How do they Snap Zoom while operating???
Lawrence Karman replied to Kevin Andrews SOC's topic in Operating
Check out the opening shot of "Serenity". Lots of hand zooms while on Steadicam. Whole shot ( 2 actually, digitally married) extremely well done by Mark Moore. -
Archos 504 Problem
Lawrence Karman replied to Justin Browne's topic in Video Assist and Video Accessories
Had a PV Liteweight up the other day and my Archos (400) couldn't find a video signal. Turned out the tap was black & white and I forgot to change the setting in the Archos menu to B&W. Did that and it worke fine. The auto setting will not recognize it. Try scrolling through your settings. -

That is really tragic. My heart goes out to their kids, whose pictures I was told decorated his Steadicam monitor. -
Mixing Hytrons & Dionics Battery Chemistries
Lawrence Karman replied to David Shawl SOC's topic in Batteries/Power
NO You cannot mix chemistries. Well you can if you have an XCS sled, but no other sled allows you to do it I just ran a Sony 900 off one Dionic and one Proformer in parallel for much of the day with no problems. Why can't you mix, Eric? -

For some reason I always thought the PRO 2 battery rack used only one battery for 12v, marked Camera, and the other was dedicated to the Accessory plug (and 24v focus power). At least that is what those different battery jumpers that you plug in the front indicate. That is why I chose to get the Y cable. Can anyone confirm this? -

Chaz, I read your previous post and got why you flew with all the hardware. With all the newbie "DP's" shooting with the RED I would just hate to see them come to think the norm is to fly that or any camera in full studio mode. Obviously you do what you want or need to do at the time. As far as speed goes, if you leave the ff/matte box, rods and dovetail together it's 3 screws to switch over. Short of a magic hour sequence, there's always time for that. -

Wonder If Panavision plans to make a PV dovetail adapter like the did for the Arri 3's so we might be able to use a plate like the XL has and would interface with all their other dovetails? Look, it's a light camera, but so is an Arricam LT and we are never asked to fly the baseplate, dovetail, and studio matte box (OK, once in a blue moon to fly the dreaded "Ring Light"). Suddenly it becomes necessary to quickly flip back to studio mode when using the Red? And as you pointed out the whole shoot was on the rig anyway. -

curious to know why you chose to fly with the base plate, dovetail, and rods? I am assuming because they did not have a clip on matte box? (Do we really have to ask for everything?) -

RED Drive and Gyros

I've seen that mount and the rubber is fairly stiff. Don't think it would effect the rig at all. -
RED Drive and Gyros
Lawrence Karman replied to Michael Tsimperopoulos SOC's topic in Cameras (Film/Video/HD)
Saw this on the Red user net: "At Pictorvision we have RED #970 as one of our in-house camera payloads for our Wescam gimbals and our new Eclipse stabilized aerial gimbal. The Wescam is a mass gyro system (inertia from three 2.5 lb 25,000 RPM brass weights stabilize the camera) and the Eclipse is actively stabilized by a high bandwidth servo loop. While both systems create visually stable images their camera payloads are subjected to considerable high frequency vibrations. We have tried using the RED RAID to get longer runtimes so the helicopter doesn?t have to land every 4½ minutes but even during bench testing, consistently suffer dropped frames on both types of gimbals. We recently tested Element Technica's isolated drive mount on both the Eclipse and the Wescam and were unable to make either configurations drop a single frame. Regardless of what we subjected either gimbal to, the ET drive mount kept the RED RAID humming along. We even de-tuned the Eclipse to the point that it was resonating violently and still no dropped frames." http://www.steadicamforum.com/forums/style...e_types/gif.gif -
Glad to hear you've got it figured it out.

Have you tried powering it independent of the rig and sending it video both independent of the rig and through the rig? Perhaps your rig is not sending enough voltage or a weak video signal?

RED Drive and Gyros

What build (software version) was the Red running? 15 or 16? 16 is still Beta but some folks are already using it commercially and there are problems shooting 16x9 4k. -
Actionproducts 360xtreme high low cage
Lawrence Karman replied to Jon Beattie's topic in Steadicam Marketplace - For Sale
That must be one mo-fo to operate if their "demo" film is any indication. I mean if a company is trying to show the best possible example of their product in action and that's what they are showing? Just want to be honest and not trying to be insulting here and I hope you didn't shoot it, but look at the headroom. It's all over the place! -
Saw this monitor at Cinegear. One thing I did not like was the inability to reposition the electronic bubble level in the picture. It lives under the frame. I'm used to putting mine (XCS) touching the top frame line. I tend to watch headroom a lot and I see the bubble more there. That's just my personal taste, though. Perhaps a software change in the future will allow you to repo.We tried to turn the monitor upside down at Cinegear but we couldn't outwit the level; it flipped with the picture too. I also found the built in frame lines a bit faint. The picture was bright, on the plus side.

Camera / Steadicam Op Injured In Road Rage Incident
Lawrence Karman replied to Robert Starling SOC's topic in Off Topic
My friend, also a camera operator, rides in that group and told me about it today. Said the police wouldn't charge the doctor, a surgeon. Said there are a bunch of lawyers in the riding club and they are trying to publicize it to force the DA's hand to prosecute the asshole. He has a history of going after cyclists. Psycho. -
Check out the XCS camera plate. It is about 20mm tall, which I keep in my AKS for times when I need a little extra clearance. (Like low mode with a 435. A pesky bolt head on the camera's low mode plate hits my top stage) BTW, I'm not familiar with the 3A, but was it not possible to reverse the top stage or reverse the rig 180 and spin your monitor around to the other side to allow you to mount the camera and access to the side to side adjustment knob?

Has anyone used BatteryRefill.com
Lawrence Karman replied to David Shawl SOC's topic in Batteries/Power
Give Paul or someone in tech support at AB the serial number and they can tell you if you need a chip upgrade. Think the software revision needed is: 4.7 If you do need an upgrade the chip was around $45. -

Buy some Dionics. I went the Hytron recell route via Rathbone once and will never waste my money again. -
Sounds like a really bad day, Imran. Chalk it up to experience and new lessons learned. And thanks for sharing.
