  1. Greetings Programs...

I know this had been posted before but I can't find the thread. What causes the Alexa to vibrate on the sled and how to prevent this from happening. I'll be flying one in the next few weeks so I wanted to do my due dilegence before hand.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. This is sort of funny because Janice and I were just talking about the same thing a couple hours ago. Take the class and decide if it's for you I will say this... Make sure it's what you want and if you're going to grow out of it anytime soon and look towards the future and make sure you have everything you need to start off. I myself have a unit that I've grown out of and looking for the next best rig.

  3. MAN,

When I saw it the first time I was besides myself, One was because Heros was back.YES 2nd when I saw you and your rig. After awhile I started noticing the DO. WOW THROUGH BACK!!

You know like I said It just gets frustrating but like I said before Its the nature of the biz

  4. Maybe it's me or just the nature of the biz. When I first started I wasn't known too much but after word got around i was very busy and now its a flatline. Is this me or is it bad all around. I'm so frustrated i've had thoughs of just selling my rig and say TO HELL WITH IT :( but at the same time I've put too much time and money to stop. It's hard. Especially cause i'm in a not so busy market. I'm mean i've traveled but it's nothing like being on a union set.

I mean I watch tv and see these operators on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE,previews for HEROS/VILLANS and the such and it burns me up for that fact that I KNOW I CAN DO THAT its all about location, location, location and knowing people. I'm so sick with it. It seems to me that all my friends are working and I've even put myself as camera op,DP and still I feel like I've been pigeoned holed as just a steadicam op, and i get the comment on the constant OH I didn't know you could shoot or DP?? If i can fly the rig don't you think I know how to shoot?? DUH!!! Is this common,LOL

Anyway I just had to rant and get this off my chest cause it's been KILLIN ME in more ways that one.

    That's all I got.

  5. Hello how is everyone doing.

    OK HERE WE GO!!!

I did a live to tape shoot and the client said that he would pay us after strike and did not. So I spoke to him and he asked to have him invoice him, which was no problem now he says that what I shot was poor and is delaying paying me if at all. Now here is the kicker. The conditions that I had to shoot in was unbearable. I had roughly maybe 2 feet to work with besides a banister out a foot from the stage plus they did not block off where I would be so, I had patrons in there seats having there feet out so I had to watch where I was going plus that banister and they would not let me have my AC to join me cause it was a union house.

So, not only I not having my AC and having union guys who have no idea on what to even when I tried to explain how to "dance" and I forgot to add that is was on triax. Now it sounds as if he will not pay me for my services. I could go on and on about it but I but I am so Irate about it. could spit  . Any suggestions on what i can do. I've never in my career as of yet dealt with this.

  6. I agree with David. I shot for them up in Columbus 3 years ago when Ohio St played Texas. Even though the section that I shot was an insert on there running"speed" coach, I got payment in about 3 weeks, but like everyone has said, each situation is different. That's my 2 cents and I'm sticking to it.

  7. I own this camera and have been very happy with it.

The BNC out with down-convert for you and has no effect on the HD-SDI out. I have an EFP so I fly the camera with an AB brick on the back. The extra five pounds allows the camera to weight enough for my rig without having to add a weight plate or cage. Make sure you turn the optical stabilizer off when you are flying the camera on steadicam or using it on a tripod because it will bring extra movement into the lens. Also the focus and zoom are controlled by servos so a wireless follow focus will not work with the stock lens. I have the P&S Technik mini 35 adapter and I have been very happy with the end result. The mini 35 balances nicely with the AB brick on the camera. Also never trust the EVF for focus, it may look OK in the EVF but it does not have a high enough resolution to show all the details. I have shot some personal projects that looked great in the EVF but when I got home it was soft on my HD screen. USE A FEILD MONITOR. Also you can download various settings for the camera from the internet. The custom presets are stored on the SD card. Finally the Audio sucks on the XLH1 so at least change the mic or better yet record separately. The shock mount for the mic is bigger than a standard shotgun mic so be prepared to adapt whatever mic you use to fit. (Gaff tape works fine).

All in all a great camera and a lot of fun to fly. You can wear it for hours and never feel it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the info. I asked this prior when this cam first came out and I looked it back up to see what i got in response. As LBS I have 2 7lbs plates and with one plus the anton batt I have more than enought to balance and fly with ease. As in the focus ABSOLUTELY. I do not trust the on board to save my life. I'm going wireless vid asst an in the stabilizer, OFF never used it and never will on any cam. It tries to compensate and the frame moves. HATE IT. Thanks though.

    Fly safe

  8. OK RIGHT PLACE!!!

Lets try this again. I'm a Goof!!! :P If you can' laugh at yourself, everyone else will...Like you.

Has anyone shot with the cannon XL H1 and if so does the hd/sd out automatically downconvert to sd or do you need a down converter for it. The reason why I might have a shoot with it coming up. I looked on cannon's site but gave no info about it.

    Thanks.

  10. What's going down PEEPS!!

Question for you all... I'm going to fly a hvx 200 with a redrock micro and If i put the camera upside down with the low mode adapter, that should put the image correctly right??? And what does the redrock weigh in at. i couldnt find the specs on it.

    thanks

  11. An operator is an operator I agree. I have the heart and the will to be a great operator one day. :D Yes i'm apart of a Majority but it's hard to explain why I want to know but it's no big deal just personal. I'm just happy to be apart of this. I LOVE THIS GAME!!!! :D No worries though Its all good. I just feel blessed and thankful that I do what do and love it. Who else besides US can say they love to going to work and truely love there job.

Eric, the pink skin comment is funny.

  12. Who are the Black Operators out there. I know they're few like myself but who are they and where are they and what productions have they worked on and most importantly,to me, pictures. I dont mean to offend anyone but, I'd just like to know. Thanks

  13. Well its coming to the part where I'm getting ready for the next stage of operating and that is going with a bigger rig i.e Masters Series.

Myself personally IM SCARED SHITLESS  . I'm sure this is the same that other ops have went through is the financial side of it. I have an SK2 and I've grown out of it and a majority of shoots I get asked are HD full sized cams or 16mm and every so often a 35 here and there. Im going to get a used rig but its just the idea of 27 to 37k for it is where I go "OH DAMN when i get this i have to get to a workshop(s) and get to work. I love what I do I just need to grow but i dont have the fertilizer yet to do it. I'm I the only one who felt/feel this way or is it just me. BRUTHAS and SISTAS...I would like some guidance. Thanks

  14. Hey Guys! :D

Its been awhile hope all is well with everyone so I'll get down to business.

I've been looking at a used master elite but when I went to do some homework on it I saw a master film? :o

My question is this... What's the difference between the two or is it the same. Thanks. BTW that was one hell of a slashing on sk2 vs flyer blog. MY GOD THAT WAS BRUTAL!!! It was painful to read but it is what it is. WOW!!! So be nice to me PLEASE!! Just let me have my last supper and Fly the rig one more time before I'm executed. :D

    Thanks again

  15. Hey Dave,

I you're looking for machined weights in L.A., try Modern Studio Equipment. I had them make a weight to compensate and match the look of pre-existing gear. Looks really tight. They are located at:

    7428 Bellaire Avenue

    North Hollywood, CA 91605

    P 818-764-8574

Let them know you're looking to have compensation weights made and I believe they'll bring you to Cino (see-no). Good luck

    ONE,

    David

    Dave,

You could do that or go to a metal fabrication house and asked them to make you some dumb lbs and have a diagram of what you want. It cost me about 125 to make the cage. I can use mine for both the dvx or the xl series but what I did was made the cage so it could dettach (2 separate plates). Hope this help you.

Keep flyin and fly safe. And Ellis is the one who told me about it when I need more lbs. THANKS AGAIN DAVID!!!

  16. Greetings Programs!!!!!

Its been ALONG while since I've been on here(cause I've been BUSY!!! Which,is a good thing$$$$$ :D ) But my question is this...

Has anyone flown the XL H1 and does it need a down convertor for the monitor on my rig or does it automatically go from HD to SD. I might have a gig lined up with it. Thanks and you'll be seeing alot more of me and, my reel will be up soon very shortly for suggestions and critique. Till then,

    Straightin Up, and Fly Right!!!

  17. I've been looking into purchasing a used Masters Series. For those own own one or has owned one, what are the advantages and disadvantages in having one. Also thanks to Janice Arthur, for her insight on ALOT of things. Thank you. What I was going to do is buy a new masters vest, either a blue or gold arm, most likely blue and a sled, but i really like some insight on the masters. Thanks.

  18. hey Guys,

i'm a student at the African Film and Drama Acadamy. the aquired a custom/built rig at the begining of the year. i put it on about 4 days ago and it  went ok.  i was wondering if there is any advise that can be given as i'll be operation for one of my seniors in July.  i am having difficulty getting any training material and there is not much training given at varsity either.

i'll try and post a pick so you can see what it looks like.  i was using an ARRI SR2.

any news would be greatly appretiated.

What materials did you use to build it and can it hold it without any strain on you itself? if you go to www.steadi-ops.com, they have downloads on what to and what not to do. Now for you to be operating in July, Unless you have that rig on 24/7, the shots might be good but,it took me a good 4months to really feel out my rig and understood what it was telling me. If it hurts, PUT IT DOWN!!!(not like an animal but you get the gise of it) It's un balanced either with your balancing or your vest as in the length of the vest(that is if it's adjustable) or you mounting spar. Also what all do you have on the SR2. That's a factor also. If the arm isn't build to withstand that much weight, you could really take damage to yourself most importantly, the rig and the camera. That's my 2cents
