  1. Eremy,

my apologies. You where right it IS ABOUT PAL and NTSC.

I phoned a technician at Arri Munich who rebuild 50 Sony TVG receiver units to make them PAL compatible. He told me that the PAL and NTSC signals not only differs in in channel separation generating the channel offset, it's also different in it's modulation which frequency is used for color, picture and sound. The modified tuners work with the Modulus because the Modulus transmits no sound signal and it sends the PAL signal over 6 channels. He recommended the TGV only short distance, for long distance it should be a regular PAL receiver.

I hope this makes sense and is right this time.

  2. Eremy,

with all respect, the Modulus transmits ever video signal PAL and NTSC.

The problem is not the Transmitter alone. It is the combination of both.

Every receiver where you can dial the frequency is able to receive the Modulus.

Only receivers working with country specific cannel/frequency combinations (it is not about PAL or NTSC) have problems catching the signal but it is possible to get a decent picture on a channel near by. Only here it helps that the Modulus is a dirty transmitter. Even the combination Modulus -> Sony miniDV GV-D PAL video walkman with the Sony receiver for japanese channels works.

    Thomas,

only the Transvideo receiver with Modulus/BG option match exactly the Modulus channels. Try to find the signal one to four channels up or down.

    My 2 cents.

  3. This reminds me of the comments made on this forum regarding Haskell Wexler's design of a pivotal shot in Road to Perdition, how he would never move the camera unless it was exactly what the shot called for.

A minor correction too. The name of the DoP who did Road to Perdition is Conrad L. Hall.

  4. What would YOU think would be more easier. Filming people sitting in banks one behind the other. And you have to walk them at one side. Filming with wide-angle at about 5mm and nearby, oder a litte more far away, and for it more focal lengh?

In general shooting long lens makes things a bit harder. The longer the lens, flaws in operating have a greater part on your frame. Except being off level is less obvious. I guess it is an Advent/Christmass TV-event where you can't sell the same shot all the time. It is less a question of what's easier rather then what's the better frame.

    Hope this helps

  5. Its like fast/slow/fast/slow and so on... (just litle, but i can see it).

What you are describing sounds like you are slightly swaying sideways when walking slow and taking the sled with you. When walking very slowly straight towards an foreground object the swaying of your body and sled moves the back ground slightly left to right. When passing by an object (closing in and moving sideways) the left right movement of your body becomes part of the tracking speed. It slows down or even stops your slow tracking and speeding it up again by shifting the weight to the other side. Because you are walking so slowly the mass of the sled tends to follow you more. There are two things you have to practice: first walking more deliberate, second separate your body movement even more from the sled.

Hope this makes any sense and sorry for the rant.

  6. The weight of the clip-on mattebox it self can have great effect on the lens. You can test this by exerting light pressure with one finger to the front housing of the lens and turn the gear. Furthermore a possible explanation may is Standard and highspeed Zeiss lenses have set screws in the gear ring. They connect the focus gear to the worm drive. Some times on comes loose and makes it way up and fills one tooth gap of the gear. They are very small and and often covered with "dirt" or old lock-tide and hard to see.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Hi Ben:

    I visited the link www.finishlineusa.com

but what model are you using?

(There are a lot of products)

    Best t all,

    Gus.

Go to link: "Products" -> bottom left "More" link: "Premium Grease"

Go to link: "Distributors" for nearby companies.

P.S. I'm sure but I think George Paddock uses the same stuff on most of his parts.

  8. Hi Guido,

  9. Thank you Chris for the insight. Something to think about and try.

For running shots I use a 2.5" light weight LCD that I mount to the mattbox or magazine for DJ. It enables me to run with the rig in a more controlled and natural way. I recognize obstacles (corners, door frames) earlier especially in Don Juan.

    Please keep us updated.

  10. Hi Chris,

dry is pretty much OK at the moment. Good to see you here.

The Transvideo format converter is the only standalone device I know of.

What LCD Monitor do you have for your rig?

A weight saving solution would be to take a LCD that supports a 16:9 or 2,35:1 conversion like the Transvideo 5.8" and 6.5" Rainbow or the Cinemonitor 3.

I suppose there are a lot more LCD monitors that natively support 16/9 like the Panasonic 7" TC-7WMS1 but I don't have manufacturers/vendors at hand.

P.S. I'm eager to know what kind of shots you had in mind when building your rig and what design you choose for your light rig.

  11. I hope it is ok to forward this message although I don't understand why it wasn't posted here. Anyway.

  12. That is my concern too, Larry, to many of these new -non-tape-  recorders have a less then preferred image quality and you are the first to say (to my knowledge) that the Mpg-2 is better then the Mpg-4.

MPG-2 is better then MPG-4. MPG-2 has a smaller compression ratio and a higher bit rate. MPG-2 is for DVD etc. and MPG-4 for internet streaming. The D-snap has a bit rate of 3 or 6 Mbit which is an average DVD bit rate.

    D-snap

    Hope this makes sense :-)

  13. Not without having a college degree in Electrical Engineering!!! Just kidding. It is possible as all things are, but it is not practical. You would need to monitor the voltage of the battery at all times and the amount of current being pulled from the battery. It's just not worth the time........

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

as it is my time I'd like to put in and I have the possibility to monitor the Voltage and Ampere I'm confident. Next time I lay my hands on a 435 I'll do some detailed testing.

  14. Paul,

You're right. I asked my distributor and he said 7A max.

How does or better should a Li-Ion battery electronics measure to protect the cells. Voltage or current or both?

When I tested my batteries with 435 I had a voltage of 32V at start up it went down to 25V somewhere between 120 fps and 150 fps and back to 28V at 150 fps.
