  1. Hi all Ultimate owners,

Next Wednesday I will get my new Ultimate and I'm exited like on Christmas Eve. Due the fact that the Ultimate has the X-Y on the bottom of the sled I was wondering if this has changed your set up routine. How do you handle the different weights of lenses, e.g. on 435 where the lens mount is not aligned with the CG of the camera.

Did the different concept of the Ultimate change your work in other aspects?

  2. Neal,

I had a similar situation and the PRO arm is vulnerable to sand. The sand sticks on the bolt that compresses the spring and gets carved into its plastic guide. The arm works still like a charm but makes a hell of a lot of noise while booming. Replacing the plastic solves this.

Remember when you can see the sand the sand sees you. ;-)

  3. Hi Peter,

I second what Erwin stated above, just adding another reason to avoid it.

With the regular 400ft mags the camera will become extremely back heavy.

I used the 535B with 100% top, regular mag and Hawk C-series lenses on a student short, a steady mag wasn't available that day - favor for the DP. It punched me into the ground.

The distance between the topstage and camera base was suboptimal. They overlapped only 50%. This resulted in vibrations that reminded me of a doorway dolly. With spheric lenses chances are good it will be worse.

Sitting in a screening room watching this shot is embarrassing and again it punches.

  4. Hi Tamara,

I can only recommend to have the sled neutral. When hard mounted you have no immediate control over acceleration, changing directions and speed like soft mounted or on a handsfree. Therefore you are not able to compensate the pendular movement of your rig in the same direct way. You are always to late. Having the rig neutral solves this. Because your are not moving and navigating by your self you can fully concentrate on composition, operating and keeping level. Antlers are also of very great help.

  5. Ulik buys the segway regularly. IMHO it was a lot R&D and new software to make it work. He has to give a 2 year warranty on the handsfree. The original warranty expires after removing the first part of the segway for the modification and I think he builds/sells fewer quantities then segway. It is not intended to be a mass product like the segway. So there are reasons for the 300% increase.

I agree, there is no point in complaining about the price.

    Time will tell.

P.S. I don't work for Ulik, but we had a detailed discussion about this.

  6. James,

I work at MSNBC and will do what I can to get all the info on this story from archives.

I didn't even know we covered anything on GB, shows how much I watch what we report....

    Be back soon with more.

    Chris,

this was or is part of a docu about Garrett. I've seen it once on TV. Sadly I missed the beginning. It was great fun to watch Garrett showing inventions out of his racks in his shop.

Maybe you could get hold of the whole docu and make it downloadable?

Gordon, I've done the same. I reduced it to 3,5 MB but I don't know what the folks at MSNBC think about making it public.

  7. Jeff,

thanks a lot for the picture and insight! What does the Zoe 3 feels like compared to the big rockers from Sony or Panasonic. I have a Zoe 2 and I never got decent response around the zero point. It doesn't start the zoom very smooth regardless what kind of lens it is plugged in.

I would still like to pursue a pressure sensitive control at a future date but I didn't want to hold things up any longer.

Jim, Please dont waste your time with pressure sensitive stuff, this system just is not very good for Steadicam, the analog feel of a rocker is much better if this unit is to mounted on a gimbal-yoke. We use to much force with the zoom hand while controling boom height and the rocker thing is easier to feather. In general, I dont think the pressure sensitive units, such as microforce, have good feel. I should send you a photo of the mod I made for the Zoe, I mount with a rubber microphone clamp instead of the supplied long screws. This give a nice clean feel, easy on and off, no silp.

You know my order is in, I cant wait.

    So I've moved it.

Jeff, can't wait to see your modification.

Jim, does your zoom unit work with all whatever-rocker-style-zoom controls?

  9. The Murphy Cart is an option as well. IMHO it is one of the greatest replacement for a stand. Most of the time my stand stays in the car. I only use it when the terrain is to rough for the cart. In the base is enough space for most things you need on set. I added a magic arm to it, to lock the post and secure the hole sled. This way the hole package can be carried over stairs or just wheeled on the two pneumatic tires.
