  1. Things are getting too serious in this Off Topic thread. Alan, that build sucks. Put the Crossbow on the back of the monitor with some velcro. Nobody assumed the Crossbow would refuse to power on if connected to a Gen 2 Cinepreordertron. However, the monitor is needlessly wide and looks sloppy. The next best thing to a well balanced, tight rig is a rig that LOOKS tight and clean. Eric: new day/gig, new camera, new build. Sometimes, I fly 1 battery. Sometimes, I fly 2. Sometimes, even 3. Someday, I'll get my rig marked off for how to set up everywhere for each battery configuration. However, dayplaying new gigs all the time means we can't pre-set for everything. If there's time, I'll use your 90 degree test to find db and then set the camera. If not, you build and get to work. Everyone else:
  2. I miss when Eric was a moderator. THERE I SAID IT.
  3. That monitor has a 1/4-20 screw hole and DAMNIT WE'RE GONNA USE IT.
  4. For me, it's like the situation with Lil' Wayne when he tried to go off on David Svenson: I'm sure the operator is doing everything that's appropriate right now, and something tells me the right people are pissed off that it happened. I'll be happy to hear the resolution, but I'll withhold my outrage until I see what happens. What the footballer did was egregious, but what's done is done, and hopefully the operator, his employer, his coworkers and everyone on "his side" are acting fast to deal with it and re-establish the good faith of that job as a safe work environment.
  5. Interesting method for trying to retain customers, Mike :-D I wish I could join you guys, but I don't believe this endeavor will get any farther than the bar or tailgate pregame, and I can get drunk in a parking lot here in LA.
  6. Your life won't be complete until I see you and Dan Kanes going head to head with Mike Skipp and Chris Bangma... IN THE TRAMPOLINE THUNDERDOME. 4 MEN ENTER, 4 DRUNK MEN LEAVE.
  7. .... No, I would never do that... No, in all seriousness, won't do that. If you need/want the webspace, just ask.
  8. Alright, that's it... Steadicam community dodgeball competition. Time to get all this hostility out in the air by flinging our balls at each other's heads. ... you heard me.
  9. Summary Do you want free webspace? Email or message or call me. Preface Earlier today, I was looking for examples of Steadicam operator resumes, since I'm trying to update mine and wanted to ruthlessly steal how all of yours look. Well, attempted to view at least 3 operators' websites that I know previously HAD websites... but don't anymore. Just so you all know, iCloud does NOT offer webspace anymore, and MobileMe/DotMac are both shut down. If you used iWeb to design a website and were hosting it through Apple, you should go check it out... because it's probably not there anymore. "Well, crap, now what do I do?" You can go set up a website and webhosting somewhere else, or how about I give you some bandwidth on my hosting account, and you just host your site thru me? I have an account with a webhosting company called "DreamHost", whom I've held an account with probably since 2005? Anyway, long story short, I have unlimited webspace and unlimited bandwidth. I don't really make use of all that space, and I figure the storage/bandwidth needs of this community are hardly large enough to warrant everyone spending $100+ per year for hosting. "Can I use iWeb?" I should be able to set up your site to accept any web site editor you like, including iWeb. Wherever you have your domain hosted (GoDaddy, etc), I'll give you the information to point it to my account on DreamHost. I'll set it up so you're hosted, you have a username and password, and you can access it anytime you want. Do you have another WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get?") program like Rapidweaver, Adobe Dreamweaver, etc? Should be able to work all the same, since they mostly use FTP to access and manage/publish the content. "I don't know stupid computers, I know Steadicam damnit! I miss Geocities, can't I just use a web-based content editor?" Yes, you can. If that's what you prefer, I can set you up with a small variety of HTML based web design programs like concrete5, GetSimple CMS, etc. I'm going to investigate WordPress, but I know they have had issues recently, and I don't want to deal with potential problems. "How do you have such a sweet deal? Why are you doing this?" I pay about $120 per year for my webhosting, and for that price I get insane storage and bandwidth. I'm doing this because Steadicam people are cool, and since I've made such extensive use of the SteadicamForum over the years, it seems right to try and return the help of the community. I can't tutor people, I can't fix cars, but I am fairly good with computers. "Are you going to put ads or pop-ups on my website?" No. I won't make any money or revenue from your site being hosted on my account. No Google AdSense or AdWords, no ENLARGE YOUR ARM pop-ups, nothing. "Holy crap, internet Steadicam guy, this is very generous! I'd like to make a donation to help you!" OK, if you feel strongly about it, I'll probably accept donations at some point. Anything above the cost of the account, and I'll probably donate to the SOC's charity. "Will you design a website for me?" That was a past life, but if you want, we can probably talk about that stuff. More than likely, I'll want to show you how easy it is to set up your own website and manage it without paying exorbitant fees. For us, our website is really just a fancy business card: advertises you, shows what you've done, hosts a demo reel, lists your gear, and shows how to get in touch with you. If you want a major website, I have friends who still do web design and can hook you up with them. "What happens if my site goes down?" Well, if you didn't notice that your website was currently down now, you probably won't notice next time either... but if your site goes down, it's probably because my site went down, and that's probably because DreamHost suffered a major problem (I haven't see it happen yet), or Judgment Day happened. Either way, I'll probably be aware of it before you, and I'll do my best to get it handled. "Where do I sign up?" I'll handle the requests in the order I receive them. Feel free to PM me here, or email me privately: will å† wbd3 ∂o† com. "Will you help me host BitTorrent files?" No. N. O. Please note: I will subject you to the same terms and conditions as what I agree to with DreamHost, which means no sharing MP3's or complete movies or any of that garbage. If I noticed abnormal spikes in data usage, I will suspend your site until we determine what's going on. To protect the integrity of the site, I'll probably enforce file size limits (no 1GB files, etc).
  10. Whatever it is, I'm sure Cinetronic has an upgrade I can preorder. :D
  11. About a year ago, I bought a Backstage TR-04JR cart directly from Backstage, and I've been very happy with it so far. Background: I wanted a shorter length cart to accommodate my apartment's narrow hallways, but still rugged enough to work on set. Plus, it still collapses and goes compact if you need to ship it. Cost: $1,280 (When I bought it) Spanner bar with baby pin: $120? Vest hanger: $105 The cart is 36" long, so it isn't as short as the shortest Inovativ carts, but I really don't think you'd want a 30" cart (topheavy, space issues, etc). When on set, I have 3 Pelican boxes I work out of: a Pelican 1560 (slop box), Pelican 1600 (batteries and charger), and Pelican 0450 (toolbox with most of my kit organized). Everything fits pretty nicely, and I find it's the right mixture of extra space for additional boxes (for when bringing a Preston, etc) but also not so much space that I start carrying additional camera boxes.
  12. I just heard the same thing. Good to hear!

  14. I'm wondering if anyone in LA has an up-down-cross converter that I might borrow to experiment with this week. I'd need it probably tomorrow thru Friday, happy to come pick up and drop off to you. So if you own an: Decimator MD-DUCC AJA UDC BlackMagic UpDownCross Mini Converter Please let me know? PM me here or email me: will a† wbd3 ∂o† com Note: I don't need a down converter like a Decimator 1 or Decimator 2. Something specifically for SDI format cross conversion. Thanks!
  15. I'm not sure glitter is what you take home with you when you hug the some of the girls at Jumbos.
  16. That's great to hear, Jens! Everyone who ordered one, please feel free to chime in with when you receive it and your experiences with it so far? I'll keep it updated in the main post. EDIT: Hmm, I guess I cannot keep the main post updated through editing as I'd hoped.
  17. Just as a quick update, another operator confirmed this morning that 1920x1080@23.98PsF was undetected by the Gen 2. A Transvideo monitor on set confirmed the image was working with other display panels, but not the Gen 2. This was with a Sony F5 set to 23.98PsF (which is the only option with the Sony F5 apparently). The Alexa has the option to set the MON Out output to P or PsF, but the Sony F5 doesn't seem to have that functionality. So as of yet, no firmware updates have addressed the PsF undetected issue. Cinetronic claims that 1920x1080@23.98PsF should be detected, as it's a "valid" SMPTE format, but an operator had a different experience this morning. We should organize a camera test and format test to verify which formats and cameras the monitor will work with. Perhaps a visit to Clairmont?
  18. Seriously. Stop. Everyone. Don't feed the trolls.
  19. I actually just had Andrew Ansnick make me a couple earlier this year. Ordered a couple DIN 1.0/2.3 to BNC male pigtails (I think each one is 12 or 18 inches?), use them for recording off my sled. Otherwise, I haven't found a simple adapter yet, and B&H sells them for $30 to the RED community that still uses a RED One/MX. So, a custom build seemed better for price, versatility and price.
