  1. Hey Alec, That sucks bro . . . . . .I don't know who these "Guys" from LA are that they can fly out to do gigs for these sub par rates, everyone I know won't do a gig for any less of a rate never mind travel and do gig for sub par. I turned down a movie last year (4 months ) because they were asking for a "Flat Rate". I was told we were only going to work 4 out of the seven days each week but we all know what that means and yes of course someone else took the gig, I guess that is always going to happen and the best we can do is try to educate everyone we work with to do the right thing when it comes to matters of this sort. That being said, ask your DP friend who the guy is and then contact him let him know that you understand that he has to put food on the table but shooting himself in the foot and shooting others while he's at it shouldn't happen in the future. Thanks for posting your grief . . . . . the simple fact that we are here talking about holding ground is definitely steps in the right direction , in my opinion All the best . . .
  2. ------------------------ That away to stick to your Guns Steve . . . . They know what the steadicam and a good operator is worth and it seems like they are just trying to test the waters being that it's in KC and Not LA or NY. Chances are you'll get the call again and give you your rate. Every time I have called the bluff of a production company saying they can bring someone in for less, I tell them to use them or call these (10 other people) all of which I know will quote them the same rate as I did and inevitably, bingo, they are coughing up the rate. Good luck and good on ya. PS. you should also tell them how much per Diem and travel and housing you are saving them .. . .Dumb Producers !! . . .hahahaha
  3. ------------------------------------- Hey John, Try this web sight ( http://www.mk-v.com/efp_upgrade.html) they have a really cool Mod for the EFP. What monitor are you useing? To get mine to dynamic balance I re-machined the monitor bracket , made it slightly longer and use a transvideo 16x9 Ultrabright, so to offset the weight difference I use a small Ped Camera weight on the monitor side opposite the battery. It adds a little weight to the rig but the EFP is so light a little weight is a good thing. Good Luck
  4. Hi everyone Here is a few different steadicam friendly and not so not so friendly tele prompters .The transvideo one mounts directly on to the rails and works really well as you can see by my smile .There are many out there that mount off the handle which is fine when you are working off sticks but on a steadicam are useless. All ways have a prep day if possible . Good luck Louis Puli from down under B) ------------------ Louis, You have got to be kidding . . . .I don't know what prompter company said that you have to use that crap attached to your rig, but there certainly is a better system. Not saying that the equipment is crap just the set-up for the rig . . . . .it's really simple 7" LCD mounted to the upper handle or where the viewfinder normally is just above the lens, all under 1.5 lbs, forget the glass, it's two cables and one monitor. All the best
  5. I too need to mount a monitor to be used as prompter. I plan on taking the extra monitor cable which currently has a cigarette lighter plug on it- cutting that off, and terminating the end with a male 4 pin xlr cable to attach to the female 4pin xlr cable which powers the camera when triax is not involved. I figured out the pin assignments, but am concerned about the wattage. I am no electrician. The camera power cable is currently reading out at 12 volts and 17 watts. The monitor says on the back the input is 12v 1w. 1 watt seems very low to me, and im curious if anyone has ran into a similar issue. I have not been able to locate the monitors manual, and google has not helped me out yet either. thanks, ~Anthony ---------------- Anthony, Every show I am on has a prompter on the steadi, I have my own and it weight is minimal. The power cable just plugs into the 4 pin hirosi on the front of my rig. If you plug it into the side of the camera while using Triax or fiber the voltage is there to turn it on but the wattage won't keep it on unless it's a 4" or smaller LCD or at least that has been my experience. email on my home email address and I'll send some photo's if needed Peace Robvski@aol.com
  6. --------------------- Hey Norm, Hector is using a wireless HD configuration on NBC's :Dancing with the Stars" It is a fully controlled digital system. Along with this years improvements there is an addition to a the wireless , an analog return video feed. They have gotten it to be a very nice compact package. AVS is the owner and as the others have said very cost prohibitive to own if possible at all, but very rentable . . .Sorry I don't have the web site for you. Good Luck
  7. --------------------------------- George, also said the vest leather will eventually give way at the crimp in the (L) connection shoulder, the velcro will eventually fail all around, the nylon straps will eventually ware through at the spot where the connect to the spare. Also, my rig and a friend of mine had a catastrophic failure where the bottom post connects to the bottom of the sled at the brains, the aluminum actually cracked. Mine failed during a live show and I quick fixed it with giant zip ties to keep the bottom of the sled attached, borrowed a sled from a friend by noon that day and Tiffen actually had two of the bottom sections left and a week later she was all better again. (With the acception of the custom wiring that had to be done again) All the best
  8. ----------------------- I had this conversation with George Paddock and he gave me all the spots were his EFP and others have broken and or will break and yours was not and will not be the only one, acording to him . . . .I hope mine doesn't do that . . . . .yikes . . . .Jerry do you think I should reinforce my EFP vest there as well, even if I have never had a problem with it? Thanks for the heads up
  9. ------------------ Hey Dan, Did three months on the beach in Hawaii, FYI . . . .sand sucks . . . .But that being said, your subject matter will take away the pain. Make sure your AC is watching your back, I wore aqua shoes so that I could walk half in the water if needed and they always want them walking in the water or at least it seems that way. The wind became a big enemy so antlers come in handy and 4x4 if available. Other than that the fatigue factor comes into play slightly quicker since your working a little more to walk and run. Good Luck, say hey to Miss USA and Miss Bolivia for all of us . . . .
  10. --------------- Hey Collin, as Mr. Muhlstock said, this happened to me in Hawaii a few months back and it turned out that it was just a simple cable, but it wasn't until we tried all the menu items in the camera setting it to read specific voltage and different battery configurations. Calll if you like Say hey to the gang
  11. --------------------- Hey Dave, I haven't seen the picture that you speak of but I mount my second monitor under my existing monitor, but I have seen my buddy's Master with the monitor on top of his existing one and it is all done with Velcro. Both my monitor and his is a 3.5 inch LCD Good Luck
  12. Hey Matt, Got a XL-1 with all the extras . . . .?? . . . .crossing fingers you may want to get it out of my garage It goes on Ebay soon all the best
  13. LOL@CharlesPapert See Kareem, As I said in my personal message to you . . . . .in short, a bit harsh!! Others definitely agree
  14. ----------------------- Makeup artist on standby . . . LOL . . . .good advice . . .LOL . . . Maybe a POV camera with a wide angle lens or a fisheye attached to back of your rig or attached to your vest eliminating the whip pan might work better for ya . . .LOL . . Love to see the finished product . . LOL . . .
  15. ---------------------- Dan your just rubbing in the fact that your going to work with 6 foot tall goddesses . . .LOL . . . . remember to put the sunscreen on the front of your face and neck since you'll be looking up at the girls more often then down at your monitor . . .LOL . . . . Buen Provecho . . .LOL . . .
  16. ------------------ Hey Dan, Just for the record, Bullshit on the Miss Universe not allowing a utility/AC to be with you. I have done the actual show with Triax in Quito Equidor. They are notorious for cheaping out especially on Travel and Transpo. That being said it's just Trumps people penny pinching. Stick to your guns and they will come around. The usual guy won't do it because of these reasons and it's complete bullshit!! And as far as Zoom and focus rent or buy a stanton Zoom/Focus control, it's heaps better than that Zoe thingy and you have zoom and focus for Canon and Fuji. FYI, the utilities on the last Miss Universe made $55 an Hr. and since they were asking for it to be NON Union they charged 20% more. Fly safe and stick to your guns, again make it a safety issue and they will for sure get someone to be with you
  17. Heartily agree in that case. Even if it's just a Z1 on a Flyer, at least breifing the interviewer to 'cover your six'. :) Were you the only camera on the team? ----------------- Hey Matt, There was also a Jib on the gig, but each one of us always have an Assistant/Utility/AC with us at ? ALL ? times and sometimes more than one depending on the cabling needs, being that I do alot of Live multicamera TV (Triax and Fiber). So in the future you should always bid the gig with an assistant included or at least make sure they have someone there to cover you. Don't get the producers or clients used to a steadicam showing up on a gig without an assistant! Even if it's a Z1 on a flyer. your still doing steadicam and all the same boundries are there. Oh and briefing the interviewer to cover your six, not such a good idea, they almost always have other things on their mind other than making sure you don't step backwards into a fountain or a fence, and it's not thier job. If it's a budget thing with the client always make it a safety issue and they'll find a way to fit it into the budget. All the best Fly Safe
  18. ---------------- Hey Bryan, Ya . . . . I have used it , good to have in the kit for the price, but as others have said pure crap in the sunlight. Hopefully one day soon we will have the ultimate 7" Daybright, 1200 Nit HD/SDI/Composit Monitor.
  19. --------------------------- Hey Matt, Recently did the Detroit Auto Show, With a full HD rig, 30 Cars a day . . . .and you should most definitely have an assistant with you. If for nothing else safety for you and others, money well spent in my opinion and a necessity that the production shouldn't consider doing without. All the best Fly On.
  20. ------------------ Chris, I do believe your correct . . . . and once again the long unanswered question is, "where is the elusive, 7", Daybright, 16x9, HD/SDI/Composite monitor?" . . . . Hopefully, NAB will produce a breakthrough
  21. -------------------- The real question is not what to buy but, what NOT to buy . . .LOL . . . .as the others will attest, the spending and wondering what should be purchased next never stops . . . . . Actually it really does depend on what your flying most of the time. Specify that and what your hoping to be working on in 5 years and then we'll all get specific on your best friend ass !! . . .LOL . . . Happy Spending
  22. -------------------------- Oh Chris, lol. . . .hahaha . . . . . . .you friggin kill me! Jeff Foxworthy was telling me about you last night . . . LOL . . . . . . Robert Lorenz says now that your thumb is all swelled up maybe you'll get a ride home now . . .LOL . . . . Keep it dutch and Joe will never know . . .!!!
  23. -------------- Terry, Call me, I'll probably take it thanks rob vuona
