  1. Yea, you can't check spare batteries if they're loose. You wanna be careful with it - there were reports a few years ago of a cameraman being fined something like $75k for having LiOn batteries in his checked baggage. Totally different regulations if you're shipping, lots of labeling involved... Here's a cheat sheet for you - http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/dgr/Documents/LithiumBattery_PassengerFlyer.jpg
  2. I had Backstage make a custom version of their stand holder for the Scout. I'm sure they still have the schematics or I can e-mail them if anyone's interested. They just machined it out of a bigger block of metal, not much more expensive than the Magliner version!
  3. These are part of my cold weather kit and I've found that very few people know about them - http://hotsnapz.com Reuseable hand warmers that are much warmer than the chemical packs (and also much better heat conductors, great when you've got cold hands right after docking the rig and need to warm them up quickly). The downside is they only last about half an hour, but I just have the assistants keep a stack of them in the ditty bag. Boil them at home to 'reset' them and they're good to go for the next day. Non-toxic too, I believe. I've used the zippo hand warmers for comparison, but they ended up being a real pain to get lit and keep going in the field.
  4. Hey All, Brand new 'Backstage Equipment MAG-SS ES Steadicam Stand Holder' for sale. Bought it then switched to an Inovativ Cart before I got a chance to use it (only fits thin-lipped carts). New $55, Asking $40. Located in LA. Local PickUp or Buyer Pays Shipping. ben.verhulst@gmail.com Thanks!
  5. Tom - did you ever finish that Wagner mounting mod to put it next to the Pro spud? Would love to see some pics. Thanks!
  6. That's a really good point Jerry. I might just stick to stairs and hills for resistance running. Farmer walks sound like a great idea. If someone were to develop a steadicam-geared training regime, I'm sure there'd be some interest.
  7. Though I agree the best Steadicam training is doing Steadicam, I'm talking about training your body to be more efficient and dexterous under load. I don't think I could recommend anyone go on a real run with any sort of Steadicam strapped to them, especially without a spotter. Sanjay - Before I saw it was on the arm, I thought you were holding that with one hand and just your thumb underneath. I was very impressed. Where did you get such a thing? James - That's great stuff, I've been looking into doing more high intensity training. Seems to be where it's at nowadays. Interesting to see what everyone does to stay ready. I just want my fitness to be the last thing I have to think about when I put the rig on, but now this really belongs in another forum.
  8. Was looking at this exact thing today and found this ancient orphan thread! So, ten years later does anybody do this? I try to run a 5k once a week and was considering adding a weighted vest to help with general steadicam fitness. The athletic advice seems to recommend 10% of your body weight, so the 20 lbs vests seem right. I wonder if a 40 pound vest, though a little closer to steadicam weight, would do more harm than good running. Thoughts Lawrence? Or did you just buy one as armor in the end?
  9. That's recently the Alexa hasn't worked, Victor? I know you used to have to turn the SDI flags on in the menu, but they're supposed to be permanently enabled now. That's a bummer. HyperDeck Shuttle ~ $325 Anton Bauer Plates ~ $220 'Monitor' Female Lemo ~ $40 Add'l Parts & Labor ~ $250 Even after buying an SSD, I think it was all under $1k. Plus some blood, sweat and tears of course.
  10. Thanks Mitch - to be fair I took it all apart, got all the parts and drew it up, then outsourced to Siggy over at Clairmont LA. He does great work.
  11. Thanks to Mitch, Alan and everyone else for blazing the trail on this mod - so excited not to be doing the footage acquisition dance and paying off DITs anymore :) Only thing haven't been able to test yet - is the SDI Start/Stop Flag working for everyone? Trouble with any specific cameras I should be aware of? (i.e. Epic?)
  12. We were going to use the prototype on a project the other month, so ARRI Germany passed the specs on to Burbank for me. No guarantees it hasn't changed since the prototype, but as of Jan 30th it was an FGJ.2B.308.CYMD72Z. Pins 2,3,4 were GND and 6,7,8 + Pins 1 and 5 are not used. They think I had the first power cables in the US, they didn't even have an XLR version for a block battery!
  13. Possibly flying the Amira prototype next week - ARRI Burbank's trying to get back to me, but does anyone have the new power connector pin-out? Would love to avoid on-boards or a mess of cable through a 3-pin XLR adaptor. Thanks, Ben
  14. Ended up getting the Cam Jam and mounting it on the Pro monitor arm. Haven't been rocking it long, but it's very rigid. Very happy with it. That being said, I haven't used the Quattro.
  15. Hey Bruce, Is this located in Toronto? (Canadian dollars?) What's the biggest package you've had on it comfortably? I see they have a maximum weight, but also a recommended weight limit. Any problem with service now that they're out of business? Thanks! Best, Ben LA, CA
  16. Grayson & Matthias - Would you say that you get less vibration with the Quattro rail system than with the Cam Jam on the pro spud mount? Thanks for the advice.
  17. Is anyone mounting the new SmallHD High Bright on a Pro Monitor Arm? I haven't been able to find any good mounts that go to a Pro Spud. Pro doesn't make one and I've left multiple messages/e-mails for Howard at MK-V without hearing anything back. What are you using? If there aren't any good solutions, is there any interest in having Pro make a custom CNC'd batch? Thanks everyone.
  18. Don't know exact details, but was on a job where the cable was wired for Genesis and didn't power F65 correctly (powered body, but not accessory ports or some such). BJ McDonnell would know more on this, but make sure you test ahead of time if possible.
  19. Didn't see anything about this in the archives and wanted to get some seasoned peoples' thoughts... Since the dog days of summer are upon us (at least in LA), I've been thinking a lot about how to stay cool, especially when it's over 100° F. Besides the obvious 'don't over-exert yourself,' 'hydrate,' 'seabreeze bandana on your neck,' or 'just don't do it' sort of stuff, has anyone had any success with cooling shirts or vests? Something like this - http://shop.coolshirt.com/c/athletic-systems_garments_moisture-wicking Paired with one of the two of these - http://shop.coolshirt.com/p/porticool-1-kit/athletic-systems_portable-systems?pp=12 http://shop.coolshirt.com/p/round-system-10-qt/athletic-systems_cooling-systems?pp=12 I'm thinking the tubes might be pinched under a vest and/or it's just too much gadgetry. I feel it's a small price to pay if it keeps you comfortable and makes the load feel a little lighter. Thoughts?
