  1. the Mazda5 has interested me as well. But I am actually trying to slim down my stuff (been inspired by the ops in NY) so for now the 3 will be fine. As far as mpg...I drove to Vegas last summer with the cruise on 85 and got 28 mpg. Better than I expected at that speed...but the car was nearly empty except my fat ass, 2 bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and 2 dozen tubes of Lisagav.

    Hey! you travel light!

  2. Hey mate, how are you doing?

    If you wanna go cheaper than IDX and keep V-mount take a look at SWIT batteries as well, much cheaper and I know of some fellows that are very happy with it.

    Hope to see you soon somewhere

    Cheers

  3. Holy crap. What a total DI#K :angry:

    All my best feelings goes to the Director of Photography, such an angel not to smash an HMI on his head and walk away :ph34r:

    that's what I call cold blood, a real first class gentleman.

    Hope the Di#k is gonna find some less well educated DP on his way soon... ;)

  4. This can be a sticky or not. Regardless, I think it will save most newbies from the embarrassment of not getting a respond or being told off. At least I think so... :rolleyes:

    Hey Charles, totally agreed with all of your points, good idea to make it a sticky, it could help to keep clean the newbies section from redundant questions of people passing by the forum and addressing the usual common questions without even trying to perform a SEARCH before posting and pretending an answer that has been given hundreds of times in the same way before.....

    To Sam, this forum still named "Motion Picture Camera Stabilization System Specialists",

    and I think it doesn't need to be renamed in a while because of "technology going wild", we all know that, but, for the meantime, a 7000 dollars gimbal still works better than a 70 dollars "gimbal", and despite some opinions, this place is still dedicated to discuss the high brands that pros use to own on their respective fields.

    As Charles suggested, some other forums has dedicated sections and those kinds of questions will find better answers, as the majority of fellows here, never flown low budget "steadycams".

    To Matteo: passion is a great thing, is the power to go ahead, but I seriously doubt is enough to show up on set;

    skills make the difference between an Operator and another, and usually in this field skills are gained attending workshops with top rated operator, and in most cases more than once...

    Not to mention the investment in the equipment, which still makes a huge difference on the rates that we are able to give to producers......but don't want to go there and open a big can of worms, it could get really harsh, nothing personal of course!

  5. Hey Jay,

    as any cable, the headphones cable will interfere with the balance and stability of your sled, specially a light one like the Pilot.

    If you do a bit of research on the forum you'll find plenty of informations about how to manage cables and best way to fix it minimizing effects.

    Hope it helps

  6. I second Mike on this, sounds as the easier option so far.

    throw you my 2 cents as well:

    Being the cam in low mod, why not a snorkel lens with extension? keep the set up extremely light on the sled and allows the op to follow the subject once in the pool simply walking along with the swimmer; I think might be wellworth to give it a try.

    let us know

  7. The moderators here have far less power than you might think. They can delete some posts, and do in the case of spam, but other than that, they're relatively hands-off. Are you asking if the discussions are somehow censored to only allow certain types of comments? I know for certain none of that takes place on this forum; perhaps on others. If someone owns and runs a web site, I suppose they have the right to show and not show whatever they want.

    Hi Afton,

    On the whole the moderators here do a great job ensuring spam is kept out and and that posts are placed in the correct sections etc. but I'm afraid there is one that is very heavy handed when it comes to censorship on this site. I have the proof and copies of many emails that he has sent numorous members of this site threatening to ban them permanently for disagreeing with him. I think you need to read the posts on the other forum to fully understand the extent that this person upsets people on various forums thoughout the web.

    Cheers,

    I can only second what Martin says, and it's a shame

  9. I'll do my best to make a long story short;

    This winter I bought a used Mark III Sl Cine camera with some accessories from a fellow op, after considering the option for a new one that at the time was out of budget.

    Anyway, I bought directly from SL Cine the underwater housing for it, two steadimags and two low prifile mags plus few other accessories. To be safe, I decided to send the used body to Hector to give it a full inspection. All was fine........

    After two months on set, the camera showed mechanical problems and then, sadly, died.

    Sent it to SL Cine, of course pissed of :angry: with myself because at the time I didn't get a new body. Here is what happened:

    Hector, taking full responsability of what happened, replaced the body I bought from somebody else with a NEW one for FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (we are talking about 20.000 dollars camera body...)

    How would you call this?

    Honesty, professionalism, probably not enough words to describe it.

    Once again, thanks Hector ;)

  10. Hello everybody!

    I have decided to buy steadicam ( probably a Pilot VL) , I have Sony Z-1 and I will have (hopefully ) Sony EX-3.

    Mostly, I am doing Weddings, some documentaries and I will start soon with some commercials. I have done some search on the internet, but I am not sure which of steadicams is best for work that I described.

    Also, it will be more than helpfull to get some tips about learning how to use rig,

    Regards,

    Rad :rolleyes:

    Hey Radomir, my 2 cent:

    apply for a workshop before to spend your money in something you don't know. Also you could realize that steadicam is not for you. After the workshop you'll have the basic knowledge to decide what will fit your needs and how to use it and practise with it. That's the way we all started, think about

    good luck

  11. Hi Peter,

    nice walk and talk, I see your T-shirt at a certain point, I suggest tight wear so it won't fly around, especially in DJ. A part that it sounds good. Also let your gimble hand much more free and a long drop time (4/5 sec), I tried that and my horizon has incredibly improved.

    Stay hooked.

    regards,

    matteo

    :ph34r: 4/5 seconds for a walk and talk? This is kind of a weird set up.... What's your drop time for a shot that involves many tilts? Theory: (correct me if I'm wrong): the fastest the drop time is, more stable the sled is, so for a simple walk and talk with no tilting involved the best drop time should be very fast, specially for a novice that still have to "fight" many other factors. Hope it make sense

    Yes a bottom heavy rig will give you a more stable sled but the sled will pendulum more when you start and stop.

    Very obvious. There are proper techniques to control the sled at start and stop, those are one of the first things you'll learn in a workshop.
