  1. My opinion is that the Steadicam (or any other stabilizer) isn't this option you are looking for. Whatever they try to do to "blend in", a steadicam operator will never be inconspicuous. In the stabilizer world, the cheapest cable will cost even more than your whole budget. I am not kidding. A simple monopod would be perfect for you, your arm being the "stabilizer".   5. I currently own the EFP HD 1.5" post and I need an upgrade since I'll be using heavier cameras from now on. I want to go for the CINE HD PRO, with a 1.8" post as well. I wanted to know how I could do all of this while selling my original sled because we're talking about big bucks, here. I have contacted Curt Schaller. Problem = solved! There are many companies out there, many great products. But one of the most important thing for me as an owner is service. When you go for an Artemis, you can be absolutely sure that you will get a VIP service, whoever you are. Curt Schaller is taking care of everything you may need. He's a great operator (so he knows what you are talking about) and he is the Artemis designer (he definitely knows what he's talking about!). Great sled WITH great service! What else could you ask for?

I personally think it's quite fair; the guy seems to be pretty much picky on what his demands (IMO maybe a little too much...), he seems to know exactly why he's doing it, and he consider doing this being a real favour for the eventual lucky client. He may be a new operator who needs a starter demo. Or maybe he's an experienced operator who didn't have the chance to work his rig for a while and needs to update his visual references. A production that knows the value of a good steadicam operator will be willing to pay for what its worth; β€œIt's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”― John Ruskin A good and experienced operator will never loose a GOOD gig to the profit of a new (or bad!!!) operator. Just my (and John Ruskin's) two cents.

  9. Hi guys, it was me and I did it all hand-held. Ok, ok, it wasn't me! I would personally put my money on a really good operator and some post-stab process; it's crazy what we can do in post these days. But since I'm not 100% sure, I'd like to ask a question to the Techno-Crane believers: just how wide can a Techno-Crane can be if we'd aim for the minimum? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I live in Canada do I never saw one (!) and I'm startingy research NOW!!!
  10. Hi Haris! First, I hope you're doing considering the situation of your country. I travel a lot for my job and carrying camera gears is some kind of routine for me so here's some personal advice: -If you want to use locks, you definitely need to put IATA locks (special locks that "only" custom agents can open with their special keys) on your cases. Of course, if someone working at the airport really wants to steal something from your luggage, nothing can really stop him...! Best thing to do: pack your stuff then take some pictures, get some good insurance coverage and cross your fingers! -Be prepared, you might need an ATA carnet for your equipment. -Always bring along a receipt of all the pieces you bring abroad. This might help you. -Try to put some parts together; you don't want to check in many pieces as most of the airlines charges by the piece! Take a look on your airline's website for more info on how many luggage (and weight) you are allowed to bring. You want to find out what can you bring with you as carry on; follow focus and small monitor are normally allowed. But you will be restrain with the number and size of your cases again. Good luck! P.S. I just finished a workshop at Sachtler, in Germany and there was one of your fellow Greek citizen, Filippos Filippakopoulos! For what I've seen, he will eventually be one of the best in your country!

  13. What's the best way to train a rookie assistant to become your spotter? Being an operator, I can pin-point most of the important aspect (for me) but I was wondering if there would be a guide/handbook/video on "How To Be The Perfect Spotter" or something like that ;) Otherwise, what are the first steps you use to train a rookie?

New stuff = waiting list! @ Mr. Briant Swanstrom; consider yourself lucky; I called Abel Cine and they told me the waiting was now even longer than your 10 weeks... @ Mr. Andrew Ansnick, you definitely had the best advice; living in Canada (yeah, I know, sorry...), the best and easiest way will be to get to the source! I'll let you know how goes my dark and forbidden quest ;)

I've been searching a lot and since I didn't know where exactly to post this question, "General Discussion" looked the best place (moderators, please move it anywhere you think it belongs...!). I know there are several used Preston's kit for sale on this forum but I'm actually looking for a NEW system, more precisely: -Preston Microforce Digital Control II (1210) -Preston DM-2 Digital Motor with Integral Bracket (4201a) -Preston Y cable Anton/Bauer No good news from AbelCine (3 to 5 month waiting list), I even spoke with someone directly at Preston yesterday and they told me the waiting list of distributors was pretty long, most of them waiting for stuff they already reserved for clients who made a deposit. Does anybody knows a place/shop/person with these item- new or used(but mint condition)- where I could FINALLY buy 'em??? Thanks in advance for your answers... P.S. Oh, if you DO know a place, please send me a Personnal Message; I do love everyone but I'd rather be the first and only one to get my hand on those. I promise to share as soon as my payment will be done :rolleyes: Cheers!
