  1. "While you are waiting to buy a rig you can ?practice? by operating a camera on a tri-pod, dolly, or hand held. Remember a Steadicam Operator is a camera operator! Composition is the most important part of are job. A steadicam is one of the many tools we use." Phillip's advice goes along with something else for you to consider: AFTER investing in a workshop to see if you get bitten.....perhaps try to source out some work at a broadcast station that uses steadicam as part of their daily operations. That sort of opportunity gives one paid experience, and while improving skills, the potential ability to save for a bigger rig. With regard to your question about "upgrading"....I think many would agree that it never ends.....but a wisely researched decision on your first big rig would be massively key to your first few years as an owner/operator....many of which D.G.E. mentioned already in this thread. Be creative...if you really want something, you WILL figure out how to accomplish....and yes, it can take many years before you buy your first big rig so try and realize the big picture here.....seek advice from any local veterans who are willing to let you buy them a beer and tell you their story......shocking fact...many steadicam operators like to have a drink and talk about our passion for this craft! Cheers!
  2. Uh....WOW! I'd be very interested in hearing the outcome Eric! Cheers!
  3. Putting it mildly.....I'm very eff'in excited about this new rig! Can't wait to hear some details after you fly it Andrew!
  4. Just curious...... anyone know if the Betz plate is compatible with the XCS Ultimate? Thanks! Bryan
  5. Hey Job, wondering if you have any updates about speaking with Bebob about the Zoe modification to work with all lenses? I'm sure there are a few of us on the forum who'd be interested to know what can be done so we can keep using our Zoe ENG remotes. Thanks! Bry
  6. Excellent Job! I'm curious, did you ever get a chance to perform a one-shot with your AR? Bry
  7. Hey Job, How is the reception on those little casio tuners? I looked at some on the casio website and the models I saw were housed in an awkward way, and I've been told the reception, especially in a studio with lots of bounce isn't the greatest. Curious to hear your opinion. I'm considering buying Lentequip's tandem receiver to work with my Canatrans to receive the wireless program return signal and feed it to my existing program return lcd. http://lentequip.com/products/tandem.html
  8. I really want this monitor.....but after reading above that there's going to be an in-monitor digital recorder, I'd be willing to wait for that version. Would anyone have insight as to when this upgrade might become available? Bry
  9. Hey Guys.... Many thanks for your words of encouragement. I consider it an honor to receive some thumbs-up from people I consider to be top dogs.....yes Rob you too...haha! Perpetual Respect to you all. Bry PS...Jeff....I so agree with your comments.....was swearing at myself during the shot when I saw the bit of shadow, and in rehearsal they dissolved away from me much sooner at the end frame.... so a rack focus would have been the money there, as well to allow for a slightly different dissolve point. All little things that make me strive for MORE next time.

    One Shot

Hey all, Thought I'd share a link to my first one-shot steadicam take on live tv. Forgive the YouTube quality, haven't received the dvd copy yet. I think I was a tad smoother in dress with the backwards step down off the stage....but overall felt pretty good about it....tried to keep it a little organic. Cheers!
  11. Hey Y'all, I DP/Steadi most of the MTV Canada Cribs. Of course, I find all the same challenges you've mentioned. We shoot on Digibeta and I too constantly re-white balance for each room at 4300 on the filter wheel for interiours. I rig a LitePanel to the camera for talent's face during the tour. As well, I turn on every light in the house, but when needed I ceiling bounce a Mole-Fay (daylight) from behind a door or wherever least obtrusive....it's just the right amount of kick, especially for small-medium sized rooms. I also have the Bartech but have custom rigged the gimbal mount focus module and put the MONE motor on the iris ring, set the camera so I can see the F-stop display in my monitor, and I roll my own iris from room to room....using a wide lens, pre-setting the focus marks. They never give me a 1st who's into pulling wireless, so that's how I get through the day. Sometimes for really tight spaces I'll keep my front mount harness on standby, but generally get through most narrow doorways and staircases. We generally don't overshoot too much because the director/producer forms her ideas for the story quite well on the day, so I generally don't shoot more than 4 tapes on the A camera. My fav celebs are usually the pro skateboarders cuz they always give me weed at the end of the day after they see me sweating. : )
  12. Today I was shooting a doc in a Hindu Temple where no one is allowed to wear shoes. I've never op'd barefoot before and was not crazy about the idea at all. I decided to give it a shot, since if I refused, they'd not have the money shots they wanted.....and I was working with/for "friends". At first, the cool marble under my feet felt real nice, and then about 30 seconds later I missed my Merrell's more than an addict misses their fix. First time I've been sore after a shoot day in a long time. No shoes + Steadicam = Bad Idea
  13. I just picked up some 7ft Canare spaghetti BNC from Emery at Lentequip.....they are much nicer than the Belden cable, which I've been using already...and they seem to fail after short term use, even with proper strain-relief. Fast, reliable service at Lentequip! Cheers!
  14. I just placed an order today thanks to Rob providing the contact info for Mohawk. Leslie Hicks was a pleasure to deal with over the phone.... I'm getting a 7ft Fiber jumper, part number M82719 Her Contact info: 800.422.9961 ext. 5292 leslie.hicks@mohawk-cable.com These cables are apparently not in stock so expect at least a week or two between placing the order and receiving the product. Hope this helps!
  15. Afton, I think you'd do a total 180 if you worked on the show. I shot the Canadian version of DEAL last year and silently cry alone in the dark once in a while because it hasn't come back for more shows. Enjoy Rob!!!
  16. Hey Robert, I was inspired by Jeff Muhlstock's design/photo he posted a while back and used a soft microphone mount ( $5.00) and had my friends at the machine shop mount the ZoeIII. It slips on/off my XCS ergo handle easily, yet also stays well in place while operating. Just recently had the extra bracket made to undersling the Bartech focus remote. With the gimbal handle on your sled.....sounds familiar to me. I also have a Master Series rig and the way I mount the ZoeIII on that was to remove the cone shaped tapered casing located just above the rubber curve on the gimbal handle. When removed, the ZoeIII can be easily attached without modification, and it never failed me while operating.
  17. Hey Job, Please do keep us informed on this one! I would gladly order a modified ZOEIII if/when it's released by Bebob....especially since I've just made a mod that allows me to focus, using Bartech's gimbal mount focus module. Cheers!
  18. Hey Job, A few months ago, a friend rented my backup rig for a live tv gig. I have a newer ZOEIII on that sled, and he described the same problem as you have with the ZOEIII only zooming in upon connection and not being able to zoom out. This was also happening on the Canon lenses, but I'm not sure which ones (they tried more than one), cuz I wasn't on location. They eventually found a lens that worked with the ZOEIII properly. Since then I take that ZOEIII with me on gigs just to plug it into whatever lenses are on set, and I haven't been able to re-create the problem. So, I'd like to know the solution as well! I'm curious Job, how old/new is your ZOEIII? Does it have the little pin hole on the left side of the body for center-tweaking? My old one does, my new one doesn't! http://www.steadicamforum.com/forums/style...fault/blink.gif Cheers!
  19. Hey Erwin, Just curious, what type of service are you having done to your LEH? Is it anything XCS owners should watch out for in its performance? Thanks!! Bryan
  20. Hey Mark....I bet if you discuss that with Walter he'd be open to coming up with a little design addition for your harness....they're awesome in that regard. I had them make a little triax/fiber bracket for me which was installed on the lower left back part of the harness for the "live" work....and it's bliss. Rob.....I didn't forget all the hours of rehearsal before the long concert/show...haha how could I? Even more reason to love the backmount. I used to hate feeling slightly fatigued after days of rehearsal, then in the 14hr of show-day have to be in my prime form for the live 2+hr show. 20.5hrs?....dude that's crazy. I've often thought that with "live" steadicam gigs, operators take much more of a beating compared to film days as it pertains to how much flying time per day is required. Yes, I'm sure some would argue this point, but that's been my personal experience. Kris...good to hear from you bro! Hope all is well with you amigo. The whole "footprint" size of the backmount hasn't been a problem for me in the "live" application...I find I generally have more space to operate compared to a single camera field/ film application. I think I'm coming back to L.A. sometime in November....Beers dude? I should have my new live focus system modified by that time and can show you tha dealio! Respect!
  21. Hey Rob....just curious...all you "live" guys out there, are mostly front mount fitted Pro harness users? How do you feel after shooting a concert 2hrs or longer, straight shooting except for battery changes (if necessary) in the Pro, or any front mount? I've been hearing so much praise about the Pro harness that I'm considering buying one and getting rid of my backup Master Series vest. I'm using the WK backmount full time and couldn't imagine returning to a front mount for all the "live" work. I can operate 7 days/wk in the backmount...becomes like the daily leg/cardio workout which actually feels good. I had pain in the Master vest, but then again I've heard this from many other Master vest owners. I've only swapped to the front mount a few times for really tight spaces....I like having both in my kit....options rock. "My back mounted vest is completely bullet proof and the fit is so precise that I only have room for a wet-dry shit underneath."....James you crack me up Bro!....and kinda gross me out too.
  22. Has anyone ever tried the Marshall V-R70P-HDSDI 7" LCD? Marshall Monitor I haven't but I'm curious.....at under 2G's, it's tempting to have it in the kit. Anyone?
  23. Hey Bryan, How long ago did this sensation begin? It might be this vest isn't the best one for you. Do what you can to demo some other harnesses. Some will just fit your body better than others, and I highly recommend going through the trouble to figure it all out. That could possibly mean, if you don't want to plunk down the money for a different harness right away....going to a chiropractor, or RMT, or whomever you believe will be able to professionaly assess how your current vest impacts your body...and then possibly taking that info and make some mods to your vest and/or how you wear it. The way the harness fits is really important for the long run. If you want to stay with a front-mount harness, try the PRO....from what I understand, fits different than the Tiffen/CP models and some guys swear by them.
  24. Brett, Hey dude!....I ordered mine from the DV Shop in Toronto. The turnaround time was a week. They ship it in from 16X9 in the States . Either way, the Zoe III will come from the USA. Whitehouse might have some in stock too. I didn't have any luck finding anywhere in Canada that had them in stock and ready to ship/pickup. I would recommend getting the canon-to-fuji adapter cable to go with your purchase. You just never know when you'll need that. Hope you're doing well man! Bryan
  25. I'd like to see this arm too! When is the gathering happening?
