerial/underwater/etc/bacon? Is this the same sensor as in the F65 with diagonal photosites?

Also, I think this is the first camera I've seen to record 4K to "cards".

Its not the same sensor, but has the same color filter array...explained here: http://blog.abelcine.com/2012/11/01/sonys-pmw-f5-and-f55-defining-cfa/

  4. I recently upgraded to a big rig but I am not quite ready to depart with my beloved Archer 2. Its really perfect for about half of my clientele, but I can't afford to have it sitting around. This is an exploratory thread to gauge interest in the NY metro area for it as a rental rig. I think of it as a crossover vehicle. Its perfect if you have a flyer and get a job that with a heavier camera setup or if you have a big rig and get a job where you need to be light and mobile. I love it for documentary/live work, especially since the whole kit, vest, sled, and arm, packs up into a single case. I also have an adapter post for 5/8" so it can be used with a pro arm (a setup I was extremely happy with). I am also open to young operators who have taken a workshop and don't have a rig yet but I'd have to meet you and see you fly the rig and of course it wouldn't go out without insurance. For rates please email me at michaelhauer@gmail.com or call 917 696. If you think you would be a candidate to rent the rig but don't have an immediate need for it please get in touch as well. I want to see if this is a viable option for me, otherwise I am going to sell it.

    Thanks for your time!

  5. If there is someone in the New York area that can do the test I'd be willing to help you out.

Hi folks. I'm on a job with an Archer 2. Had a cable made up to go from the 8pin Lemo Monitor out at the bottom to feed 12V xlr power, bnc composite, and a Tally LED to velcro above the Marshall Monitor. Above the sled I have the Tiffen Tally sensor connector with the photo sensor and the multipin connector that plugs into the front of the front box. However, its working backwards. When the sensor gets a light the tally down below turns off, and vice versa. Sent the cables back and the two cables work just as they should on a work table.

If someone would be so kind as to take their archer sled with 1 battery to Terry's place in Redondo beach I would really appreciate it, Id be more than happy to cover gas and lunch or something. If the system works fine on your archer 2, then the sled here has a problem, if it works the same as with mine, then its a cable thing. Either way it would help get to the solution.

Call me if you can swing this.

  6. Hi,

I am getting more and more interested in steadicam and just shot my fourth music video, this time for Three Days Grace (RCA records) with Scarlet on a Zephyr.

I am loving working with this tool and I am seriously looking into getting a rig of my own (I am currently renting, which is less than ideal)

I am curious about larger sleds (Clipper, Archer, Shadow, Ultra...), mostly to fly an Alexa with all the needed gear.

I don't really know where to look for to try them out and see for myself.

    Thank you for your help.

    Victor L.

    Take a workshop

It really is the best way to get started if you're serious about this as a career.

  7. So I have access to a pro arm and although it is unorthodox would like to use it for my acher2 sled for a little while. Does anyone make a 5/8th to Ultra2 size post adapter? Tiffen has an ultra to archer post but nothing else. Maybe this is a bad idea but i figured it was worth a shot.

    Thanks

  8. I just had a need for something i never thought I would: shop glasses. Was doing a music video with shots of sugar glass being broken over people's heads. I think its a worthwhile thing to have, especially when you have a completely useless ad who fails to inform the talent that during rehearsals we don't break things. Was almost blinded yesterday....

  9. I had to do my first job in really cold weather recently. It was in the low teens but the wind chill made it feel below zero. I kept my operating hand in a mitten with hand warmers until right before the shot and this would hold up the body temp of my hand for the first take or so, but after that I literally had no feeling in my hands.

Does anyone use a thin glove in these situations or have a better system? Someone told me latex gloves would help.
