  1. hey michael, i have an artemis rig as well, and i can acheive DB in a matter of minutes,i start by finding the CG of the camera and then i place the wedge plate a little off dead center on the post, now i try for a drop time of about 2 to 3 seconds,1st lowering the bottom section and if need be raising or lowering the gimble, now i put the rig horizontil and turn it to its side where the lens is say pointing at the wall, then i let the rig drop seeing if the rig falls more towards the battery side or the monitor side and then adjust accordingly, that gives me an idea of where my DB is at,also look into the jerry halloway primer balance techniques on the forum here or on the tiffen website, and like myself go for the workshop l

    Hello,

my problem is, that i can not get in dynamic balance (not in static balance too) with my rig (an artemis efp), although i can adjust the battery. Maybee you can help me:

The trouble starts when i try to hold the rig in static balance. When i tilt the camera looking down (in front) for expample to make the dop-down-time-test, the camera wont get back, so it is strait hanging down. It stays a little looking down. When i do otherwise, the camera tilt looking up, it doesnt stay straight hanging down again, it stays a little bit looking up.

Same thing with tilting left or right (for dynamic balance). Now the righ stays hanging litle left or right, depending on which side i make the tilt.

My drop down time is usualy for working about 5 seconds or more. but i tried this also with a drop down time of 1 second. I tried it with different cameras AND mounting plates (Sony and Ikegami).

My explanation at first would have been that the problem is the camera. But in all 4 directions? I took notice of this just a few weeks ago.

Has anyone an idea for me?

    Thanks a lot

    Michael

  2. the stanton zoom focus control is such a treat to work with,it can really be very creative in any situation, but i have had to modify mine to fit the gimble and had the same problems with the lens creeping until i found the right pot,and the only other problem is the screw that keeps the zoom focus handle tight to the part that attaches to gimble likes to come loose during operation, can be a real pain in a live situation,so i added a lock type washer to that screw and it has cured the problem, other wise those small things it works great, and i have gotten so use to it that it has made my rig more comfortable to operate morgan

  3. I used the SDX900 with a modulus 3000 mounted on top of the camera for about 10 hours with no problems. Maybe it's because you were a bit congested that day or I'm thinking you didn't talk nice to it. Nobody likes a pissed off Modulus!

well my apologies to cit modulus,it was the playback deck that had the congested heads,so alittle cough medicine and some good ol' alcohol and a a nice pat on the back and it was all good!!!!!!! thanks chris and aloha

  4. just wondering if anybody has experienced record interference on a sdx 900 while using a modulus 3000,the transmitter was located at the back of the camera,i replayed the tape and it was full of digital breakup, like lots of different bars running up and down the screen,i used the same camera 2 days prior without the transmitter and had no problems,so do you think it was the transmitter or the record heads went into the crap*#^% MARK"HEADS GONE WILD" MORGAN

  5. hey guys please excuse my stupidity, but what is the name of the connector for the focus power on the upper part of my sled,i need to purchase a couple of these to operate my zoom and focus control,it has 2 pins with a half shape circle inside it's not a 2 pin lemo because the one i have doesn't fit,it's for the artemis efp pro rig

  6. Dan,

As you get to know your sled, you'll have a good idea of where things should be pre-set for any given configuration allowing you to achieve dynamic balance quickly without prolonged math.

I couldn't agree more. Many of us have struggled for years to get to know our sleds to the point where we can effortlessly communicate with them on a daily basis. God knows I tried all the old tricks and read all of the best books on the subject- Zen And The Art of Steadicam Maintenance, Five Steadicam Shots You Will Do In Heaven, The Seven Sled Tricks of Highly Successful Operators. I finally found the path by reading a slim little volume by Herman Hesse. It's called Sleddartha, and I highly recommend it. Only through careful effort can you truly get to know your sled.

If the high road approaches fail, woo it with teflon lube and a fresh set of gimbal bearings. Some sleds are queens, some are whores. Know your sled. :D

p.s. He's right. Re-read the primer, and don't get ruffled that it doesn't make sense. It DOESN'T upon first blush, but the physics and applications are sound, and will work no matter what rig you own. Contrary to some vicious rumors, one can dynamically balance a Flyer. I did it two weeks ago at a workshop in NYC. Assuming you can X-Y at the top, you can balance the thing up. I never tried but suspect it woulda been a bitch to dynamically balance my Model I with only an X top stage, and a side to side shifting battery down below........

looked on amazon could'nt find the book, sleddartha could you please point mre in the right direction,i love knowledge, even that i don't have a problem with my DB. mahalo for dakine help if can

  7. Another thread perked my interest about rain covers. I talked to the guys at PortaBrace today to see if they would be interested in designing custom raingear for my rig, and they said they would consider it (depending on the demand.) I also talked to the folks at Camera Essentials about the same thing (I know they already have designed some stuff.)

I'm curious to see how many of you have raingear for your rigs?

? Does it do the job?

? How well does it interface with the camera's rain protection?

? If you were re-designing your own, is there anything you would add/change to improve it?

I hope this turns into an interesting discussion.

    Thanks!

    Dave

"petrol" makes some very nice raingear

  8. Wow, as stated I was in Hawaii last week.

Mark, if I knew you, I would of looked you up.

We stayed in the Hyatt in Maui and at the Kahala off of Waikiki on Oahu.

The wife tells me the PCH deck holds quite a few people and

has outside (read: plastic) tables and chairs so they are

easy to move around and fall on when drunk.

Sadly I have a reputation to uphold at Gladstones and can't

embarrass my wife and myself because many of her employees know

me. But I can capture images of you all with my tiny Powershot camera

(it's small so you wont' see me take the pictures... :P )

By the way, some of the servers at the restaurant are also pretty cute

and some single...if anybody is interested in one of them, let me know I'll ask my wife

if she's available. Sorry, I don't do man-gay hook ups, not that there's anything wrong with

that, but two females and I'm all for that hook up.

I'll have my wife reserve the deck for us

aloha michael, wow that would have been very nice to have met you and your wife i actually live by the kahala area, cinegear would have been nice but i blew my funds at NAB so maybe next year i'll do cine as opposed to nab, plus gladstones sounds like fun, well best to all,i hope to meet you some day it will be an honor aloha, morgan

  9. Bo - thanks for the update. I think using Steadicam on the sidelines is a great idea - very dynamic and definitely enhances the experience. I'm enjoying the Steadicam shots as much as the games! Let the other ops know we're cheering them on as much as the teams playing.

    USA over Ghana!!!

    Dan

i have to agree the shots are really bringing something into the homes of the viewer, and i have to say that the people who hire me for sports are watching these very kool steadicam shots, and can't wait until our soccer season begins, the world cup has opened some eyes, thanks guys i can pay my rent now LOL you guys plain rock, best wishes

  10. well i have to give props to bj,i met him here in hawaii last week took him surfing in some semi well overhead surf, new swell " lots of water movin around" and to top it off he was hung over,he handled like a champ, and i think he had a big cut on his foot from the reef the day before,so i don't think the rocks are goin to phase him as much as the reef did that day,so bj just take your shoe off and hang over the meat rack at the rhino

ooohhhh...steadi vomit, hot chicks, romantic sunset with all the other operators, i'm in. outside deck it is. if we are there early enough, maybe i'll give b.j. his first kiteboarding lesson. we can all sit on the deck and tip our drinks to him as he gets dragged downwind accross the rocks. hot chicks love wounds. all who say we sacrifice b.j. to neptune to attract the hot chicks, say aye.

  11. aloha and thanks for the input, yes i have been lookin into workshops,i am rather excited to go to one,so that i don't pick up any bad habits, and yes i practice alot with the junk rig that i had, to the new one i have gotten and oh what a difference it makes,i know there are 2 day workshops and i hear about a 6 day workshops, but i can't find a schedule for a 6 day event

First we use our real full name as our screen name here, Please change your screen name to reflect that.

What is your experience level? Have you taken a workshop? If not I suggest that you do. is your rig in dynamic balance? if not get it in balance. Then practice... A lot

Drop time is a personal taste issue, my rig is neutral, as in zero drop time. some people use one second, most use three

  12. just by chance have you tried the artemis by sachtler,or heard anything about this rig,i was at nab and i tried on rigs back to back and this rig felt like butter and was very comfortable java script:emoticon(';)',%20'smid_14') ;)

    Dave,

I know for me, I always look to the manufacturers that continually raise the bar (Tiffen, PRO, XCS, Klassen to name a few). They innovate and push their competition to improve. Glidecam got into the game a long time ago by producing low-end crap that boasted not an original thought. Yes, lately they are trying to get into the higher end market with the Gold, etc. I understand this to be a decent rig for the money and very functional. In my mind though, I'd rather support the companies that are continually pushing the envelope. That is a personal choice. Paul Magee (hey Paul) is spot on with his comments as usual.

    Just my two cents.
