  1. Gentlemen,

I own a red spring 3a arm with an EFP, and while it's fine for video jobs SD to HD, I finding that I'm starting to get a little bit of 16mm work.

No problem right? Well not quite, I have a set of ProPacs which run to 2.5KG each plus with my Blackbird LCD that is heavier than the green CRT that it replaced, a fully loaded SR3a is just too much for my arm. That leaves me needing to hire in a gold spring 3a arm, which at the level I'm currently working at tends to cut into my fee a little. So, I'm looking at potential upgrades.

As I won't be able to keep my old arm as a spare, I'm wondering how much my arm would fetch on the open market. It'll at least give me an idea how much I'll need to save.

Check out the Rig Engineering page. They have some basic trade in prices on their site. Also, if your looking to upgrade with them, you won't have to find a buyer for your arm.

  2. Hi all.  BJ only missed it by one letter.  Grayson Austin (not Greyson).

Hi Chip.  How's it?  India was fun.  Food was horrible.

We just referred to everything as "bones in gravy".  Haven't been on in awhile as I have been busy until recently.  Most of my work was in New Orleans until the Hurricane.  Very sad all of that.  Did the Pilot for "Threshold"(Pilot/Part One of two part first episode) in Cali and some other TV jobs in New Orleans but now just playing a bit with my fantastic AR and waiting for my next job to start.  My cell has been useless but I will try to give you a call soon Chip as I am back in Florida at the moment.

    Grayson

Yea! Come on by. We'll have an outing at Pana with the AR. This weeks busy, but retiring after that........... till the next one.

    See Ya!

  3. The yellow cable is video and the black one looks to be power.  It's pulled tight probably because the cable wrangler wearing the belt couldn't keep up.

That's what I originally thought too Mitch....but since it's a panavised 235 I believe the yellow cable is power since many of Panavisions power cables are yellow. Funny, one of the first things I noticed when I looked at the picture was that cable pulled tight. I can just imagine some grip dragging on the ground behind him.

Maybe it's a "remote tilt stick".

  4. Also more important is the location of the antennas:  this is probably the single most important issue with these kind of Rf devices.  For good signal the transmitter antenna should be at the top of the rig with no obstructions around it.  I have a connector installed on top and bottom of my sled to make this easy in high and low modes.  The receiving antenna must also be in good line of sight position as well.

    Larry

    Just a quick question.

The connector at the top and bottom. Is that an antenna connector, or a power/video connector for the tx.

I was curious because I thought about making the TX part of the sled in the bottom, and just having the antenna on top.

Also, in the video / HD world, do you guys still run a TX next to the camera? On top of the camera? Any fear of RF hits on the tape?

  5. Chip,

I hope you didn't sell the Carmen Kass rig for an SK !!!

    Cheers mate !!!!

    Andrew

    Negative.

Just another toy to play with. It was Vaughns SK before they sold it when they went under, and it was a rig I spent a lot of time with when I was first learning. (still learning)

    sniff, sniff

  6. 3. Re-cell all 4 of the old ProPacs, and start saving for when they die again. =)

Any other options that you experienced people have?

I'm trying to do this cheap, but professional...

    Bryan

I'm a re-celling fan. Check out this link

    http://www.batteriesplus.com

I did 4 of my mini bricks thru them, here locally, and they are running great, and the price was right. $89 each. I asked them once about the regular sized bricks, and they quoted me a price, which wasn't that much more. Can't remember.

If there's a store locally for you, it saves you the shipping.

Look into different chargers too, something with a cycling feature. I have a frezzi 2100A, which does wonders for keeping ni-cad batteries alive and healthy. (It also does Ni-Mh)

There are cheaper alternatives for chargers too. Like R/C Car chargers. A lot of them do from 1-24 cells, charge and discharge. That would be a good one to keep at home on the workbench to tech them out. Mr McConkey posted a while ago about some findings he had. May be worth looking into.

  7. From what I can see, They streamlined it a bit.  The vari-speed control now has guard rails to prevent accidental adjustments.  The only problem I have with this unit is, the cable comes out of a bad position.  It somewhat ineterferes with the yoke.  I have re-cabled my unit with a thinner wire.  Nice mod.

    Jeff

I figured I'd re cable my Zoe II when it gets over stressed from it's exit position. You're right, it's not in a good spot for the yoke.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Chip

  8. I can't get the framelines to appear though, and I know it's possible, becuase I've used it before. Hopefully that manual will help some. If not i'll call the original owner.

I'm looking at the Transmedia LCDs as a replacement, but I am going to wait until after this workshop next week before I buy. I'm guessing that making a large purchase like that will come easier after a week of being with other rigs, and asking questions. Maybe even find a hint hintdeal up there...

I'll keep on shooting with it in squashed 16x9mode until i can find the funds for a new one.

    Bryan

The Frameline brightness adjustment should be the center knob with the other frameline adjustments. It may just be turned all the way down.

I just looked thru the EFP Manual I have, and it does not contain this monitor, just the LCD.

  9. A great monitor for all video uses - Standard Defintion (SDI/component/composite - PAL &NTSC) and High Definition (HDW F900/HDW F500 (HD-SDI/Analog all formats) and Varicam (HD-SDI 720/60/59.94)).

LCD Monitor greatly simplifies HD or SD acquisition whether on location or on the sound stage. Light, compact and thin, this 8.4" TFT LCD monitor combines high brightness and a wide viewing angle with 1024 x 768 XGA native resolution. This Monitor is a new design for delivery of crisp, clear HD or SD images.

I have one of these and the new HVX200 on order, they will go nicely with the Varicam shoots.

Was that supposed to read under $10k?

    BT-LH900

8.4" BT Series Multi-Format Color LCD Monitor

    U.S. List Price $4,890.00

However, you can get one free right now, if you buy a Varicam.

It is a great Monitor. I've used it on and off the Steadicam

    Chip

  10. Yeah, I've used theirs too. The Lithium Battery belts fail incredibly fast- you have to have spare belts hidden around the place in case you start to run low during a live event.  How long ago did you use their stuff? Perhaps they've solved some of those issues?

This was last September (2004). I think the camera had the smaller IDX V-Lock Batteries. But we only had 4 batteries for 2 cameras, so I had to share with the handheld. And we were in the Bahamas, so no chance of getting more. It would have killed my sled batteries too quickly to just use 1 battery for both.

Great Tech, though. No Camera problems, except when I got too far away from the recievers, which was quite a distance.

  11. Rich,

Is that a full size Micro Force? Or is there another.

I just got a Zoe II from Band Pro while I was out there. It's pretty sweet, and it fits right on the yoke with no modification. And the calibration pot is accesable on the outside of the unit with a jewelers screwdriver. I haven't had to adjust it yet, but only having tried it on a Canon lens.

I guess it's a phone call to Jim to get one of those Focus thingies soon.

    Take care,

    Chip

  12. A word about Seitz Technical ? John has recently been unable to concentrate on film industry related products the last few years because of company and personal reasons which are now thankfully in the past. He is anxious to get back into our business again. I am confident he will deliver and I will be involved to make sure you get your supply if you want to order one. All he wants for now is to get an idea if there is any interest and how many parts he should order initially. We are talking about some other ideas as well, so maybe you will be seeing other products I have wanted to produce coming in the near future..

    Larry

Does Seitz still repair / refurbish the older heden focus motors?

  13. Out of curiosity, how long are you without an arm if you order one?

Peace, Ruben "Armed and dangerous" Sluijter

I'm not sure about other deals, but they are sending me one, and I send mine after I get theirs. I think that's how they are operating, so you are not without your arm.
