I presently have both a WK GB Dual mount and the PRO vest but I've become very curious about the Exovest. I'm going to demo one in a few weeks just to give it a once over, it's the gear head in me wanting to try everything. Has anyone seen or heard of the back mounting system (not the third arm section) I've only seen the front mount design.

Decimator 1 with both stock DC power jack & 4 pin Lemo Video/Power (PRO wiring). The 0B.304 carries both power and the SD output signal.

Power and SD signal are inputed through the 0B.304 jack. I only used this once to record the output from an SD tap on a film camera to my Hyperdeck. It will convert Component HD to HD-SDI as well.

Just an update because there have been a few questions. This is a DIGITAL receiver with a 900mhz Bartech hand unit. I used this receiver with my PRESTON motors but it will work with most digital motors. It self calibrates like a Preston MDR.

I've had them made by both http://www.cablescience.com and XCS. You need to know your OD, coil length and lead lengths. Cable science won't do custom cores for an individual order so you'll have to hope they have what you need. XCS is obviously compatible with what we use but I'm not sure if Greg is still making custom lengths so you'll have to ask him.

I've used this as my breakout iris control for the last three years. I am finally upgrading my Preston MDR1 so it's not needed anymore. A little wear and tear on the Handset Wheel but In very good condition otherwise. Comes with 2 focus strips (only one in pic) both manuals and 2 spare right angle antenna for the receiver.

The Collet will unscrew but some manufacturers use lock tight on the threads. Try to safely heat up the collet to melt the lock tight (taking care not to burn the cable)

There has been some discussion recently about using UP/DOWN/CROSS converters to ensure having a usable video signal for your monitor. I own the new BM up/down/cross for this reason but have never used it. I'm curious if anyone has had experience cross converting an HD signal and if so what sort of signal delay is introduced if any?

** At one time I was planning on upgrading the HD electronics to match the PRO standard but decided since it was unnecessary for me I never bothered. I however purchased all of the LEMO connectors I would need for this upgrade. 2 x 3B.FGG.856 for the post cable, 1 x 3B.EGG.856 for the lower electronics and 1x 3B.PHG.856 for the upper J-Box Electronics. Andrew, I've played with the HyperDeck quite a lot and have had the Rec trigger working with the Alexa set to Run Timecode on Rec. But the Hyperdeck will only work with the Alexa in this mode, it doesn't see the trigger embedded in the SDI if the Alexa is set to always run timecode - but some other recorders do. Perhaps in future firmware but it's not presently an option I can take advantage of!!

It actually does Start/Stop automatically but only recognizes the Panasonic protocol (used by RED I think) or can also be set to record on TIME CODE start/stop out of the Alexa. Problem for bigger shows using the Alexa is the time code is set to Always Run on the camera for whatever reason - something to do with the clock-its from the sound dept.

I also have a feeling that more file size options will soon be available as they've already expanded the options on the other two larger Hyperdeck models. These were released one at a time with the top end one first, a few months later the middle version and hopefully soon the Shuttle!!

Last year I bought the BlackMagic Hyperdeck Shuttle II hoping it would be the perfect onboard recorder. It was a great price and generally I've been happy with other BM products i've used, but in this case I was immediately disappointed by it's functionality and thought of it as a FAIL.

It didn't auto start/stop,

No onscreen menu or Clip control

Not enough compression options

Silly mini din connectors that I feared would break with every connect/dissconnect

The necessary SSD's are as expensive as the Hyperdeck!!

A rather comprehensive list of features that I would have deemed critical, and all in all I thought I was the wrong tool for the job. But since I had made the purchase and there was still hope that these shortcomings could be fixed with firmware improvements I endeavoured to make the deck part of my rig.

In my first attempt I mounted it to the back of the Cinetronic monitor

and it stayed here for the next few months.

I tried a using the recorder the best I could but the process of needing two different signals - The raw LOG C that I wanted to record and then needed to loop through the Hyperdeck and into the monitor for REC playback, as well as the REC 709 that I wanted on the monitor during shooting made the procedure cumbersome and a chore to maintain. Not to mention the fact that I had to remember to Start and Stop the recording, and in todays NEVER CUT world that wasn't easy. Forget about trying to find any portion of a clip you might want to see again - with no clip numbering or onscreen display doing anything from the Hypedeck is maddening. And truthfully the Alexa we were using has rather good playback options that are very easy to use once you get the hang of them, which made the whole struggle seem so pointless. Hell if I didn't want Video village to see what I was watching back I just had to turn off the transmitter and have at it. Even though the recoding process was a pain there were still shots that I wanted to archive and have for MY own reasons and watch on my own time. So what I started to do was use the Hyperdeck to record the takes I wanted after the fact. If there was a shot I liked or maybe I didn't like and wanted to keep it I would transfer it over to the Hyperdeck after the fact. And all of a sudden I liked the device again - I was getting high quality copies of what I wanted, and ONLY what I wanted. If the damn thing did start and stop with every take, just imagine all of the useless KEEP ROLLING crap that would be filling up the drive for me to then have to sort through later on my computer.

When I bought a new Monitor Bracket from Cam-Jam (awesome bracket BTW) because of the drop down offset design on the bracket I couldn't access the SSD card in the Hyperdeck without a little surgery. I started to be much more selective about what to record and then sort of tired of having to take the bracket off every time and soured on using the recorder at all. I kinda missed it, but didn't know where else to put it.

Now just very recently I purchased the new PRO Battery rack and I saw a chance to move the Hyperdeck to a VERY handy position on the battery rack where the third battery would normally go.

I'm now back to using the Hyperdeck again and have to say I'm not sure if I want them to add any of those features that I wanted before - other then maybe more file size options. I added regular BNC in/outs and I don't need an onscreen display as I only look at the clips on my computer after uploading. If it started and stopped on it's own the card would be full by the time the director had finished giving notes while we rolled. Boy do I pity the poor junior editors that have to filter through all the extra crap, why would I want to do the same?

Anyways, this is all just one man's opinion on how my onboard recorder became a nice addition to my rig and ultimately a WIN.

HD Upgraded PRO, MK-V Lower & Upper electronics with MK-V 2” 4 stage post

*Single dedicated HD line (using 1^st edition LEMO 856 with 1 co-ax), Comes with 2 HD upper J-Boxes each with an HD post cable – one with a 3B Lemo (1 coax, 12 pin) CAM/AUX/MON power lines run to upper J-BOX. PRO Battery Rack II W/recorder mount and 1 jumper, comes with both IDX and AB mounts. AB mounts presently installed. Mounts can be changed without any soldering – there are six colour coded banana plugs in battery position three for easy plate swaping. I’ve always found it’s best to use the rental houses batteries and having both styles comes in handy.

This Post & Electronics has served me very well for the last 5 years or so. I’ve since bought so many new parts that I’ve ended up with this as extra and have no need for it. The MK-V 4 stage post is great for super low and super high modes. I was never a fan of the MK-V electronics (hence the upgrades) but I have always liked this post, it is very rigid and well built. The current PRO design uses a 2^nd edition 3B 856 LEMO with 2 co-ax lines but personally I’ve never had the need for more than one.

I’d like to sell it al together but might be willing to split it up if I have a few inquiries about different pieces.
