  2. It really is great to hear such positive comments about the Tiffen equipment and customer service.

I have been a GPI user for more than ten years and my PRO equipment has been very close to flawless. The GPI customer service HAS been flawless! I waited for a couple of years before switching to a PRO rig (from a CP 3a) because I wanted to see what the (then) new CP gear would look like. At that time I felt there were very good reasons not to buy CP equipment - such as a 12volt system and my perception of poor quality control and poor customer service.

Over the past few years the Tiffen products have been improving constantly. The new Ultra 2 and G70 look to be world class products that would be as good or better than anything on the market. The tilting stage is something I would really like to have!

I really do think the PRO arm is the best overall arm available under all conditions, but I have been thinking about also carrying a G70 for cleaner environments such as stages.

The XCS gear is without a doubt first rate and I would not hesitate to work with Greg at some point. You have 3 really good options for top quality steadicam equipment now. We have never had it so good!

    Best of Luck

  3. Excellent, thanks.

Now, if a train leaves the Santa Ana station heading northwest towards Chicago at 62mph, and at the same time another train leaves 30th Street Station in Philly heading south for Atlanta, what was the pin configuration for the early MovieCam Compact bodies that got switched to 24 volts?

    :D

(Bonus points if you can identify the difference with Hand-Held Films bodies opposed to every other freakin' body out there..... )

  4. Hi Guys,

I have a Artemis Cine, and all I can say is that I'm more than satisfied with the rig and with the service I recived from Sachtler, and especially Curt! He always answerd to every email, and every quastion I sent him! The only problem I had with the rig is that they forgot to put in the packeage the Camera Plate screws, and they send it the next day, free of shipng charge of course!!

Regarding the voltage drop, this is normal on every rig! You cant expect to have the same runing time with the same batterie attached to the Camera directly, and powering the camera from the rig!!

Anyway Alf, what is the runing time of your camera with the batterie attached to it directly, and when the camera (and only camera, without the motors) is powerd with the SAME batterie from the sled?

    regarads, igor

I get a battery warning indication on the camera almost imediately when powering through the rig. I have never had this problem with an EFP, Master or Ultra.

  5. Tell me about it!!!

I've been trying to find out the price of an artemis EFP rig for 2 weeks now. Tried Sachtler asking for prices or dealers..... Bugger all!!!

It's like trying to staple jelly (Jello) to a ceiling.....!!!!

    Ant

Hi Ant, do you want to buymine?

  6. Still no reply from Sachler. Call this support !!!!!!

Hey Alf you got my private email why do you not use to talk to me, Curt :-)

Curt, if you readthe above,I did reply to you by email and I have had no reply. DO YOU CALL THIS BACK UP? I WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT THESE TWO ARTEMIS RIGS,I cant use them for video

  7. Hi Alf...

What configuration of Batteries are you using?

    Best,

    Gus.

I am using PAG 90's. I have my rig set up so that the Preston and and Monitor are powered from the monitor battery. The camera battery is feeding just the camera and the built in tally system.

  8. I have had major problems powering a video camera from my two Artemis HD rigs. I found that there was a voltage drop from the camera battery to the camera output supply lemo on the rig.

I sent a rig back to Sachler and they sent this reply.

Regarding the overall resistance in the rig.

After changing the complete wiring and electronic you got now the

lowest ohm number ever in an artemis rig.

Well comparing the direct power supply of an onboard battery with the

rig is not very fair, because the combination

of the length of the internal wiring, plus cam power cable, plus

sockets and connector will be about one meter cable in the end.

Of course this will add more resistance to the system than a direct

power supply by an onboard battery.

Because we have 12 lines going from sled to top

and the need to have an main plug in the center post,

the diameter of the single pins in the main cable Lemo plug are a bit

    thinner.

To have less resistance in the system, we would have to change to a 6

    pin Lemo main cable connector.

But with only 6 pins in the post, you will loose the HD Video support

and the independent power supply for video power out socket in the

    side to side module.

Camera's more than three amps (not that much) cant be powerd from the rig, because the cables in the post are too thin, because they need to be thin to fit in the post. So whats the point of the Camera battery on the rig or the camera power socket?

I sent this reply to Sachler.

    Dear Curt,

Thanks for servicing my rig, but I am now left in a very bad position.

I bought two of your Artemis HD rigs for shooting video only, and now I can only shoot video with an on board battery. Surely you should make it clear that the Artemis HD is only useful for very low power video cameras or for cameras with on board batteries only. An on board battery on a video camera makes the camera too long and destroys the dynamic balance and feel of the rig.

What is the point of the camera battery clip on this sled?

Can the loom in these rigs be replaced for the six cable type.

I think you have a very serious design fault with this sled. It is excellent mechanically but you have a serious problem with the design of the electronics.

I cannot find the specification of your rig. What do you quote as maximum current for camera power supply. I cannot get more than three Amps out of it.

You asked me what I a thinking. I am thinking that I wish I had bought sleds from another company to be honest.

    Yours sincerely.

    Alf Tramontin.

I have had no reply since February.

  9. I don't know how you guys up in Canada or any other cold parts of this world do it. I'm in Albuquerque ,NM right now working on a movie and it's freezing at night. What kind of gloves do you have that you can still feel your gimbal and keep your hands warm? What about batteries? I'm going through batts pretty quick. I've been throwing those little hand warmers in with my batts to try to keep them a little warmer but once I put them on the sled they cool down pretty quick. Thanks in advance for any info.

    Jon Myers

I found that shining a 2K at the gimabal when the rig is on its stand is a great help. I once had a gimbal completely freeze and lock up on a night shoot at -15 deg C.

  10. I am having trouble with supplying 12v power to video cameras with my Artemis HD Rig. The camera draws more power from a battery on the sled (camera battery) than the same battery connected directly onto the camera. No other battery or equipment is connected to the rig. I wondered if anyone has experienced this. I think it might have something to do with the battery level display.

    Thanks, regards

  11. Alf, welcome !!!

Thanks for joining in , I was hoping that you, one of the most productive/active operators in the European scene on high profile projects, would share some of your experiences here.

I saw some nice work on Harry Potter- Goblet of Fire - too!

Hi Rob, thanks for your reply. I have only just figured out out to get on this board, I have had many problems with login in. I am a bit quieter over xmas I hope so will join in the forum when I can, I need to catch up on gear etc.

  12. Just saw the trailer for "Doom". Looks like your typical fantasy, sci-fi action thriller. One of the larger marketing points of this film is the use of the "First Person Shooter" look that replicates the original video game, which I must admit, I probably spent too much time in front of 10 years ago.

Anyway, the few short FPS clips in the trailer do look like the video game, and also look a lot like the robbery scene in "Strange Days", with the hands and weapons right in front of the lens. I'm wondering if these shots were done on Steadicam or if they're entirely CG. Anyone have any insight?

    Peace,

    Afton

    Halo Afton,

I'm was steadicam operator on main unit, all movie incl. details was just steadicam, every day for three month. Main part Fps sequence is one shoot, has been done by Alf Tramontin, gun has been put there in post.

    Cheers

    Jaromir Sedina

    Hi Guys!

Yeh I worked on the film for only 11 days. Had great fun with Jon Farhat, the FPS director. The FPS sequence was intened to look like one shot but the 1st unit director decided to chop it. Political for sure.

I had nothing to do with the 1st unit!!

    Check this out...

    http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2005/doom.htm

By far the most enjoyable element of the film is a three-minute, first-person clip of John Grimm fighting his way through hordes of monsters that is meant to replicate the feeling of playing the game. And boy, does it. The high-adrenaline scene had the audience cheering and clapping throughout and was just the kind of edge needed to make ?Doom? feel unique from all of the other space Marine action films currently collecting dust in the back corner of Blockbuster.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/revie...t_id=1001349219

But the most effective part is the one scene where it adopts the first-person perspective of the game: The camera takes Sarge's POV as he picks up different weapons to kill mutants in a good approximation of the gaming experience. A subjective POV is rare in mainstream cinema, and it's a striking, if gory, watch. Apart from that sequence, the action is surprisingly uninspired.

From AintItCoolNews: "Who put those cuts in the FPS sequence?"

    http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=21611

Strangely enough, the FPS sequence, while still really neat, comes off a little awkward. There are these really jarring cuts in sequence. I could have sworn that this didn't happen in the Comic-Con footage they showed, but there are at least 3 cuts that really don't work, pulling you out of the flow of the sequence. They don't even try to hide the cut in a blurry pan or anything. But when it works it still really works and they put it at a really great part of the movie so it's not an out and out gimmick.
