Well, I've been running the segway for 3 years now and I've come off of it 4 times. None of those events are pretty. They happen in a split second, kind of like being in a car accident just uglier…lol…that being said, when you come off of the segway, it's usually because the segway has hit something that stopped it and your body continues in motion. Hanging onto the steadicam arm is the trick, it will certainly move with you and you can keep the camera from hitting the ground but it's ugly and will certainly pump some adrenaline into you. If you're running a system like this where you would literally jump off of the entire rig, you're operating in an environment that you probably shouldn't be. Flying the steadicam on the segway has additional risks associated with it and every operator should recognize that. The other side of that is the risk vs reward and should be an educated decision by the operator. It's certainly not for everyone, but it is for me. I mainly do travel and tourism promotional pieces and we work in a pretty controlled environment. I've never stepped on the segway from the front, only from the back. As a matter of fact, I can manage the entire system without an assistant.
