I'll be there just for this 4 days... will spend most time at museums, concerts and plays, but will try to get away for an evening or two... Actually SAVE me!!! Need a reason to skip some of it!!! Would be nice to meet up with some local folk! Let me know! Sincerely, Erwin

  9. Preston! There we go!!! Anybody ever had experiences with them like the one's described above??? I never did and I have been a costumer for over 10 years. Not trying to bash anybody (that's why I am staying mum on the Heden)... Just looking for valuable solutions...
  10. I am aware that we are talking about analog motors used with the BFD. BUT... I read about the digital upgrades from PLC (?) which turn the unit into a digital setup and it got me thinking... Bearing in mind that I am not familiar with the Digital Bartech... What digital motors do work with the unit? Does the Preston motor work. Seeing how the current crop of digital motors are not that much more expensive then the similar analog units... just steer clear of all of them and get a Preston Motor and buy into the, by decades, proven customer service. No headaches any longer... The additional cost would save your wallet, nerves and many grey hair over the years... in the long run... Just a thought...
  11. Matthias, You could make a business out of repairing M-1 units. If the original manufacturer fails to do so.... About 90% of all business in our industry started that way... Just a thought...
  12. The Delrin insert is missing... looks like an early DeRose or could be one of the prototypes that ended up with Whitehouse...
  13. Hey Kyle, That's one of the original PRO Docking Brackets: http://www.gpiprosystems.com/docking-bracket.php They go new for $562.- So you are good on the price!!! Good Luck!
  14. Twitter? What's Twitter? Some Bird watching website??? ;)

  16. Hi Brett, The beauty about our craft is that you basically can pick up a phone and call anyone on the forum or in our little community. I have yet to encounter a person that does not like to talk about there job, experience or gear. Nobody can tell you what you will like or dislike about a certain piece of gear... it will and should be your own decision. After all it's your hard earn cash that you will spend and nothing is more painful then regret... I would do a basic workshop like the week long Arrowhead or the like... After you ran around for an entire week with the steadi on, you will start to develop likings and dislikings to certain pieces of gear or ergonomics, etc. After that workshop and when you really think that that's what you want to do is, talk to operators in your area and see what they have and why. After that start contacting manufacturers and make appointments with them to come by, meet the staff and try flying there equipment. Trust me a roundtrip ticket is cheaper then a full set up that after 6 months you wished you never bought. At that point you will have familiarized yourself with the Tiffen gear then contact the guys at (in no particular order) like GPI, or XCS or Bear Bel, Betz, Sachtler, Klassen FX, etc. at that point you will start to know what you like or dislike. None of them will refuse you if you make an appointment to check it out... some might even send you a loaner out to check it in the field... It's like test driving a car... sometimes you immediately know once you saw it, or sat in it or talked to the sales people if you like it or not... Use the advantage that we are a chatty bunch and talk about gear... preferably off forum as it's less polarized and face to face, or ear to ear, you don't need to use smilies to know if somebody is joking or not. Just my 2 cents... Good Luck, Erwin
  17. I tried the Exo at last years Cinec in Munich. I wore it about 2 hours straight with the heaviest rig I could find at the Tiffen booth. I must say that after the proper fitting by Chris and Garrett it felt, surprisingly and unexpected, very nice and comfortable. There is some getting used to that there is nothing under your arms and that the front rods will start digging into the chest a little, that was remedied with some additional/different padding. I must say that as it stands now it's not a turn key order, put on and operate set up yet. There was a little fiddling going on, which required some parts exchange from Chris. Unless you will receive a variety of different pads, a proper fitting will/would be required. (As with every vest, it would be best to actually work a couple of days with it to know for sure... also to see the next day what and where it hurts, if at all...) But mostly I liked the third arm section set up that attaches to the back of the Vest. Which will be available separately as an upgrade/accessory. As a conclusion: Even though I was impressed and it felt nice, it didn't feel so much different to my PRO Vest as that I would have to rush out to get it. It's amazing that the design of the PRO is still holding up after 12 years. If you are in the market for a new vest, it's for sure worth a consideration and more then a second look. But for now I'll stick with my Vest. Thanks to all at the Tiffen booth for letting me test it thorowly. Just my 2 cents, Erwin
  18. Watch out Erwin Ken will tell you that it's only a fashion statement and of no use.... I guess I am old fashioned then... I like Green-screens, Front mounted Vests, SD Transmitters, and having my freeking 5/32 tugged into my vest... I don't like my pants around my ankles and hate those puffy jackets that are soooo in right now. Also I can always use the wrench to defend my self against lil' rappers that try to pick a fight...
  19. I never leave the house without a 5/32 tugged into my vest. On my PRO Vest it fits nicely between the Chest spar and the chest pad... had it there for years, even though I need it less and less. But then I have always 4 of those buggers strategically placed around the set. The nice thing is that, unlike the 3A, you don't have to unload the PRO Arm to adjust the arm tension. But still I also like to have one of my stands always as close as possible to me. There is no point playing the superman when you can dock it and get the weight of your feet. Also as mentioned before there are all kinds of make do docks around like a Grip or any person foolish enough to be close by and take the rig, table tops, railings, etc... anything will do as long as it gives you time to take the weight off... You could always velcro the 3/16 to your AC's back or onto the Director's handheld monitor... he usually is uncomfortably close to you anyways...
  20. To late David... On a RED shoot a while ago I encountered a DIT that was one of those RED devotees... He was gushing about the RED One and how it was the beginning and the end of all Cameras. Needless to say I gave him a piece of my mind of what I thought of his precious clunker. I ended up named and discussed on the RED forum as apparently I scarred the poor guy shitless... but anyhow... Also a while back I got roped in to help out on a feature shot on two RED One's. They belonged to the DP, as did the lenses and basically everything related to the camera department, of course any useful AKS to make it work with the Steadi was missing. Pretty quickly I could tell that he was solely hired on the bases that he brought all that gear to the shoot and he was very sure of himself that he could never loose that position. It was one of those painful shows including the AC that was pulling focus off of the onboard monitor, complete with her repositioning the same while we were doing takes... it took me a while to figure out why my balance was constantly shifting... And of course the DP wanted to teach me how to composite and execute every shoot as well as teach me how to operate the steadicam... needless to say the couple of days didn't go well. I left the show only to get a call the following week from the producer to ask me to come back... with the explanation and the incentive that the DP has been let go and that they had a better set up rented for me... enough said.
  21. What do you expect? They bought a RED to begin with... rest my case!
  22. I have to get used to that picture... Any particular reason why they went with the 4 pin Hirose for Video/Power instead of the 4 pin Lemo? And hey I can use my XCS power cables!!!
  23. Which one do you want? In no particular order... - Somersault backwards over a headstone with gear because the AD exchanged my spotter and didn't tell me about it... - Seeing a chimpanzee that I just padded a second ago go apeshit and almost rip a wheel off an SUV... - Working with a pissed Longhorn caught in a convenient store isle at 2am... - Getting hit in the back by the rearview mirror of an MTA bus while shooting in the middle of Sunset boulevard during rush hour... - Running around a corner and down some surprise stairs were even the Actor, Director and my spotter went down around me... - Getting hit by a shotgun blank, point blank into the chest during a SWAT raid in a movie by the same stunt coordinator that swore a minute ago nobody would aim at me... - Getting blocked my way back to one by a huge black dude with bullet hole wounds and a Desert Eagle in the front of his pans, telling me that I am walking on his street... - Running down a ravine with a rig loaded with a 435, getting faster and running out of room, very quickly, to stop... - Running into one of Snoop Dogs Bodyguards that does not know that you belong to the crew... - Being pushed in a make believe rickshaw (Ball-buster cart) by a grip that just slipped on cow shit and loses the grip of the cart, pushing me with a trajectory off the curb while preceding a not so calm any more bull in Downtown LA... - Telling a choleric Actor/Director that you would not come back tomorrow, because you didn't like his directing and how he treaded his crew... - Getting extremely hot pans and back shooting the close up of the 2 protagonists while there is a auto bomb going off behind me in Venice... - Standing in a lock off in a very painful and nerve pinching position for 30 plus minutes for an interview (of a well known Director in his living room)... trying to dock... not feeling your legs... there was some damage to the Camera and the Matt box and some bend battery rods on my rig and some dents in the mahogany flooring... and i had a very nice view of the very detailed stacko on the ceiling... - Getting hit by a skater on Venice beach full force while wearing the rig (the PA responsible for crowed control was sleeping) and getting my left hand pinched in the Gimbal joke... my blood made great and very accurate camera marks running down the center post... - Getting talked into flying an unconverted studio mode Panavision G2 off of a make believe quad... just to hear your PRO arm snap during rehearsals... and later your shoulder as you are trying to catch the falling rig... - Running after some actors flying a BL2 with Gyros under a parked Airplane on the tarmac and putting a gash into the kerosene filled wing... - Getting hired for a day call on a movie and realizing that you are the only person actually staying dressed in that soft porn movie... wait, that was more embarrassing... Always ask for the script... I'll stop before I really go there... You get older, but not necessarily smarter with age... but at least (hopefully) more cautious... As always... fly safe... and just say NO! Erwin
  24. That explains why I never had a use for it... ;)
