  4. Hi all, I'm starting a job that's using Panavision XL's. I'm told that Panvision has its own plate for mounting the XL to any steadicam. I've got a Chroszeil top stage. Is there a specific mounting plate that I'd need to mount it to my Chroszeil? I already have the power cable for the XL, is there anything else I should get prepped for? Thanks, Layton.

  5. Hmmm...

Anybody out there using one of these ACME gimbals yet? Opinions?

Brett "shopping for new gimbal" Manyluk

:) :) Hey Brett, I just replaced my MKV Evolution gimbal for a brand new V2 MKV gimbal. It's brilliant and flawless. Never had anything so stable with anything on the arm (a 3A by the way). Highly recommened. P.S., have never had anything but MKV, so can't speak for the others. Cheers, Layton.

  6. Yo BJ, how's it goin' eh! Thirty years old...I've got spit in my mouth older than that! Enjoy it bro' before ya know it the hair on your head disappears and resurfaces in your ears! Go figure. Hey, cheers and a happy birthday. Layton.

  7. Hi;

I came up with this idea a decade ago and I've toyed with it for years.  I've finally gotten someone to make a good one.

File this under "food for thought"  How about a clamp under the gimbal (where your hand would be) and a little arm that reaches up at an angle to a short post that now lets you operate without reaching and without having to operate above the gimbal.

The advantage is is that you now have a lever and you get much more strength out of all those hard to press into action hand motions that Lo-mode always seems to make harder.

The disadvantage is is that you have to be nicer to it or you get too much control.

Also you have to swish pan with your whole body but I think the handle has some validity in all other situations.

When I get the photos I'll add some but now its a real thing.

:) Hey Janice, sounds great...anything to make low mode more manageable! I look forward to your advancement. Cheers, Layton.

  8. :) Hey Cameron, I started with an MK-V/3a from Howard and it was the perfect starter rig for me. I've now gone on to an MK-V Evolution and have had great success with it. Howard and his staff are always just a call or email away and the service has always been top-notch! I couldn't recommend them or the gear any higher. Directors, DOP's and especially first assistants love the rig for its simplicity and flexibility, I love it because it's flown everything I've thrown at it...plus it looks great. Lemme know if you've got any other questions. Cheers, Layton Burton

  9. Thankyou for your reply , more and more i thinkthis is the way to go
    Hi Cameron,

As Howard originally mentioned i had a 3A sled rebuilt by him several years ago - i think there might still be a picture of it on his website somewhere.

I started off with a standard 3A sled. Howard replaced the jbox with a mkv jbox, gave me a pro post with up the post cabling, gave me a no tools mod for the gimbal, added a 12/24 volt convertor, cleaned up/serviced the monitor/electronics and gimbal and rebulit my vest. It was a great sled and very cost effective. A year or two later i then upgraded the sled even further to a mk-v evolution base system. lcd monitor, pagmounts and mk-v dbox. essentially keeping only the original gimbal and topstage.

MK-V offer a lot of great upgrades for 3A owners and if you're seriously considering modifying your 3A sled id highly recommend them.

    hope this helps,

    :)

  10. Yeah, I've used theirs too. The Lithium Battery belts fail incredibly fast- you have to have spare belts hidden around the place in case you start to run low during a live event.  How long ago did you use their stuff? Perhaps they've solved some of those issues?

This was last September (2004). I think the camera had the smaller IDX V-Lock Batteries. But we only had 4 batteries for 2 cameras, so I had to share with the handheld. And we were in the Bahamas, so no chance of getting more. It would have killed my sled batteries too quickly to just use 1 battery for both.

Great Tech, though. No Camera problems, except when I got too far away from the recievers, which was quite a distance.

:) Hey thanks all, I'll check into all of your suggestions! I love the forum. Peter, not only did your tally light work flawlessly on the awards show I steadied but even the talent on stage loved it because it was so bright they knew exactly when to play to the steadicam cam! Thanks loads! I'll recommend it highly to anyone! Brent, the CBC is sending out a pitch and catch system for the Queen's visit the middle of next month, but I'll give your guy a call to get some answers. Thanks again all, a pleasure hearing from all of you. Cheers, Layton.
