  1. Selling 3x full sets of used Jerry Hill PAM Motor Bracket Kits for Preston motors. They are all 19mm arm size. Each set includes a motor rosette, D-Clamp and arm. Everything is in very good condition with very minor cosmetic wear and tear.

    I am also including a 5/8" arm size that's been shortened to by 1".

    Only willing to sell the whole lot together, not willing to break it up.

  2. Currently on a production using the Alexa 65. Can confirm it uses 24V. The back Anton Bauer battery plate has a built in up-converter that converts a 12V on-board battery to supply 24V to the camera. According to an ARRI tech I spoke with, the camera can run as low as 22V and still function safely. 

    So if you are looking to power the camera through your rig, ensure it can support 24V at up to 10 Amps. Currently Steadicam I work with just keeps the onboard battery on the back of the camera to power the camera. 

    As for the bottom plate, the Steadicam op had a custom intermediate plate made that connects the front and back. His usual Steadicam plate then get bolted onto the intermediate plate.

    FYI, the camera, with a Preston (MDR3), 2 motors, SmallHD 702 monitor, Cinetape, top handle, no eyepiece, onboard battery, Teradek transmitter, small prime lens, and LMB-5 comes in at about 56lbs.

  3. I think the problem with the blacks is just inherent with using an LCD panel and not an OLED panel. Even the "black" pixels are being backlit (and even more so with the Ultrabright 703). I'm still waiting for them to update the firmware such that I can assign toggling of peaking and focus assist with one of the physical function buttons.

  4. Any new comments after the summer period? How good is the anti-reflective screen protector? Maybe better use the anti glare screen? Any operators using it as their main monitor on the rig yet? Im still using the Cinetronic Gen2 and Im hoping for a monitor as reliable in visibility but with better image and color quality as well as better software and functions. Is this the right monitor?

     

    From my experience, now having owned the monitor for almost a year, it is quite reflective. As an assistant, it doesn't bother me too much because the problem really only crops up when you have a light source behind your head when looking at the monitor. And in those cases, I can always angle the monitor to remedy the problem.

     

    I really do love how bright it is, and the brightness can often compensate for the reflections. I rarely ever need a shade/hood over my monitor even when working outside in daylight.

     

    That being said, I can see this being an issue for a steadicam monitor. When you are doing your shot, if reflections become an issue, you can't just reposition the monitor on-the-fly to fix it. If the shot requires your rig to be at a certain angle or position, you can't just reach down and reposition the yoke mid-shot. But you can always put on a hood/shade.

     

    One other issue I had with the monitor is I've had needed two repairs thus far. One was for 2 dead pixels and backlight leak along the right edge. Another time, the monitor just refused to power up and required a new main board. But in both cases, warranty covered it, so I only had to pay for shipping back to SmallHD and they have been very good with customer service with regards to turnaround times.

     

    Sharpness and image quality is pretty good. It doesn't have the best colour reproduction, so don't use it for any colour sensitive work. I do like how it can take LUTs off an SD card, so if your camera is only splitting out a very flat image, you can apply a LUT to make it more contrasty.

     

    In terms of delay, I did some tests where I took a picture of the monitor hardwired to the camera (Alexa) photographing a timecode slate. It appears the delay varies anywhere from 1 frame to 10 frames with an average around 3 frames. I don't know why it varies, and I didn't have enough time to do a more comprehensive test.

  5. This is a bit off-topic from steadicam-related things, and more of a camera assistant thing.

     

    With the prevalence of of VFX heavy shows, assistants are often being asked to shoot VFX charts and grids. Often times they involve shooting it with all the lenses in the package and depending on each focal length, you'll need to move the camera to an appropriate distance to frame the chart.

     

    My question is how do you keep the focal plane of the camera centered and completely parallel with the chart?

     

    This problem also crops up when you are required to shoot a rack leader/framing chart.

     

    I can mount the chart on a wall. But there is no guarantee the wall is absolutely perpendicular to the floor. The floor you set up the camera on may not be perfectly flat.

     

    I can use a level and level the camera and the chart, measure each of their center heights. But how do you ensure you are at the center of the chart left-to-right (even at distances of 20 or 30 feet), and ensure the pan/tilt of the camera isn't off-axis to the chart?

     

    With film cameras, you could shine a light down the viewfinder and project the ground-glass on the wall. But you can't do that with digital cameras.

     

    So, I'm curious how other assistants have done it. What is the method to maintain relatively high accuracy while being practical and not taking 20 hours to shoot VFX charts?

  7. What is the boot-up time of the monitor? When you cut power to the monitor and restore power, do you have to push the power button to turn it back on (702 behaviour) or does it turn on by itself? Seems like the 'soft-toggle' behaviour is customary nowadays.

    It does not turn back on once there is a power loss and power is then restored. Like the 702, you'll need to press the power button again to turn it back on.

     

    The boot-up time is quick, very similar to the 702.

  8. So after loading the 1.5.1 firmware, I can confirm that the ghosting issues are gone. I'll take some pictures tomorrow that'll show if there are any hot spots. If there are things people want to see in particular about the 703, let me know and I'll take videos/images.

  9. I received my 703 last Friday. I did notice the same ghosting issue as Walter. But I'll try the new firmware tomorrow on set and see if that fixes the issue. According to the changelog, it appears the original firmware is not interpreting P vs PsF signals correctly.

     

    And to respond to Jacek, the monitor is quite solid. Appears to be milled from a single solid piece of aluminum. Besides the joystick and buttons, I don't really notice any plastic on the exterior. The display is Gorilla Glass. But I guess time will tell how strong it is once they get out on sets and suffer some abuse.

  11. Doubtful that the specs are correct, that means that the monitor at 2500 nits uses only 1 Amp of current, makes no sense, sorry. And heat will be an issue that they have to deal with, otherwise the life of the LCD matrix is reduced.

     

    The dp7 high bright uses already 24 watts

    You're right. That doesn't make sense. I guess we won't know for sure until someone gets their hands on one and measure the current draw.

  12. I spoke with David Bredbury from SmallHD this morning and he answered a few questions I had about the monitor.

     

    1. The 703 will draw about 12W-13W of power.
    2. Currently there are two 1/4 20 mounting holes on the back (one near the top and one near the bottom) and one on top of the monitor and one on the bottom. There are no holes on the side. They are working on a modular "cage" system that adds more mounting points.
    3. With the cage system mentioned, there will also be a shade available that can be mounted onto the monitor.
    4. The 703 uses a different molex connector on the back compared to the DP7-series. See the attached PDF file to see the wiring. David says the screw mounting configuration for the V-Mount and Anton Bauer plates should be compatible but for the Sony L-series battery plate, you may have to modify it a bit.
    5. Despite what videos on Youtube shows, the functions buttons can be assigned to specific functions and not just pages.
    6. Apparently heat dissipation shouldn't be an issue. They are aware of the heat issues with the 502 and David says this monitor runs cooler and it shouldn't be a problem.

    The Gorilla Glass screen surface is in excellent condition. Exterior of the monitor has minor cosmetic scuffs.

     

    Monitor is running firmware version 3.1.1 which has been discontinued by SmallHD. Current official supported version is 2.0.4. On the included SD Card, I've loaded all firmware version from 1.2.5 to 3.1.1 so that you can downgrade/upgrade firmware as you desire.
