  1. I had the tally wired on my DP 7. I can't remember how I did it, but It has to go through the composite video connection on the side of the monitor. This is difficult if you have a yolk because there is usually very little clearance between the monitor and the yolk. You need a right angle Hirose, and I don't think they make one. The tally lights are located on the back of the monitor so you can't even see them when they are lit. On top of that, the DP7 2.0.4 software upgrade disables the composite connection . I called Small HD about this and they said they were going to fix it. That was at least a year ago. I can't remember if it disables the tally, but since I couldn't see it anyway, I ended up getting the Zalex Tally from Peter Abraham. I am happy with the Zalex.

  2. Josh,

I sold my old rig last year to an op in Isreal. It turned out to be a giant pain. If you are shipping anything with a value over $2500 (approximately), the IRS wants to know about it to get their share of the taxes .

Even if you are not selling it, but returning it or shipping it for repair, and you list the value over this amount, there are a bunch of government forms to fill out. I had to go to the main UPS shipping facility four times because no one knew how the paper work was supposed to be filled out. The easiest way is to pay a professional import/export company to do this for you. The last time I used one of these companies, they charged me about $350. That was 20 years ago, so no idea what the costs are now. I am not saying you should not make this purchase, but you might want to check with Fed Ex and UPS the types of forms needed for a return shipment.

  3. Brooks,

I've had a couple of situations when I could not get an HD SDI signal on my DP7. After a break from shooting all morning , I turned on the monitor but no picture. I rebooted but still no picture. I was using a Sony 800 fed into a powered HD SDI splitter. One feed to a microwave and one to the monitor thru the sled. I had been using this setup for a week with no problems. I re-powered the splitter, re-powered the monitor and picture came back. It happened a couple of days later with the same setup. I reset the splitter/monitor and the picture came back. I wan't clear if it was the splitter or the monitor.

On anothe note, the recent firmware upgrade 3.0 and 3.01 ... have disabled the analog input. I was on a shoot with a 5D and couldn't get an analog signal. I ended up downgrading the firmware to 2.04 in order to get a composite signal.

  4. I got the DP 7 standard brightness about 6 months ago. I never noticed any delay or refresh rate issues, but I found the pixel to pixel function almost usless for focus. The video artifacts and tearing is so great that it is actually harder to tell focus on pixel to pixel. This was on the Sony 800 XD cam, not the highest resolution camera, but it shouldn't look as bad as it does. Has anyone noticed this with the High Bright model?

  5. I have the DP7 and I find the level pretty much useless for steadicam. You can use it to static balance, but as soon as you move it freaks out as William says,

and takes forever to return to home position.
