  1. On several occasions, when I was doing a crane walk off or walk on, I have used a single K6 gyro on the post. I like the results and everyone else seemed pretty happy too.

    Antlers are a great tool too, but just watch out for the actors heads.

  2. Jamie;

    It is a good idea to hold on to it. I did a shot on Criminal Intent walking down the isle of a bus with my back mounted vest and it was almost impossible. I was virtually sideways, with the rig out in front of me. The vest took most of the weight and put it in its proper places (not my lower back), but the sheer torque and clumsiness of the shot made it absolutely no fun at all. Not to mention that it took longer than anyone wanted just to figure out how to fit in to the space.

    That is what you get for not getting any scouts or information before the shot.......

    Keep the vest.

  3. The Docking rings have been sold, but I found another thing that I would love to get out of the basement besides the case.......

    1)I have an XCS Gimbal Sleeve that fits a 1.5" post. I don't need it as I have a 2" post, and I would love to see someone take it off of my hands. So if you are thinking about buying a fantastic Gimbal (the XCS Gimbal that is) and would like to save hundreds of dollars ( I believe the value of the sleeve alone is around $1000), give me a call and make some sort of reasonable offer or trade. I am more than open to listen to pretty much anything......

    And take the sled case while you are at it.!!!!!!!!! here is the description of it if you are interested.......

    2) I recently changed my sled case because when I went to my 2" post, with my Jerry Rig, the sled became too long for the case. So I (and my wife) would love to get the old case out of my house. It is a Encore ATA case, made with 5/16" framing, with fiber glass covering, two heavy duty latches, and 5 handles (two on each of the long sides, and one on top). The dimensions are 30 3/4" long, 26 1/4 wide and 10 1/4 INSIDE DIMENSIONS. Its is most definitely used, but in very good shape. The case has 1" foam all around the inside. I have no idea what to ask for the case, but I am more than happy to hear all offers, including trades for old Pelican cases. I live in NYC, so I think that anything outside of the metro region isn't a great idea due to shipping.

    The case is in good condition, and I would love to find it a new home.

    As I said, the sled is too small for me, but will fit a PRO sized sled just fine.

    I just want to find new homes for these things. Nice warm homes that will love and cherish them........... Ahem...........You know what I mean.

  4. I've got several things that I would love to get out of my basement. They are sitting around gathering dust......

    1) If you are thinking about getting a new style Gorelock docking bracket (Gorelock 2) or if you already have one and need extra docking rings for a super post or a second sled, I have two docking rings for a 1.5" post. I am more than happy to sell them as 2 for the price of one, or $85.00 for the both, OR best offer.

  5. TJ;

    I have to agree that the lack of a US distributor is a little disconcerting, but on the other hand, IMP has been more than happy to accommodate my needs and questions. Other than the distributorship, the monitor has worked wonderfully, and is a pleasure to work with.

  6. Not only has Jerry been humping the beast for 30 years, he has been teaching, and teaching well for quite some time. Not to mention that when I was down in New Orleans on a movie, several months before Katrina, Jerry was more than kind enough to lend me his Bartech when my went down. I was reminded at that moment, that this is a pretty great community of people, mostly out to help each other. Sure we argue and disagree, but in a pinch, we generally are out there ready to help.

    Thanks again Jerry and congratulations.

  7. I own a Hummingbird Blackbird and I am very pleased with its performance. It's similar to the MK-V version in that it has a frame line generator, is very bright, and has a PRO connector. It does not have the Analog style knobs and no heater. The cost however is very good relative to a TB-6 and to MK-V's version of the Hummingbird.

    Contact IMP electronics if you are interested in seeing one in comparison to the MK-V version.

    I hope this is helpful.

  8. At 3 months old, I would get in touch with Tiffen and find out what their solution is. The solution should be a long term one, and shouldn't really cost you anything by virtue of the fact that the arm is 3 months old!!!

    Not to sound too much like a consumer advocate, any time you spend several thousands of dollars on a product, the reliability of that product should be long lasting and the service should be willing and on going, as I am hopeful Tiffen's will be. The arm should provide you with great quiet operation for many years, and Tiffen should be proactive with their solutions.

    I look forward to hearing about what happens both with the arm and Tiffen's response to the problem.

  9. I am not a moderator, nor do I ever plan on being one. I think that I have opinions that are at least in my mind valuable to others, and I want to maintain my subjective voice. It seems to me that a moderator's position is to moderate and not to voice opinion. If a moderator voices an opinion, he or she cannot properly moderate, their bias showing through.

    I have read the Alien posts with great interest for a long time now, from the time Lynn Nicholson was deeply involved with his project to present. I have witnessed much of the tumult and tempest and I am very aware of how sensitive the subject is to many people. While I think that anyone who wants to voice their opinion regarding the Alien, or any other product for that matter has the right to, as long as that opinion is presented responsibly , I'm not sure that name calling is a proper approach.

    I'm not here to protect or defend MK-V or anyone associated with MK-V. To suggest that we not listen to Manufacturer's 'droids' in reference to the discussion about the Alien, begs the question as to who the 'droid in question is. It seems to me that the inference is directed at MK-V, and not all manufacturers, and as a moderator, I for one wouldn't use the term in this instance, and for that matter at any time in this manner. It kind of shows your bias, and as I said, it seems to me that a moderator should at least present a impartial face.

    Just my opinion.

    Now can we please speak nicely........

  10. Philip;

    I don't know what Tiffen is charging for the monitor, but I can highly recommend the IMP Blackbird. It is very bright, great for outdoor work and is weighted very well. I have been using it for about 2 years now and I don't have any complaints, and the price isn't bad for a daylight viewable monitor with framelines. You should also look at the Transvideo high brightness monitors. They are very light in weight, but I have been told that their pciture is good outside, and you can compensate for the lack of heft by adding a battery back on to back of the monitor.

    Both of these monitors would need a down converter when shooting HD, which shouldn't present a problem. I am personally avoiding HD monitors for now.

  11. I'm trying to get rid of things that I most probably won't use again (New Year's resolution).

    So here are some things to start with.

    2 - 1.5" docking rings for a Gorlock docking bracket. They were made by Jerry Hill, and they worked just fine when I had a 1.5" post. So if you are thinking about buying a Gorlock docking bracket and you want to save a little cash buy these. They are $42.50 each, which is 1/2 the listed price

    1- 1.5" PRO post clamp gyro mount. I just can't seem to stretch it around my 2" post, so if you have 2 K4 gyros, and want to put the second one on your post, or are thinking about getting a gyro or two, this could be a good deal. I am selling this for $200.00, which is also 1/2 the listed price.

    If interested, you can email me silverodt@earthlink.net

    Have a wonderful and happy New Year.

    Jamie.

  12. One more thing:

    Make sure that the receiver is working properly. Take all of the other RF devices off the of the rig or at least turn them off and test to see the range of the receivers. If they seem to have very little range (if the light turns red when you are not too far away from the rig), it might mean that they need to be looked at by Jim. If there is a problem, it's usually fixed with great care and very quickly.

  13. Dan;

    All of those options seem like good choices, with the exception of the throw out option. If you think that you are going to need them in the future for recelling then keep them.

    I for one believe that you can never have too many batteries in good condition. I also live in New York, where in the past it has gotten very cold, and battery life has diminished quickly. Trimpacs are great for director's monitors, or powering a receiver. If you have Gyros, they can be used to get them going while you are in the docking stand.

    Iguess from my perspective, if the technology isn't obsolete to you, then the batteries should be kept for recelling or giving away to an up and coming guy needing to save a buck here and there.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Jamie.

  14. Those with Masters Arms chime in whenever. Here is the scoop as I know it. Many years ago, Cinema Products made the Masters Arms with elbows that had a sharp cut in the angles of the elbows. Apparently, this shape lent itself to cracking under load. As a result, many of us,. at our own expense went to the trouble of getting the elbows replaced.

    I have had my Masters arm for 7 or 8 years (I have lost count), with the rounded elbows, and there is no sign of cracking anywhere. You should note that this arm has flown mostly 35mm cameras on the rig, and had all kinds of add ons as well (rain shields, obie lights, zoom lenses.....), putting the arm damn near its limit. Not a problem with any aspect of the arm under load.

    Had it serviced about a year and a half ago and it is a great arm still.

    So if you want to keep the arm, get the elbows replaced by Tiffen or Rob Luna and keep the thing clean.

  15. Recently Alec Jarnegin was bemoaning the fact that his new A&J case kept arriving to his NYC home damaged.

    Each and every time, UPS delivered the package in a different state of disrepair. The first time a large scratch, the second time, and actual hole in the case! Each and every time, A&J has diligently tried to undo the damage by trying to make it right, finally sending a brand spanking new case via FedEX.

    I went over to Alec's house yesterday, and I must say, I have never had a case of case envy before, but THIS is an awfully nice case.

    It was nice to see that A&J stood by their customer and made sure that he was finally satisfied.

    So the moral of the story is that if you want to really protect your sled (that vast investment, your meal ticket, your child's college education) well, it might just be worth the extra expense to get a really great case, with a precision cut foam insert that fits your sled like a glove.

  16. Charles;

    Regarding the Modulus 51 case....... I used walk around with my Selmer MarkVI in a nice foamy gig bag, until it cost me $600.00 to have it untwisted. The Pelican 650 case fits the PRO sled profile well, why not go with that option? And you don't have to wait for A&J to destroy several cases in the process.

    Jamie.

  17. I have had a Masters Green Screen, a Transvideo Cine, and I have finally arrived at what I consider to be a really great LCD (at least for me). I own a Hummingbird Blackbird, which is the unmodified version of what Howard sells. It's plenty bright in any kind of situation, it has mass ( about 4.5 Lbs.), and the viewing angles are not bad at all. I have had it for well over a year now and I have absolutely no complaints. And the price is very good.

    Just my 2.

    Jamie.
