  1. So I was talking to a friend the other day who was mentioning how good a trip to the chiropractor went, and I started to think I should really be hitting one up. Does anyone have any tips/ advice about visiting one? I can't imagine we would be too different from normal folks going in. Also if anyone has a recommended chiropractor I would love my first visit to be with someone who I've heard good things about.

  2. I am very confused about how steadicam operators believe these pieces of equipment are interchangeable. I've been operating for two years or so, tried both and believe it is very obvious that steadicam is superior. The MOVI is a cool invention, that takes 3 to operate, relies on arm strength so you would need more than one person trained to use it and will only hold as much as your arms can carry.To a producer this means you have to pay more people to use it on set. The only advantage it has over steadicam is the compact size. You'll never see a 3d MOVI rig or any camera with a fat enough lens on it. Can we all just look at the facts and agree that steadicam is most likely going to win this fight, if MOVI can even get the support it needs to stand a chance?

  3. Here's what you do:

     

    1) Tell production that you have a follow focus

    2) Tell them the rental rate = x

    3) Sub-rent a follow focus for < x

    4) Profit

     

    I did have this idea already, but once people find out that I rent things can get a little off. Perhaps I'll try being more adament and straightforward about it. Great minds think alike, assuming both of our minds are great. Thank you for the advice.

  4. Hello all, I am a steadicam operator who is still somewhat fresh to Los Angeles with a steadicam flyer LE. So far things have been a little slow but I am getting there.

     

    The one thing that seems to drag me down into the mud over and over again is follow focus issues. I have lost more jobs than I can count because I simply can't afford to just go out and buy one. I took a minimum wage job at a studio to subsidize my income until the steadicam can provide at least minimum wage earnings. I've tried setting up my rate so that I can rent one for each shoot out of pocket, but since I cannot consistently have one handy it shows in my reel, who in turn will turn me down.

     

    Does anyone have any sort of advice on the matter? This literally eats at me every single day, sometimes makes me depressed about the whole issue. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point, but I love steadicamming way too much so I have no intention of ever giving up. I've considered taking out a loan, but I'm afraid if things go sour I wouldn't be able to pay off the loan without starving.

  5. wow, completely forgot to check this thread for a week or so. Everyone thank you so much for all the information, there is a lot of talk about union joining that contradicts other things you hear so it can be a tad confusing at first. You have all been fantastic human beings.

  6. Hello, I'm a fresh steadicam owner/ operator in LA who is considering joining a camera union, but am unsure about which union treats steadicam operators the best. Has anyone joined a camera union, and has experience with your membership you feel is worth sharing?
