  1. What else would be needed in order to wire those bayonet mounting assemblies onto a custom rig? Do you have the pins for that side?
  2. I am a big fan of my carhartt insulated coveralls: http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32198 When doing steadicam I usually wear them under the vest then if its cold enough a jacket can go on over the vest or just on between takes. They are easy to take on and off and covering that gap between jacket and pants makes a big difference in warmth.
  3. The heavy duty stabilicers kick ass on ice. I did a shoot on an ice skating rink and I was able to do running shots on the ice without ever slipping or feeling unsafe.
  4. While I agree the extended warranty sounds like BS their reputation for service and standing by their product so far has been really good. When they found a defect in early units that very few people would ever notice but could impact range and performance they offered a free fix for existing units. Sadly there are a lot of companies out there that would not have done that. They have also provided new features through free firmware updates instead of just saving them for new models. They seem like a standup company to me. They are owned by vitec group which owns other companies people trust such as Anton Bauer but being part of a big company I wouldn't be surprised if this is more of a corporate thing from up top in order to make some extra money. ~Jess
  5. Having SDI and power grounds tied together in and of itself shouldn't be a problem and should actually be the proper way of doing things. I would guess that if the BNC connector on the monitor actually had a better ground connection this would not happen as the path of least resistance would no longer be through the part of the SDI board that is frying. If you plug the 4 pin XLR in last this shouldnt happen. It is designed so that the ground pin always mates before the hot. Wish all connectors were like that. ~Jess
  6. They are bigger and heavier with basically the same wattage and amperage rating and cost a couple dollars more. Don't see any point in this "upgrade." By the next generation I am hoping cell technology will have improved a little. If you do decide to upgrade ill take those HC cases off your hands for you :-)
  7. Your welcome to keep your gear in my garage. Im in Culver City about 15 minutes from LAX. ~Jess
  8. Let me know if your sale falls through. I am in the process of getting a new one but wouldn't mind going used.... ~Jess
  9. What he said. Unless I have a lot of crazy other stuff they make it weigh about what I want it to. The Arri dovetail is also a reasonable solution for quick switches between steadicam and sticks. I find the quicker I can switch between the two the less I am asked to do steadi-sticks ~Jess
  10. I am more interested on electrifying my stand to keep well meaning people from moving the stand while I have the rig up.
  11. It is important to instruct them on how to move it(one leg forward, sled towards your body) and set some limits. Even if your taking the sled off when moving it still seems loads easier to me to move the stand with wheels. The big wheels are definitely not for tight locations though. I mainly use the smaller wheels to widen the base and add a little height to my single riser stand. The small wheels are a rougher ride for the sled than the big ones but the big ones do give people ideas of taking the sled places they probably shouldn't.
  12. The backstage wheels are really the ones to get: http://www.backstageweb.com/New%20Products.htm They make rolling over cables, etc easy. They also give you a super wide heavy base. Not for every situation though, I actually have a single riser stand with the hard wheels and a double riser with the pneumatics and I use them both all the time. If going without wheels definitely get the wider base and the two rise. Otherwise it will often seem a little short and you will need a sandbag more often.
  13. Will it even be possible to buy individual components or do you have to buy the whole sled? Modularity and compatibility doesn't matter all that much if you can't because it is still a closed system.
  14. IMHO this blackmagic is the way to go: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/857473-REG/Blackmagic_Design_CONVBATT_HS_HDMI_to_SDI_Battery.html ~Jess
  15. On a feature near Salt Lake City, Utah and just had an arm spring snap. Anyone have an arm or full rig available in Utah? Thanks, Jess Haas, SOC
  16. The London airport is actually the one place I could never get them to hand check film. It has been a while but I wouldn't bet on it there. ~Jess
  17. For Steadicam it is nice and daylight viewable. Whites tend to clip a little early making it not so great for judging exposure. I was having some issues with image delay recently that may have been purely from the epic but I was kind of getting the feeling there may have been a little bit of delay in the monitor as well, I need to test this. In general I have been really happy with it. Haven't had the chance to try the level. ~Jess
  18. The key is a schottky diode rated for enough amps(your looking for upward of 10) with a low voltage drop. I used http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/STMicroelectronics/STPS60L30CW/?qs=%2fha2pyFadujZxjIWIY2dLgpJjceBTCJptGlBs2%2ftjJH8LDu%252bgt5GzA%3d%3d which is completely overspeced (2 30amp diodes in a package) but has a very low voltage drop. Keep in mind that if you put a meter on a schottky diode you may still read a voltage going the wrong direction. This is the tradeoff for a low voltage drop, but its only enough of a leak to confuse you not to have your batteries charge each other. ~Jess
  19. This question has been asked a few times but as you said most people don't want to spend the money to do it right. This is one thing a search might find you: http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=20082 ~Jess
  20. If your making the guns from Aliens and money is no object you may even be able to find actual parts used in the movie on here. do a search.
  21. I have recently been doing some upgrades to my machine shop and just wanted to say that I am available if anyone needs any work done. No job is too small so if you just need a couple of holes drilled or tapped, small brackets made or things repaired or rewired or whatever then hit me up. I am conveniently located near the intersection of the 10 and the 405 (East of the 405 for those east side snobs who don't want to go any further west than that :-) If anyone wants to swing by and check out the shop and shoot the shit and have a drink I am up for that too. ~Jess Haas, SOC 512-796-9318
  22. Love it. Unfortunately when doing such things in a city building codes, permits, etc start making it a lot more complicated. ~Jess
  23. I just use my business card. Some agents dont know about it so I carry a printout of their policy from their website. If you have any trouble just ask to speak with a supervisor.
