  1. When doing live music shows and using a focuspuller/spotter i would like to have intercom contact with him. The tv truck provide these things but mostly in am unhappy with just a porto with headset. I am looking for a system to " hear " my assistent. Can be one way traffic. It needs to be a good sound quality and prefer it can handle loud sounds. Inear or something. Anyone??

    Hi Job,

What ever radio you use find one that will allow you to attach a "Noise cancalling mic." to it. These are what private pilots use when flying to cancell out the ambient back ground noise. This will make it easier for all involved to hear each other.

  2. Just something I ran across with my old 3A, and now on my new rig. Anywhere that you have a steel screw, that screws into aluminum tapped threads, has the problem of failing over time.

My guess is you're dealing with Galvanic Action; the corrosive affect of other metals/alloys in contact with steel. Aluminum is considered a very "active" alloy when in contact with steel; if you're in a damp or salt water environment it compounds the effect.

    Hello Robert,

I would suggest putting some "Anti-Seeze" on steel threads that screw into aluminum. It's availble at auto part stores. Mechanics use it on spark plugs that mount into alloy engine heads.

  3. Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can purchase Kipp handles. I seem to be striking out at the local fastener shops, and I need 2 for some stuff my machinist is making.

    Any leads would be appreciated.

Check the web, there's a buncha sites including Kipp themselves.

  4. Yep, i went that route too in the beginning of my Steadicam career. But I found the slack/lack of precision specially with lenses that need a high torque or have a large barrel (so have a large circumference) too much.

To counter that i made the mark on the handunit moving slightly with the direction of the turning of the handwheel en so compensating for the slight distance in the handwheel where the motor does not move.

That worked well, but had to be adjusted to the type of lens.

a higher resolution system would work better, but at that time only 1024 bits were available, giving 512 steps, theoretically. Nowadays you might find better?

Still i think that this kind of DIY is important for the future career, i encourage it!

    Hello Rob,

There have been improvements to the hobby radios, this one might help those who want to DIY.

Perhaps with the servo modifications for continous rotation and the increased resolution, (see the little video on the above web site) of the Futaba it might do for those not in the high end market.

  6. What's an HDX 900p? I've yet to use it or even hear of it. Is it an HD version of the SDX? And if so, I'm surprised Panavision is carrying them.

Panavision bought out Plus 8 (I think) and are offering the HD Camera's thru them. I don't know if they would do that in LA, since both vendors are still there, but they are offering them in other markets. (Orlando)

As fa as being "panavised", I'm not sure about that. I don't think they have done any modifications to them yet.

    Good morning,

Perchance are you the Chip Monk of Woodstock fame?
